      <link>https://interfas.univ-tlse2.fr/slavicaoccitania/1633</link>
In 1812, ethnic Lithuania and most of Belarus had only belonged to the Russian Empire for 19 years, the rest of it (the Vitebsk and Mogilev provinces) for 40 years. The withdrawal of the Russians facing Napoleon can be explained mainly by this fact: they didn't really feel at home before Smolensk. Napoleon hardly knew anything about the land in which he was “sinking”: he didn't have the right maps, the reports from the Polish spies were not reliable. The emperors needed both experienced and local recruits. Barclay had had time to recruit a few of them, but Napoleon didn’t meet any goodwill among Polish landowners who dominated these areas. Even the serfs knew nothing about the abolition of serfdom which had been proclaimed in the Duchy of Warsaw. The Polish landowning nobility remained more loyal to Alexander I than what is claimed in a subsequent Polish legend. From June to October 1812, many Poles from the Duchy fought to impose upon Napoleon a restoration of the 1569 Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which irritated the French who had other worries. However, when he came back and for quite a long time, Alexander had to pretend he approved this project, especially to win the minds of the Duchy. We’re striving to show, by analyzing some of the directive of the seven Lithuanian provisional Government committees (ministries), that they were going against the French expectations and “departmental” authorities, without contact with the population. By crossing archives from Russian, Polish and French dignitaries it’s possible to reconstruct the ephemeral and fragile projects which led in six months to a catastrophe for the Poles and the French, but allowed the Russians to incorporate the “Polish provinces” (called “the Western Governments” after 1831) to the Empire for a century. </description>

<title>La Russie et les uniates. Esquisse historique</title>
      <link>https://interfas.univ-tlse2.fr/slavicaoccitania/1337</link>
This article examines the use of religion by Russia and its Catholic rivals to win the allegiance of Christian populations on their borderlands. Rome established the Uniat Church at the end of the sixteenth century to entice Orthodox Christians in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to Catholicism. However, during Polish partition in the eighteenth century’s latter decades, Russia incorporated large Uniat populations. St Petersburg initially tolerated the Uniats, who followed Byzantine rites albeit under Vatican authority, but in 1839, it began to prohibit their religion. Still present under the Habsburgs, Uniatism was used by Vienna to appeal to Ukrainians under tsarist rule up to the turn of the twentieth century, and also proved to be an important factor during World Wars I and II.Trad.
