With an idealized Theosophical view of Tibet, Nicholas Roerich with his wife Elena and his son George (Yuri) started in March 1925 out from Darjeeling on their long Central Asian expedition, which lasted until 1928. In Urga (Ulan Bator), they openly developed a plan to travel to Tibet. Although the Roerichs were well aware of that the exclusive right to issue travel permits for Westerners was reserved by Lhasa, they applied in Urga for an entry permit as Buddhist pilgrims. After months of negotiations with the Tibetan agent there, who was apparently only authorized to issue pilgrim permits for Mongolians, they somehow succeeded to get the desired travel permits. However, they were stopped by Tibetan patrols in October 1927 near Nagchu. Despite numerous negotiations, the expedition members’ passports and status as pilgrims were not recognized and they were forced to sit out the Tibetan winter at an altitude of ca. 4700 m until March 1928, although the Tibetan authorities were only preventing them from entering autonomous Tibet and there was nothing to hinder them returning to Mongolia or China. Thus the exalted and idealized view of Tibet held by Roerich and the other members had been devastated by the failure of the expedition, Roerich and his companions became the harshest critics of everything Tibetan. After their return, they launched a widespread press campaign of vilification in the US and India, discrediting everything to do with Tibet, which had surprisingly little influence on later representations of Tibet.

The following paper provides an overview of articles published in the Tibetan-language newspaper yul phyogs so so’i gsar ‘gyur me long (Melong) on Nicholas Roerich and his family. The Melong, one of the first Tibetan-language newspapers, was published from 1925 until 1963 in the Indo-Tibetan border town of Kalimpong. The time span coincides with the Roerichs’ extensive travels through Asia, including a long expedition to central Tibet in 1926-7. Seen through the light of the Roerich’s global engagement with an array of press outlets, it is not surprising that articles on the Roerichs can be found in the Melong, as well. This paper thus asks the question: How was Roerich presented to a Tibetan audience? Reading the articles shows that not only Roerich used the newspaper for positive publicity. Also the Tibetan authors used Roerich for their own purposes. Its reading opens up new perspectives on Roerich’s usage of local press outlets, but also on the understanding of the Melong. In specific, the newspaper’s performance in a field of tension between the spreading of “Western" modernisms and its ability of appropriating the very same to local particularities can be well observed.
