From 1925 on, the Paris-based publishing house ymca-Press became one of the main spaces of the “TAMizdat” (“published over there”) which, together with the famous “SAMizdat" (“self-published”), offered a rare opportunity for dissident writers from Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe to be read. The manuscripts reached France either in the form of microfilms hidden in chocolate or caviar boxes, or with the diplomatic bag. Published in Paris in Russian, before being translated into French and other languages, some of these texts, such as Mikhail Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita or Heart of a Dog, and Solzhenitsyn’s gulag Archipelago, are world-famous. The archives kept by ymca-Press include manuscripts, letters and items, such as microfilms and microforms, as well as original editions, which have become bibliographic rarities. They offer an overview of an extremely rich chapter of Russian literary history and an insight into the role played by France in the preservation of a literary life in Soviet Russia. These documents are connected to “flagship” authors such as Ossip Mandelstam and Anna Akhmatova, but also to lesser-known or even anonymous writers. These manuscripts, letters and items represent a valuable source for researchers in history, literature and political science, who wish to study the phenomenon of exile, dissident literature, or clandestine publishing.

« L’Europe-Sodome » ?

In the context of a general interest in Proust among the Russian emigration which became evident during the encounters of the French-Russian studio and from the first translations of In Search of Lost Time by Boris Schloezer and Galina Kuznetsova, the approach of Dmitry Merezhkovsky was very specific. In a few citations from his monumental Mystery of the West: Atlantis-Europe (English edition title: Atlantis/Europe: The Secret of the West), in the chapter “Europe-Sodom”, he cursed Europe as a place where abided all the sins of humanity, as well as Proust himself: “the writer also dwells in Sodom, and even if he has been ‘exempt from the fire from above’, it was only partly, he was severely burnt, half-dead”. Still, despite this severe diagnosis and the condemning tone of a prophet, it is thanks to Proust that both Merezhkovsky and Gippius found the means to reconcile these oppositions, to approach ‘the mystery of the third sex’ which they tried to resolve in terms of a “tripartite union” with Dmitry Filosofov; finally to indicate to the perishing world both in the West and in the East that its resurrection was still possible.

Boris Grigoriev—a Russian “World of Art” artist who gained a world-wide reputation as a painter through emigration—and Ivan Bunin—laureate of the Pushkin prize in Russia and a Nobel-prize winner in Europe—, though they were not in direct contact with each other, were engaged in a cultural dialogue in a language they both knew well: that of the revival of “Primitivism” in the culture of the Russian Silver Age. Grigoriev, inspired by the art of the Orthodox icon and Flemish Primitives, constructed his pictures on the principle of the “reverse perspective” elaborated by Pavel Florensky. Bunin transposed some of the techniques of primitive painters into his elliptic writing, which was inspired by the lubok, proverbs, and folk songs. The characters depicted by both artists encapsulate an “Essence of Being.” The artists thus analyze a relatively recent, tragic past and broaden their reflection, from the Faces of Russia to the Faces of the world, in accordance both with the titles of Grigoriev’s monumental panels and the logic of Bunin’s work.
