The purpose of this article is to introduce a newly identified source for the study of the political history of the Turgenev Library in Paris. This document, kept in the Library’s internal archives and hitherto undescribed, is a kind of “logbook”, in which volunteers responsible for the Library’s day-to-day management left written notes for other volunteers and for members of the Board of Directors. These entries provide valuable insights into the Library’s internal life before 1917, i.e. during a period that remains poorly documented. In addition to this, they represent a significant source for analyzing the role of the Turgenev Library within the political landscape of the Russian-speaking diaspora in Paris.

A Political History of the Czechoslovak Collections of the Paris Institute of Slavonic Studies This article explores the development of the Czechoslovak collections of the Paris Institute of Slavonic Studies, with a special focus on the roles played by two key collectors: André Mazon and Vladimir Peška. Drawing primarily on sources from the Institute’s archives, the study examines how the private and institutional identities of the two collectors impacted the collections, which, as a result, largely echoed the dramatic history of the 20th century. The collecting strategy developed in response to Czechoslovakia’s political history aimed both at applying scientific objectivity while keeping an evident political positioning.

This article traces the genesis and development of the Ukrainian collections held at the bulac, which stem from the former holdings of the Library of Oriental Languages and the Paris Institute of Slavonic Studies. It explores how, in a context marked by the exile of intellectual elites and the centralising policies of the ussr, both institutional and individual actors contributed to the emergence of Ukrainian studies in France. Attention is given to the legacy of Élie Borschak, a mediator between Ukrainian and French scholarly circles, as well as to the presence in the bulac collections of publications from the Ukrainian Executed Renaissance, a period of literary and artistic effervescence, which started in the 1920s, before being brutally interrupted by Stalinist repression in the 1930s. Through a cross-analysis of provenance, political context, and institutional trajectories, the study shows how French libraries became custodians of an intellectual memory long subjected to censorship, while highlighting the historiographical and symbolic significance of these collections.

Since its foundation as the “Bibliothèque et musée de la guerre” in 1917, the “Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine”, which was renamed “La contemporaine - bibliothèque, archives, musée des mondes contemporains” in 2017, has developed a policy of documenting the activities of exiled groups and dissidents from the former Russian Empire, the ussr and European countries with socialist political regimes. This contribution presents the activities of the library’s “Slavonic” Service, looking at the actors and the rationale behind the documentation of political exile from the ussr and Socialist Eastern Europe. It also offers some thoughts on documentary awareness in exile based on the results of the dissinvent project.

After the 1830 Uprising and the Russification of the Polish population, it became essential to create spaces to preserve Polish intellectual achievements. The uprises exiled in France set up several literary and scientific institutions in Paris. Officially founded in 1842, the Batignolles Polish Library established itself as the main opposition institution to the Paris Polish Library, then under the direction of Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, the leader of the conservative factions of the Polish Great Emigration. In the 1840s, the Batignolles Polish Library was only a modest school library near the Polish school in Paris. But from the 1850s onwards, its collection expanded to include significant contributions by activists, writers, politicians and political groups. This article examines the multiple functions fulfilled by the Batignolles Library and compares them to those of the Paris Polish Library, in order to highlight the evolution of its spheres of influence over thirty years and its impact on both national culture and the Polish emigration in France.

This study provides a brief description and an attempt at a political history of the Schnitzler collections held in Strasbourg libraries. These collections comprise of the book collection (held at the André Malraux City Library) and personal papers (held at the bnu) of Strasbourg-based historian Jean-Henri Schnitzler. They trace the fascinating story of this Alsatian historian's passion for the Russian Empire under the July Monarchy and the Second French Empire. Taking up Charles Corbet's hypothesis that Schnitzler was an agent of influence of the Tsarist government, the article supports this theory through an analysis of the historian's correspondence and integrates the history of the constitution of his book collection into that of his political engagement. In conclusion, the author notes the invisibility, which stroke the works on Poland in descriptions of Schnitzler's collection and questions the neo-colonial biases that made him, as a Russianist, an accomplice to this process.

French libraries host significant Slavonic collections, with items dating back to periods prior to the 17th century. The development of trade and diplomatic relations, as well as the growing interest in Slavic countries among informed circles, led to the significant expansion of such collections in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The article provides a concise overview of these collections and connects them with the dramatic timeline of European history and the genesis of Slavonic studies as a formal discipline at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A special focus is given to the efforts of French pioneers in the field of Slavonic studies to enrich these collections by collecting both books and archival items.
