Analysing “military” metaphors in the works of Lotman written during the last years of his life and, in particular, his opposition between the “rear” and the “front line”, the author of this article moves on to the question about the development of structural and semiotic studies. Without likening the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school to its most renowned representative, the author does not separate them either, unlike modern critics who consider the post-structuralist “finesse” [čutkost’] of Lotman in his last years as an overcoming of structuralist dogmatism of this school. Avoiding simplistic judgments, the author shows Lotman’s work developed new (even though Lotman attributed them to the Moscow-Tartu school) problems such as multilingualism, cultural dynamics, openness of semiosis in space and time. According to the author, the most interesting and important (from a philosophical point of view) conceptual step consists in Lotman’s interpretation of the problem of translation, and that of incomprehension and untranslatability: rather than as obstacles for cognition, he considered them as sources of new cultural meanings.

Bakhtin’s book in the context of French and German methodological arguments of the 1910-1920s » Irina Popova studies the long prehistory of the book – starting from the stage of conception and creation of the dissertation – on Rabelais at the end of the 1930s. Popova singles Bakhtin’s book out of the context of the methodological disputes of the 1960s-1970s to put it back into its original context : French and German philology during the first third of the 20th century. Bakhtin’s interest in the works of Karl Vossler’s school and especially in those of Leo Spitzer’s dealing with the issue of the « Other’s word » began in the 1920s. And Bakhtin’s work on the sociology of language written together with Valentin Voloshinov testifies to the fact that the switch from studying the dialogical issue of Dostoyevsky’s novels to interpretations of Rabelais was determined by Bakhtin’s development.
