In the early 1920s, Nicolas Roerich (1874–1947) painted a whole series of works inspired by the life of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. In the early 1930s, the artist increasingly associated his name with the founder of the Trinity Monastery, using for this purpose a portrait of the saint that he painted in 1932 and which, in fact, turned out to be a hidden self-portrait. Studying how the artist presented himself within Russian émigré circles as a reincarnation of Saint Sergius provides an opportunity to examine the guru-like status he claimed during his lifetime and to grasp certain distinctive features of Agni Yoga, the New Religious Movement he founded together with his wife, Helena Roerich. In present-day Russia, despite the government’s hostility toward minority religious groups, Nicolas Roerich—whose name remains linked to Saint Sergius—continues to enjoy a surprising aura. Attempting to understand this phenomenon raises the question of the persistence of new religiosities in Russia (and in other countries) and how they challenge the notion of sainthood.

The current environmental and economic crisis makes the figure of Francis emblematic of an ethic of simplicity and frugality expressed through the aesthetics of poverty that have become crucial. The expression “Francis of Assisi, the first green” may seem forced or even improper, but it invites reflection. This distant figure from the Middle Ages is still relevant as the first poet of the Italian language and as a precursor of a “medieval feeling for nature”. This “laughing saint” encourages lightness and humility. Many diverse and unexpected personalities, on both sides of the Alps, have been passionate about the legacy of a man whose belief they did not always share. Notable figures include Liliana Cavani, Dario Fo, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, but also Christian Bobin, Gilles Clément, François Cheng, Joseph Delteil, Julien Green, and Simone Weil, among others. The encyclical “Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home”, published by Pope Francis in 2015, testifies to this exceptional relevance. This paper posits a vitality of Franciscan thought, which seems linked to the character that Francis of Assisi has become over time: a character in cinema, theatre, and the subject of stories and paintings. How does the unique perspective he had on the world and humanity resonate with our current concerns? To reassess contemporary productions of Italian and French cultures, directly or partially inspired by Francis of Assisi, this contribution questions the reality, originality, and modernity of this heritage from an ecocritical perspective. Энциклика «Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home», опубликованная Папой Франциском в 2015 году, свидетельствует об исключительной актуальности этого вопроса.

This study seeks to question how the figure of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux has been renewed in the context of various historical disasters which occurred during the first half of the 20th century (World War I, Bolshevik Revolution, the Terror under Franco), by bringing into dialogue the voice of Georges Bernanos in his book The Great Cemeteries Under the Moon and that of Zinaïda Hippius in a press article and mystical poems. Light is shed on the subject by Françoise Davoine’s book Voice of Care in a Traumatic Context, which draws on knowledge from different disciplines: sociology, literature, psychoanalysis. We seek to highlight the missionary and prophetic relevance of Saint Thérèse while asking the question of the aesthetic, spiritual, even therapeutic effectiveness of the spirit of childhood and its language.

This interdisciplinary study combining historical-political and cultural-anthropological approaches, as well as hagiography, hymnography and iconography, reveals the complex history of the celebration of the Synaxis of All Saints of Russia, in close connection with the emergence and development of Russian nationalism and imperialism. Special attention in this study is paid to the opposition and transformation of the terms “Russia” and “Rus” as socio-political, ethnocultural and historical concepts. We refute the historiographical myth that this feast day appeared in the 16th-17th centuries. The celebration appears to us as an invented tradition, a simulacrum, created only in the 20th-21st centuries (1918, 1946, 2013) against a background of socio-political cataclysms in Russia, even if certain late medieval elements were used to create it. Today, this celebration becomes a means of cultural appropriation for the Russian church and society. The comparison with the liturgical practices of other Orthodox churches emphasises the specifically Russian character of this celebration and its inconsistency with the universal Orthodox tradition.

Canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) in 2006 as a new martyr saint, Saint Maria of Gatchina is exemplary of the dissociation of two dimensions of holiness in contemporary Russia. The first dimension, political and memorial, is embodied by the new martyrs. It highlights the strength of the Christian faith in the face of political violence. It is of interest to only a very small minority of believers. The second one, acclaimed by the vast majority of the faithful, is therapeutic and charitable. It is related to Saint Maria’s ability to bring help, solutions and consolation in daily life. Based on an ethnographic and documentary study of the cult of Saint Maria of Gatchina, the article analyses intra-Orthodox struggles while emphasising the attractiveness of therapeutic and charitable uses. It questions the existence of a unified contemporary narrative about the new martyrs of the faith, including believers who place themselves under the authority of the Patriarchate of Moscow.

