The spiritual teaching of the Roerichs – the Agni Yoga – gives utmost importance to the myth of the Mahatma as it had been developped in the 19th century by Helens Blavatsky. The Roerichs have also connected it to the ancient Buddhist myth of Shambhala, thus giving this latter Tibetan myth an eminently personal interpretation. In the Agni Yoga Shambhala is considered to be the Mahatma’s headquarters and a perfect organizational model. From this mysterious country, hidden in the Himalayas, a community of scientists and engineers surreptitiously guides the world. It is obvious that the French occultist, the marquis Saint-Yves d’Alveydre, played an important role in the transformation of the myth with his book The Mission of India in Europe (La Mission de l’Inde en Europe). It is also easy to establish a parallel between the Roerichs’ Shambhala and the theme of the «progressors» as seen in science-fiction novels.

The activities of Russian émigré painter Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) and US Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace (1888–1965) provide rich material for a student of social and spiritual utopias. In my paper, I focus on an intriguing aspect of their activities: a spiritual and geopolitical project they referred to as the Great Plan or the Sacred Union of the East. Sponsored by Wallace, between 1933 and 1935, Roerich embarked on a botanical expedition to Manchuria and Inner Mongolia, searching for draught resistant plants and simultaneously seeking to launch in those areas a theocracy built on Buddhist and Theosophical ideas. While some authors downplay the spiritual and geopolitical aspects of that expedition, others debunk it as a cunning scheme. Using documentary records that became recently available to researchers, I suggest that we look at the Manchurian expedition from a new angle. If one puts Roerich and Wallace in the historical context of the interwar period, their botanical expedition with a spiritual and geopolitical twist will not appear as an aberration but rather a natural manifestation of the idealistic social engineering mindset prevailing at that time. I show that the Wallace-Roerich venture perfectly fit the high modernity spirit of that time, which was heavily informed by ideas of extreme statism, scientism, and various reckless social and political experiments. In fact, the Manchurian event gives us a small insight into the utopian idealism that dominated the minds of Western intellectual and political elites in the 1920s and the 1930s.

The following paper provides an overview of articles published in the Tibetan-language newspaper yul phyogs so so’i gsar ‘gyur me long (Melong) on Nicholas Roerich and his family. The Melong, one of the first Tibetan-language newspapers, was published from 1925 until 1963 in the Indo-Tibetan border town of Kalimpong. The time span coincides with the Roerichs’ extensive travels through Asia, including a long expedition to central Tibet in 1926-7. Seen through the light of the Roerich’s global engagement with an array of press outlets, it is not surprising that articles on the Roerichs can be found in the Melong, as well. This paper thus asks the question: How was Roerich presented to a Tibetan audience? Reading the articles shows that not only Roerich used the newspaper for positive publicity. Also the Tibetan authors used Roerich for their own purposes. Its reading opens up new perspectives on Roerich’s usage of local press outlets, but also on the understanding of the Melong. In specific, the newspaper’s performance in a field of tension between the spreading of “Western" modernisms and its ability of appropriating the very same to local particularities can be well observed.
