Moscow actionism is based on the public and demonstrative contestation of authority, be it artistic or political. The aim of the actions is to show the iniquitous and arbitrary way in which this power is exercised in the public space. In this article, we will show that actionism has ideological similarities with the positions of the 1860s Russian nihilists, to which they do not refer, however. If the term “nihilist” is applied to them, it is above all in the negative sense that it has taken on in everyday language. By tracing the history of the movement and relying on texts written by its representatives, we will question the return of this position of contestation of power in Russia, as well as the rarity of references to a Russian tradition of radical protest in this form of political art.

In 1929, an article on nihilist (visual) artists was published in the journal of the powerful Association of Artists of the Revolution (Iskusstvo v massy). It was to be the only time the term would be used in the field of the visual arts. We analyze the anonymous debate it provoked in the struggle for an art form that aimed at becoming the art of the proletariat. The terms used to devalue certain artistic trends—starting from the 19th century and up to the contemporary era—are contextualised through a study of all the issues of the journal. This allows us to put into perspective a whole area of art criticism from the late 1920s, both by analyzing the authors and their debates, and by examining the place of images in this debate, a place that often renders meaningless peremptory assertions about what art should (or should not) be.

Chernyshevsky’s essay The Æsthetic Relations of Art To Reality, although often seen as the repellent exemplar of a primitive, pre-modern aesthetic, is nonetheless an intriguing laboratory of notions and open-ended avenues, all of which tend to let art sail towards a horizon going beyond its stated limitations and constraints (such as responding to social demand and reproducing reality). While still firmly anchored by the philosopher to the field of reality and life, art was nonetheless paradoxically invited to suspend its privileges of interiority in order to embrace an exteriority full of modern promises and new empowerments, which later theories of art, particularly those of the avant-garde, would come to recognise.

By studying the case of Kirillov, a very peculiar character in the novel Demons, this article aims to explore the links that Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche built between European atheism and Russian nihilism. Although both authors held radically opposing values, they surprisingly made a similar assessment of the distress associated with the decline of Christian and metaphysical values in the second half of the 19th century. Refusing any compromise, Kirillov pushed the logic of atheism and of the opposition between Christian and earthly values to their ultimate extremity. The paper will try to demonstrate that, beyond the proximity of the psychological analysis by the two authors, Kirillov’s atheism emerges as an atheism of revelation, a truly Christlike atheism, based on the conviction that truth is not earthly, antipodal to Nietzsche’s Dionysian love of the Earth.

The article is devoted to analysing the issues of nihilism, both existential (the motive for suicide) and political, in Alexandre Kojève’s unfinished treatise, as well as in his lectures on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. In Atheism (1931), Kojève constructs a very abstract and at the same time very personal analytical perspective, discussing the nature of the relationship between God and man, suicide, murder, and death in general. This personal aspect brings the treatise closer to another unfinished project bearing the same title, Dostoyevsky’s novel Atheism (1868-1869). Dostoyevsky also addresses the theme of the loss of faith, considering it in the context of the political situation in Russia, an era permeated by the energies of nihilism and atheism. The article explores the implicit (and sometimes explicit) polemics that Kojève engages in with Dostoyevsky both in Atheism and in his lectures on Hegel. In the latter, he refers to the novel Demons, which accumulates many of the themes already raised in Atheism (as well as in its unfinished avatar, The Life of a Great Sinner).

In the years 1870-1890, nihilism and “nihilists” – the generic name under which all those aspiring to a radical change in the Russian state were included–were the subject of numerous articles in the French press, as well as of “nihilist novels”, of which we present here a significant corpus. The “sham marriage” (fake marriage), popularised by N. Chernyshevsky in favour of the emancipation of women and the revolutionary cause, is one of the inevitable motifs in these novels. We will illustrate this with an example from the populist S. Sinegub in 1872, as told by himself.

The article examines an aspect of the phenomenon that would later be termed nihilism–Russian Voltairianism. Although it no longer has much to do with Voltaire, who advocated tolerance and pioneered the first manifestations of free thought in 18th-century Russia, this term evolved based on a vague perception of Voltaire as someone who challenged established beliefs and moral values. Consequently, it came to signify atheism in its most radical forms, which could even drive the young heroes of the time to commit suicide. The idea that religious indifference leads to moral degeneration is the legacy that 18th-century “Voltairianism” left in Russian culture.

In post-Soviet times, the notion of “legal nihilism” has come to dominate the discourse on the place of law in Russian society. It has been used to denounce the allegedly deficient relationship that various segments of the Russian population have with the law and judicial system. Moreover, its use generally presumes a centuries-old continuity in the negative attitude of Russians towards the law. However, the very history of the notion is little known, let alone questioned. This article traces its origins, showing how “legal nihilism” was first constructed as a political incrimination in the Stalinist ussr. The milieu of Soviet legal scholars was its true incubator, at a time when the interpretation of the Marxian thesis on the withering away of the state and law was fueling lively theoretical conflicts. “Legal nihilism” then served as a pretext for Stalin’s purges of the legal sphere. In the late ussr, when the thesis on the withering away of law had been eventually abandoned, the notion was revived. The time was ripe for the rediscovery of pre-Soviet legal thought and for questions, nourished by comparisons with Western countries, about the existence of a “Russian legal tradition.” While some Russian and foreign sociological works have sought to turn “legal nihilism” into an analytical category, the first two decades of the 21st century show that the notion has remained primarily a polemical tool. Under Putin’s warmongering regime, it has even become a political incrimination once again. The current Russian government uses it to challenge Western countries’ claims that they defend the law and to denounce its opponents as enemies of the state, which is said to be single-handedly “civilising” Russia on a legal level.

The article focuses on the reception and rethinking of “nihilism” in late Soviet culture, especially in the 30 years between Stalin’s death and the beginning of Gorbachev's reforms. On the one hand, the nihilism of the 1860s (especially Pisarev’s) was formally considered a precursor to leftist Marxist ideology. But Soviet censorship was sensitive to possible direct allusions and projections and very carefully blocked attempts to compare critics of tsarist Russia to critics of present-day reality (in Tvardovsky’s Novyj Mir, for example, or in the work of Alexander Yanov). On the other hand, from the mid-1960s onwards, criticism of contemporary “Western nihilism” as an anarchist or left-radical twin of the 1968 protests became increasingly active in the Soviet censored press. As a result, by the early 1980s, there emerged a group of conservatives (though not mainstream) critics (Yuri Davidov, a well-known critic of the Frankfurt School, Alexander Mikhailov, a specialist in German thought, and the literary critic Irina Rodnyanskaya) who considered any radicalism to be “nihilism” and “Nietzscheanism”. The article explores the origins and influences of these ideological currents within Soviet society.

In our contribution, we wonder whether Nicolas Berdiaev’s spiritual existentialism, based on the individual’s expression of a free mystical subjectivity, might not ultimately be a way out of the existential impasse of Russian nihilism, by opposing it with a positive alternative: “alternative” because it is itself founded on the “rejection of the world” here below [“neprijatie mira”] in the name of total human freedom, and “positive” because it does not seem to renounce the fullness of life–a renunciation that nihilism can potentially lead to, through its posture of negation of morality, culture and other broad values, which, according to the philosopher, engenders only “barbarism and savagery” (The Meaning of Creative Act, p. 411). Instead, Berdiaev’s existentialism proposes a “supra-cultural path” through the affirmation of human beings’ spiritual freedom and creative personality.
