Unlike Russian literature, Russian linguistics and philosophy of language—which form a gigantic corpus—are little known in the West. Yet not only do they deserve more than ignorance, they are also, despite constant denial, an integral part of the Western cultural world. This thesis is supported here by a study of the primitive world of linguist Nikolai Marr, whose calamitous reputation masks the teeming intellectual world of a time and place that are fascinating to this day: the Soviet Union of the 1920s-1940s, a distorting mirror of the “Western” world.

Voloshinov, Sociology and the Enlightenment Voloshinov is not Bakhtin’s clone, but a fully-fledged scientist, whose biography is now well known. But, unlike his reception by Western marxist intellectuals, he was far from being a revolutionary. He was the opposite of Gramsci, his contemporary. If we rely on the American sociologist Robert Nisbet’s thesis that anti-revolutionary conservatism (from J. de Maistre and L. de Bonald to A. Comte) is the ideological origin of sociology, we can see that, in many respects, Voloshinov fits perfectly in this conservative line of thought, for which the individual is but a product of «social» determinism. With his notions of enthymeme and choral support, Voloshinov builds a model of a well-behaved society, where «the people» communicate their thoughts to one another while taking into account each other, a world in which literature takes the place of real «everyday life», where sociality is reduced to interindividual interaction, and where social division is reduced to inferior / superior hierarchy; finally, a world of full consciousnesses and not of divided subjects, in total harmony with a «milieu», seen rather in an ecological than in a sociological way; a world of fullness and of an explicit refusal of any notion of unconscious. This paper will study this world in its particular historical context, which owes more to Croce and Vossler than to Saussure or Benveniste.
