Canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) in 2006 as a new martyr saint, Saint Maria of Gatchina is exemplary of the dissociation of two dimensions of holiness in contemporary Russia. The first dimension, political and memorial, is embodied by the new martyrs. It highlights the strength of the Christian faith in the face of political violence. It is of interest to only a very small minority of believers. The second one, acclaimed by the vast majority of the faithful, is therapeutic and charitable. It is related to Saint Maria’s ability to bring help, solutions and consolation in daily life. Based on an ethnographic and documentary study of the cult of Saint Maria of Gatchina, the article analyses intra-Orthodox struggles while emphasising the attractiveness of therapeutic and charitable uses. It questions the existence of a unified contemporary narrative about the new martyrs of the faith, including believers who place themselves under the authority of the Patriarchate of Moscow.

Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833) – one of the most revered saints in Orthodox Christianity – was proclaimed “protector of the Russian nuclear strike force” by the Russian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate. Closed by the Bolshevik authorities, the Sarov monastery was later transformed into a secret military atomic research centre where the Soviet atomic bomb was developed. Since the collapse of the ussr and the restitution to the Church of the relics of Saint Seraphim in 1991, close collaboration has been established between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Nuclear Research Institute which continues to work at the Sarov site. Religious leaders and nuclear scientists, as well as political leaders, have collectively developed, over the last thirty years, a theory which tends to claim that Russia’s capacity to preserve its sovereignty and its civilisational identity lies in its Orthodox religion and in its atomic weapon, now placed under the patronage of Saint Seraphim. The article examines the arguments put forward by the proponents of what some call “nuclear orthodoxy” and shows how the historical and mystical links they wish to establish with the image of Saint Seraphim are a rewriting, and even a distortion, of history in general and of the ideals of the humble monk of Sarov.

Since Putin came to power, Alexander Nevsky has increasingly come to be seen as a state saint whose popularity is encouraged by television and school textbooks. The order that bears his name has been renewed and decorates the most deserving people. In 2021, the ceremonies to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nevsky were the occasion for many carefully orchestrated events designed to demonstrate the unity of the Church, the authorities, the army and society around a few major patriotic ideas. A wide range of media, including films, stories and monuments, help to spread a simplified image of Alexander as a hero as well as a saint. Alexander is seen above all as having vanquished the West and is presented as a diplomat who championed relations with Asia. On the eve of the invasion of Ukraine, his image was used more and more aggressively and was part of the preparations for an armed confrontation with the West. The cult of Alexander is both religious and political. It can be said to be part of a kind of theology of war that accompanies and justifies the Special Military Operation.
