Voloshinov, Sociology and the Enlightenment Voloshinov is not Bakhtin’s clone, but a fully-fledged scientist, whose biography is now well known. But, unlike his reception by Western marxist intellectuals, he was far from being a revolutionary. He was the opposite of Gramsci, his contemporary. If we rely on the American sociologist Robert Nisbet’s thesis that anti-revolutionary conservatism (from J. de Maistre and L. de Bonald to A. Comte) is the ideological origin of sociology, we can see that, in many respects, Voloshinov fits perfectly in this conservative line of thought, for which the individual is but a product of «social» determinism. With his notions of enthymeme and choral support, Voloshinov builds a model of a well-behaved society, where «the people» communicate their thoughts to one another while taking into account each other, a world in which literature takes the place of real «everyday life», where sociality is reduced to interindividual interaction, and where social division is reduced to inferior / superior hierarchy; finally, a world of full consciousnesses and not of divided subjects, in total harmony with a «milieu», seen rather in an ecological than in a sociological way; a world of fullness and of an explicit refusal of any notion of unconscious. This paper will study this world in its particular historical context, which owes more to Croce and Vossler than to Saussure or Benveniste.

The problem of the origins of language in the works of V.N. Voloshinov and N.Ja. Marr This enquiry is an analysis of V.N. Voloshinov’s article « Čto takoe jazyk? » [What is a language?]. Written in 1930 and dealing with the problem of language origins, this article has many points in common with the linguistic theories of N.Ja. Marr. After comparing the approaches of Marr and Voloshinov with the problem of language evolution, an answer is proposed to the question whether Marr had a direct influence on Voloshinov or whether one should rather speak of a common intellectual background to their theories.

The Experience of Language through Form and Voice. An Essay with Yakubinsky and Voloshinov Both Yakubinsky and Voloshinov aproach the phenomenon of language as activity within a society. In this perspective, verbal activity shows itself in diverse forms, in turn determined by the situation and its interlocutors, as well as structured by types of interactions. Plurality becomes a core notion in describing language, plurality expressing itself in certain forms. For Yakubinsky, these forms are to be linguistically analysed, and his analysis actually reveals a movement of back and forth within language: depending of the form, the « linguistic factor itself » can be more or less developped. As Voloshinov conceives the real substance of language not as system of abstracted forms but as constituted by verbal interaction and as realized in utterances, the issue of the form of the utterance is to him a core one. Voloshinov’s analysis demonstrates these forms as due to shared and lived experiences, accomplished in sociocultural determined situations and saturated by social evaluations. As form, intonation is to Voloshinov of primary importance for the construction of the utterance – and thus, voice. Voice is also found in consciousness, because of the dialogical structure of reflection, involving at least two voices. Voice indicates, expresses, and manifests a certain verbal form in a certain way, thus belonging to all verbal forms as integral part, by no means a mere envelope. The contribution will develop the notions of voice and form with the aim of conceiving verbal forms for the social and shared domain, as well as within the domain belonging to the individual’s mental activity (social but un-shared) ; this leads eventually to consider the role voice in consciousness.

(Trad. du russe par Ekaterina Velmezova) Saussure, Voloshinov and Bakhtine In his bookMarxism and the Philosophy of LanguageV.N.Voloshinov severely criticizes F. de Saussure’s whole linguistic theory, paying particular attention to the Saussurean notion of langue. According to Voloshinov, language [langue] exists neither objectively, nor subjectively for Saussure, since it is nothing but an abstraction which proves useful to certain practical purposes (such as the interpretation of texts or foreign language learning for instance). It could be explained by the fact that Saussure had not spoken about the nature / essence [suščnost’] of language. Such radical negation of Saussurean ideas and their severe criticism in the book of Voloshinov could be compared only with a very negative reception of Saussure by Japanese linguist M. Tokieda. In Bakhtine’s later works (« Discourse in the Novel » [Slovo v romane], « The Problem of Speech Genres » [Problema rečevyx žanrov]) the attitude towards Saussure is different: Bakhtine accepts the Saussurean conception of language, even if he insists on the necessity to complete it by the theory of utterance [vyskazyvanie] and the theory of speech genres [rečevye žanry].
