Pourquoi s’intéresser à Nicolas Roerich ? (Ouverture)

To introduce Nicholas Roerich to whoever knows hardly anything about him is a real challenge. Any researcher interested in this painter, decorator, teacher, poet, writer, archaeologist, traveler, mystic, theosophist who founded with his wife Elena a New Religious Movement, the Agni Yoga, needs a huge amount of skills to deal with such different fields as arts, archeology, history, esotericism, religious studies, and even psychopathology… The fact that Roerich’s personality and work have been the subject of divergent assessments adds to the difficulty. Hence our choice to open this collection of papers with a long introductory text which dwells anew on the different aspects of his bigger-than-life personality, his unique life and his spiritual heritage. In doing so, we hope to have demonstrated how the so-called «Roerich’s case» is an excellent red thread to map out the relationship between art, politics and esotericism as well as the image Russia has of the East.

There was a certain press that proved to be virulent towards Nicolas Roerich and his undertakings. In 1928, an imprecatory albeit well-informed article denounced the artist as having played an important part in the Judeo-masonic, Bolshevik and Theosophical conspiracy. The text appeared in Dvuglavyj Orel [The Eagle With Two heads], a journal which was published by Russian monarchists in exile and received acclaim in the Revue internationale des sociétés secrètes, a conservative, nationalistic and Catholic French review, which shared a same obsession with the masonic, Jewish, communist and occultist peril. If in the case of the Agni Yoga adepts the prestige of secrecy constituted an acknowledgement of spiritual authority, in the case of others, who were won over, here and there, by some worrying collective paranoia, the secret which Roerich and his wife like to surround themselves with simply corroborated the existence of the “worldwide occult Power”.

The present article examines a special input of Latvia in the development of the Roerich movement. After 1917, Latvia played an important role in the formation of the network of Theosophists who had emigrated as refugees from the Bolshevik regime. The development of a new branch of Theosophy, i.e. Agni Yoga / Living Ethics was closely related to Latvia as the place of origin of the Roerich family. Starting their activities, Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) and his wife Helena Roerich (1879-1955) founded small groups of people sharing their views in various countries all over the world that gradually developed into the first centres of their movement. Established in the early 1920s as a Master’s/Riga Lodge, Latvian Roerich Society was one of the first groups of the Roerich movement in the world. With their activities in Latvia, the Roerichs hoped to set a base for spreading their doctrine to Russia. In the 1920s and 1930s, Riga became the publishing centre of theosophical literature. Books published in Riga were circulated in Lithuania, Estonia, Russia and Germany. Among approximately fifty books printed in Riga, of special significance was H. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine, published for the first time in Russian (1937) in Helena Roerich’s translation. Apart from publishing, Latvia had also become the centre of Theosophical writing. The first manuscript of encyclopaedic dictionary of the Roerichs’ teaching was produced in Latvia, along with the thematic index of Agni Yoga/Living Ethics books that was later revised and extended. After opening of Nicholas Roerich Museum (1937) Riga was frequently visited by Theosophists from neighbouring countries. Before World War II, the activity of Roerich followers in Latvia reached its highest peak in 1937, when the first Conference of the Roerich Societies of the Baltic States took place in Riga.
