Esther Lichtmann (1892-1990) was one of the close associates of Nikolai and Elena Roerich, a member of the esoteric Roerich circle in New York (the Circle or Krug in Russian). After the Roerich couple had settled in the Kulu Valley in India, she visited them twice, in 1929-1931 and in 1934. Living in the Roerichs’ “Himalayan Ashram” in Naggar, Esther kept a diary which contains most interesting records of Elena Roerich’s every-day life (while Nikolai and her elder son George/Yurii stayed in the usa and then in Europe, in 1929-1930). The main focus of these records is Esther’s daily conversations with Elena Ivanovna, being the paraphrase of everything she heard from the “Mother of the Agni Yoga” and the description of the things she personally witnessed. Esther Lichtmann’s diaries which make nine thick copybooks is a most valuable source of information about the life and activities of the Roerichs in their early Indian period, preceding the collapse of the Roerich Circle. In the Appendix to the article the reader will find excerpts from Lichtmann’s records focusing specifically on two topics – Elena’s recollections of her past and the description of her ailments.

The essay is a biographical sketch of Aleksandr Barchenko (1881-1938), a Russian occultist and scientist who experimented in parapsychology as early as 1911, and later, in 1920s-1930s, sought to integrate scientific knowledge and esoteric “ancient sciences” such as Kabbalah and the Tibetan Buddhist tantra. A follower of the French mystic Alexander Saint-Yves d’Alveydre, Barchenko believed in the existence of a super-advanced civilization on this planet in prehistorical times and worked hard to recover its lost legacy, supposedly encoded in various religious scriptures and monuments. In 1923 Barchenko set up a paramasonic lodge in Petrograd, the “Unified Labor Brotherhood”, after the model of Georgyi Gurjiev, and two years later he mounted an expedition to Afghanistan and Tibet to establish contacts with the secret monastic communities there, believed to possess the ancient superior lore. For over a decade, until 1937, he had worked under the auspices of the “Special Department” (Osobyi Otdel) affiliated with the OGPU (predecessor of the KGB) as head of a secret laboratory engaged in experimental work in the field of neuroenergetics. In the same years Barchenko made several attempts to introduce the Soviet leaders, K.Voroshilov and J. Stalin included, to his esoteric teachings hoping thereby to promote the construction of the communist society in the USSR.Drawing on his rich factual material, the author reflects on the interaction of occultism and the Soviet regime and concludes that the support given by the OGPU to people like Barchenko was something exceptional rather than a common practice. The OGPU-run Osobyi otdel sponsored Barchenko’s research only to employ his occult methods to political ends and one can hardly speak of any favoritism accorded by the Soviets to occultism in general.
