After the 1830 Uprising and the Russification of the Polish population, it became essential to create spaces to preserve Polish intellectual achievements. The uprises exiled in France set up several literary and scientific institutions in Paris. Officially founded in 1842, the Batignolles Polish Library established itself as the main opposition institution to the Paris Polish Library, then under the direction of Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, the leader of the conservative factions of the Polish Great Emigration. In the 1840s, the Batignolles Polish Library was only a modest school library near the Polish school in Paris. But from the 1850s onwards, its collection expanded to include significant contributions by activists, writers, politicians and political groups. This article examines the multiple functions fulfilled by the Batignolles Library and compares them to those of the Paris Polish Library, in order to highlight the evolution of its spheres of influence over thirty years and its impact on both national culture and the Polish emigration in France.
