The forms of the imperative in Russian can be used in a narrative text in which they denote a process located in the temporal past; this use is called ‘historical imperative’ or ‘narrative imperative’. Linguists are not unanimous regarding their origin: the best known theory is that the narrative imperative must come from the old Russian aorist, and it has long been accepted as a reference, but this theory is widely criticized at the moment (and rightly so in my opinion). D. Paillard recently published an article about a unitary characterization of the different uses of the imperative whose general theoretical scheme I take up.
My approach is based on the following principles : a) synchronic (the examined verbal system is the contemporary Russian one and the narrative use is considered as one of the values of the imperative mood in Russian); b) from the previous point follows the principle of an invariant of the imperative (research should be done to try and define a general semantic meaning of this verbal mode: this invariable meaning would allow to account for the particular values of the imperative with all their specificities); c) textual (I believe that the context plays a crucial part in the correct interpretation of the narrative imperative and in the understanding of its operation in the text where it is part of a narrative system).
The invariant of the imperative, illustrated in the simplest way and most directly accessible by the prototypic value – the injunction, definitely occurs in the narrative value. This is a metaphorical use of the injunction.
