Reflecting on the semiotics of various phenomena of life and culture, Yuri Lotman and Kalevi Kull discuss the possibility of drawing parallels between languages, biological species and nations. They reflect on life considered as a semiotic process of informational self-reproduction; on the notions of progress, adaptation, chance and the unpredictable, on semiosis and Umwelt. Some statements in the conversation concern the history of science and the methodology of scientific work in general. Рассуждая о семиотике разнообразных явлений культуры и жизненных феноменов, Ю.М. Лотман и К. Кулль обсуждают возможности проведения аналогий между языками, видами и нациями, размышляют о жизни как о семиотическом процессе информационного самовоссоздания, о понятиях прогресса, адаптации, случайного и непредсказуемого, семиозиса и умвельта. Pour les représentants de l’École de Moscou-Tartu, la sémiotique était, plutôt qu’un domaine particulier du savoir avec son axiomatique et sa méthodologie, une clé qui déterminait leur approche des phénomènes les plus divers de la culture humaine et qui permettait de voir des ressemblances entre eux. The article emphasizes several features of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school, in particular: the desire of its protagonists to use exact methods in their work and to dispose of the subjectivism which usually characterises humanities; their interest in the semiotics of culture and the renunciation of any ideologically marked evaluations; their lack of interest in semiotics considered as an autonomous branch. For the representatives of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school, semiotics was not a field of knowledge with its own axiomatics and methodology, but rather a key determining their approach to the study of most various phenomena of human culture and allowing to find similarities between them. В статье выделяется ряд особенностей, харатеризующих Московско-тартускую семиотическую школу, а именно: стремление ее протагонистов к использованию в своих исследованиях точных методов; их желание избавиться от присущего гуманитарным наукам субъективизма; интерес к семиотике культуры; отказ от идеологических оценок любого рода, а также отсутствие интереса к семиотике «как таковой».