Historical figures such as Ivan the Terrible, Rasputin, Stalin, and even Vladimir Putin, very far from being models of holiness, are now the subject of attempts for their canonisation on the part of political-religious fundamentalist groups, but also, for Stalin, from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, which has annexed orthodoxy to its ideology. Icons of all these pseudo-Saints are for sale in certain churches and on the Internet. The belief in a Russophobic conspiracy is used to reject the criticisms aimed at these figures. The condemnation by the Russian Orthodox Church of these wild canonisations remains without effect and speaks of a certain stupefaction of society.

In most Christian churches, canonisation processes are lengthy and complex. This leads to great expectations that are not always met. Among the saintly figures of Russian Orthodoxy who are still awaiting canonisation, two have attracted our attention: the priests Pavel Florensky (1882-1937) and Alexander Men (1935-1990). They were considered brilliant intellectuals of their time, serving their Church with all their might and ending their lives in martyrdom. Although revered by some believers, they did not seem to be “politically correct” enough to be elevated to the altars. Should we add to the traditional criteria for the recognition of sainthood in the Orthodox Church (life, miracles, relics, popular veneration) the criterion of opportunity?

Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833) – one of the most revered saints in Orthodox Christianity – was proclaimed “protector of the Russian nuclear strike force” by the Russian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate. Closed by the Bolshevik authorities, the Sarov monastery was later transformed into a secret military atomic research centre where the Soviet atomic bomb was developed. Since the collapse of the ussr and the restitution to the Church of the relics of Saint Seraphim in 1991, close collaboration has been established between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Nuclear Research Institute which continues to work at the Sarov site. Religious leaders and nuclear scientists, as well as political leaders, have collectively developed, over the last thirty years, a theory which tends to claim that Russia’s capacity to preserve its sovereignty and its civilisational identity lies in its Orthodox religion and in its atomic weapon, now placed under the patronage of Saint Seraphim. The article examines the arguments put forward by the proponents of what some call “nuclear orthodoxy” and shows how the historical and mystical links they wish to establish with the image of Saint Seraphim are a rewriting, and even a distortion, of history in general and of the ideals of the humble monk of Sarov.

Starting from a recent even—the refusal to include Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia as a symbol of Bulgaria in the Mini-Europe park in Brussels—this article examines the meaning and representations associated with this Russian saint in modern and contemporary Bulgaria. We begin by establishing the context in which this saint emerged in this Balkan country during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, after which Bulgaria gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. The adoption of the saint is closely linked to his symbolic connection with Emperor Alexander II, the “Tsar Liberator” for the young Bulgarian state. As its patron saint, Alexander Nevsky was integrated into certain aspects of political and ceremonial life, as well as into a commemorative policy that went hand in hand with the construction of memorial churches. In the second part, we review the memorial churches and chapels built in post-Ottoman Bulgaria and dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky. By examining these cases through the lens of the key actors involved, we observe a variety of motivations underlying the establishment of these churches which serve both as places of worship and sites of remembrance. The third and final part focuses on Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The process of its construction and its integration into the public space of the Bulgarian capital city reflects a range of issues and shifting political dynamics over half a century. We demonstrate how, in addition to its commemorative function (related to Russia), the cathedral progressively became a symbol of political and religious emancipation, acquired heritage value, and remained open to multiple uses.

Since Putin came to power, Alexander Nevsky has increasingly come to be seen as a state saint whose popularity is encouraged by television and school textbooks. The order that bears his name has been renewed and decorates the most deserving people. In 2021, the ceremonies to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nevsky were the occasion for many carefully orchestrated events designed to demonstrate the unity of the Church, the authorities, the army and society around a few major patriotic ideas. A wide range of media, including films, stories and monuments, help to spread a simplified image of Alexander as a hero as well as a saint. Alexander is seen above all as having vanquished the West and is presented as a diplomat who championed relations with Asia. On the eve of the invasion of Ukraine, his image was used more and more aggressively and was part of the preparations for an armed confrontation with the West. The cult of Alexander is both religious and political. It can be said to be part of a kind of theology of war that accompanies and justifies the Special Military Operation.
