This paper deals with the ambivalence of agitprop in contemporary feminist circus. Agitprop is defined here aesthetically and politically as a form inherited from the historical practice and theatre theory of Piscator. By comparing Contra by Laura Murphy and Les Petits Bonnets by Pascaline Herveet we demonstrate that the political meaning of agitprop and its effects on the audience are quite different in each one of these recent feminist productions. As a form directly recycled for being performative and efficient, it can produce a typical thetic postmodernist art (Contra). As a form which is distanced and dialogically related to other forms and devices such as fiction, it can nourish a contemporary political feminist and queer circus (Les Petits Bonnets).

In France, Kantor’s theory has been relatively unexplored in spite of its undeniable influence on contemporary theatre, possibly because his philosophy of the theatre, like Meyerhold’s, was a dynamic, continuously evolving one and did not cohere into a fixed system. This article deals with several important aspects of Kantor’s theory, examining and comparing them with other theatrical theories (Brecht, Craig, Artaud, Stanislavski…) and articulating them with some current trends in contemporary theatre: dialogic interactions between stage and text, the reluctance to let theatrical spaces dictate the form of performances, the re-definition of theatrical pieces as works in progress, the re-definition of the spectator as supportive and emancipated viewer, the re-definition of “drama” as a function of stage reality, the vision of the actor primarily as an object and/or as a performer… Traduction : Olga Cadars
