The uniqueness of nineteenth-century bookstores lay in their close, often tense relationship with political power. During this period of rapid growth, booksellers, printers, and publishers constantly had to navigate the restrictions imposed by the authorities. This article examines the creation of the first independent Polish bookstore in 1835, founded by exiles of the Great Emigration. By studying the network of French and Polish booksellers who distributed Slavic works in Paris, the author offers a typology of the collections available in the nineteenth century. The analysis of the catalogues reveals a dual influence on these publications: the regulatory framework imposed by the French state on printed material and the political divisions that ran across the Polish émigré community. Specyfika księgarstwa xix wieku polegała na stałych i trudnych relacjach, jakie utrzymywało ono z władzami. Zawody księgarza, drukarza i wydawcy, które w tym okresie uległy intensywnemu rozwojowi i ukształtowały nowy pejzaż książki, musiały nieustannie uwzględniać ten wymiar. Okres analizowany w niniejszym artykule przyniósł powstanie pierwszej niezależnej księgarni polskiej w 1835 roku, a następnie Księgarni Katolickiej Polskiej w Paryżu – obydwie założone przez powstańców i emigrantów fali Wielkiej Emigracji.
