Canonisée par l’Église orthodoxe russe (Patriarcat de Moscou) en 2006 en tant que nouvelle martyre de la foi, sainte Maria de Gatchina est exemplaire de la dissociation de deux dimensions de la sainteté dans la Russie contemporaine. La première dimension, politico-mémorielle, est incarnée par les nouveaux martyrs de la foi ; elle met en avant la force de la foi chrétienne face à la violence politique. Elle n’intéresse qu’une très petite minorité de croyants. La seconde, plébiscitée par l’immense majorité des fidèles, est thérapeutique et charitable ; elle concerne la capacité de sainte Maria à apporter aide, solutions et consolation dans le quotidien. Fondé sur une enquête ethnographique et documentaire sur le culte de sainte Maria de Gatchina, l’article analyse les luttes intra-orthodoxes, tout en soulignant l’attractivité des usages thérapeutiques et charitables. Il interroge l’existence d’un récit contemporain unifié sur les nouveaux martyrs de la foi, y compris parmi les croyants qui se placent sous l’autorité du Patriarcat de Moscou.
Canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) in 2006 as a new martyr saint, Saint Maria of Gatchina is exemplary of the dissociation of two dimensions of holiness in contemporary Russia. The first dimension, political and memorial, is embodied by the new martyrs. It highlights the strength of the Christian faith in the face of political violence. It is of interest to only a very small minority of believers. The second one, acclaimed by the vast majority of the faithful, is therapeutic and charitable. It is related to Saint Maria’s ability to bring help, solutions and consolation in daily life. Based on an ethnographic and documentary study of the cult of Saint Maria of Gatchina, the article analyses intra-Orthodox struggles while emphasising the attractiveness of therapeutic and charitable uses. It questions the existence of a unified contemporary narrative about the new martyrs of the faith, including believers who place themselves under the authority of the Patriarchate of Moscow.
Канонизированная Русской Православной Церковью (Московским Патриархатом) в 2006 году как новомученица, святая Мария Гатчинская является образцом размежевания двух измерений святости в современной России. Первое измерение, политическое и мемориальное, олицетворяют новомученики. Это подчеркивает силу христианской веры перед лицом политического насилия. Это измерение представляет интерес лишь для очень небольшого меньшинства верующих. Второе, признанное большинством верующих, является целительным и благотворительным. Речь идет о способности святой Марии помогать, находить решения и давать утешения верующим в повседневной жизни. На основе этнографического и документального исследования культа преподобной Марии Гатчинской в статье анализируется внутриправославная борьба, подчеркивается привлекательность целительного и благотворительного служения святой. Статья ставит под сомнение существование единого современного нарратива о новомучениках, в том числе среди верующих, находящихся в юрисдикции Московского Патриархата.
