Starting from a recent even—the refusal to include Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia as a symbol of Bulgaria in the Mini-Europe park in Brussels—this article examines the meaning and representations associated with this Russian saint in modern and contemporary Bulgaria. We begin by establishing the context in which this saint emerged in this Balkan country during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, after which Bulgaria gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. The adoption of the saint is closely linked to his symbolic connection with Emperor Alexander II, the “Tsar Liberator” for the young Bulgarian state. As its patron saint, Alexander Nevsky was integrated into certain aspects of political and ceremonial life, as well as into a commemorative policy that went hand in hand with the construction of memorial churches. In the second part, we review the memorial churches and chapels built in post-Ottoman Bulgaria and dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky. By examining these cases through the lens of the key actors involved, we observe a variety of motivations underlying the establishment of these churches which serve both as places of worship and sites of remembrance. The third and final part focuses on Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The process of its construction and its integration into the public space of the Bulgarian capital city reflects a range of issues and shifting political dynamics over half a century. We demonstrate how, in addition to its commemorative function (related to Russia), the cathedral progressively became a symbol of political and religious emancipation, acquired heritage value, and remained open to multiple uses.

Since Putin came to power, Alexander Nevsky has increasingly come to be seen as a state saint whose popularity is encouraged by television and school textbooks. The order that bears his name has been renewed and decorates the most deserving people. In 2021, the ceremonies to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nevsky were the occasion for many carefully orchestrated events designed to demonstrate the unity of the Church, the authorities, the army and society around a few major patriotic ideas. A wide range of media, including films, stories and monuments, help to spread a simplified image of Alexander as a hero as well as a saint. Alexander is seen above all as having vanquished the West and is presented as a diplomat who championed relations with Asia. On the eve of the invasion of Ukraine, his image was used more and more aggressively and was part of the preparations for an armed confrontation with the West. The cult of Alexander is both religious and political. It can be said to be part of a kind of theology of war that accompanies and justifies the Special Military Operation.
