At the end of the 19th century, but especially at the end of the 20th, with the appearance of “new history”, the optimistic view of the idea of progress was questioned. One of the essential aspects of the dialogue between Nikolai Fëdorov and Vladimir Soloviov for many years was based, apparently, on how to design our relationship to the past, to the missing generations. They agreed to design the relationship to the dead in an ethical perspective (which joined a negative attitude toward progress and led to refusing to see the death of others as the inescapable condition of the prosperity of future generations), but they differed on an essential point: the Fëdorovian ideal of resuscitation of the dead cannot be achieved, according to Solovyov, in a dimension that is not that of earthly reality. Their common starting point was a bad relationship to nature that Solovyov had denounced in his lecture “On the decline of the medieval view of the world”. This “offence against nature” was the cause of the agricultural calamities that threaten humanity. An example was the great famine of 1891 that so impacted people’s way of thinking. But while for Solovyov, realization of the ideal principle in the material sphere means the end of the whole historical process, for Fëdorov, who refuses the idea of transcendence, perfection, the new immortal state, will not mean a shift out of time, for this can be done only on this earth. "Resuscitation" must be the natural extension of the historical process.
