This study provides a brief description and an attempt at a political history of the Schnitzler collections held in Strasbourg libraries. These collections comprise of the book collection (held at the André Malraux City Library) and personal papers (held at the bnu) of Strasbourg-based historian Jean-Henri Schnitzler. They trace the fascinating story of this Alsatian historian's passion for the Russian Empire under the July Monarchy and the Second French Empire. Taking up Charles Corbet's hypothesis that Schnitzler was an agent of influence of the Tsarist government, the article supports this theory through an analysis of the historian's correspondence and integrates the history of the constitution of his book collection into that of his political engagement. In conclusion, the author notes the invisibility, which stroke the works on Poland in descriptions of Schnitzler's collection and questions the neo-colonial biases that made him, as a Russianist, an accomplice to this process.

Based on Micromégas, Dmitriev-Mamonov’s philosophical tale Dvorjanin-filosof (1769), turns Voltaire’s account of a cosmic trip into the depiction of a walk in a garden on a Russian estate. This scale reduction allows the Russian writer to develop two major masonic metaphors : the temple construction and the initiatory deambulation around the lodge, both of which are analyzed in full details in the present paper.
