N. Ya. Marr was a multifaceted scholar and somewhat enigmatic person, which is perhaps what makes him simultaneously attractive and repellent. The present paper aims to analyse certain aspects of his scientific and personal biography in order to unravel the complexities of both his domestic reception (initially in the Russian Empire and later in the Soviet Union) and abroad. The central idea is that Marr was, in a sense, an active victim of his extremely ambitious character and of the equally aggressive external political circumstances that shaped—and at the same time threatened—overall scientific development in the former multinational empire now governed by the Bolsheviks. To accomplish this, we rely on firsthand and contemporary sources, requiring a critical and thorough analysis “without anger and passion”.

Between 1892 and 1917, N. Marr undertook large-scale archaeological excavations at the deserted city of Ani, former capital of the Armenian kingdom of the Bagratids, in the Caucasus. The First World War and the changes in borders were to dramatically put an end to these excavations, with the looting of lapidary deposits, the destruction of archives and the abandonment of the site. After the Bolshevik revolution, N. Marr was to be the promoter of the Marxist theory of stadial evolution (stadial’nost’), which became official and which he applied to linguistics, archaeology, ethnology and art history, within the State Academy of History of Material Culture (gaimk) of which he was the founder. In 1934, the monograph of the archaeological excavations of the site of Ani was published, led by J. Orbeli. N. Marr wrote a preface which repudiated these results, judging them to be in disagreement with his theory of stadial evolution. This article analyses the excavation campaigns at the Ani site and their results. It also studies the preface written by N. Marr in 1932 in which he tries to justify by self-criticism these pre-revolutionary excavations, at a pivotal moment when the Red Terror was beginning to descend on the Soviet population, and in the first place on its elites.

In the spring of 1928, the Soviet academician Nikolai Marr spent a week in Guingamp, Brittany, in order to become familiar with the Breton language by talking to some of its speakers. He also learned about the social and ideological position of the language by reading a handful of texts produced by leading figures of the particularist movement. He concluded that Breton represented, like the other Celtic languages, an “intermediate stage in the gradual development of the sound language, between the languages of the primitive population of Europe (which belong to the Japhetic system) and those of the Promethean system”. This brief episode allowed him to add a minor piece—of which he had only very elementary knowledge—to his vast new theory.

N. Marr dedicated some fifty papers to the Abkhaz language. They could be divided according to their topics, going from the history and language of the Abkhaz people to the links between Abkhaz and the other Caucasian languages and to the role of abkhazology in the cultural development of this Republic. A lesser-known part of his papers is kept in the archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. The paper explores Marr’s “Abkhaz world”, his contribution to the linguistic discussions of his time and language building in Abkhazia.

The article analyses the role of the Basque language in the research of Soviet linguist Nikolai Marr, as well as his links with the Basque Country. Marr traveled to the French and Spanish Basque Country in the 1920s, being over 50 years old. During his travels Marr had the opportunity to meet renowned bascologists of his time and to learn the language to some extent. Many notes from his third trip are kept in the Archives of the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. The Basque language impacted Marr’s Japhetic theory, although this theory was not recognised by most linguists of his time. However, Marr’s remarks on typological and morphosyntactic features of Basque seem quite interesting.

Nikolai Marr’s activity coincided with a period during which folk studies were thriving in Europe and Russia; to study this theme in Marr’s works, one must start by retracing its European and Russian background in the 19th century, taking into account all its different currents and schools. It is well known that Marr spent his childhood in his native Georgia where popular creation was still quite present and took on a nationalist tinge. Later, as a student and then as a professor at Saint Petersburg University, he kept a keen interest in folklore, composing a series of erudite studies about Caucasian folkloric monuments, taking advantage of his knowledge of Georgian and Armenian and following the philological Russian tradition.A radical change occurred in 1892 when Marr undertook his archeological excavations in the ancient Armenian site of Ani. He became familar with the Armenian language spoken by the people and various other dialects, and became acquainted with the daily life, world vision and folklore of the local population. Nevertheless, for him, folklore was no more than simply an element of popular culture next to material civilization; this corresponds with the universal vision of Marr’s New Theory of language which he developed from the early 1920s. In the same way, he insisted on the necessary hybridisation of folklore productions, that also occurs in the linguistic field. Marr produced very few works on folklore in this last period, as if he preferred to devote himself above all to general linguistics. As a later development of his vision of folklore, we can however look at the works of his former students and followers, such as Yossip Orbeli, Vladimir Propp, Olga Freidenberg and Viktor Zhirmunsky—perhaps Marr’s folkloric legacy could be even more significant than the one he left in the field of linguistics.

Unlike Russian literature, Russian linguistics and philosophy of language—which form a gigantic corpus—are little known in the West. Yet not only do they deserve more than ignorance, they are also, despite constant denial, an integral part of the Western cultural world. This thesis is supported here by a study of the primitive world of linguist Nikolai Marr, whose calamitous reputation masks the teeming intellectual world of a time and place that are fascinating to this day: the Soviet Union of the 1920s-1940s, a distorting mirror of the “Western” world.

The article traces the life and contributions of Evdokia Kozhevnikova-Gugushvili, a little-known Soviet researcher, through her travels and ethnographic work in Svanetia (Soviet Georgia) in the 1920s and 1930s. The influence of linguist Nikolai Marr on her research is also examined. Kozhevnikova’s travels in Svanetia were marked by logistical and linguistic challenges, but were decisive for her understanding of the region and her future work. Despite personal and professional difficulties, Kozhevnikova left a significant legacy, including valuable archives on Svane culture which were rediscovered decades after her death. Her commitment to ethnography and her use of Marr’s theories reflect the intellectual challenges and contexts of the time.

The article examines the influence of the personality and works of academician N. Ya. Marr (the founder of Japhetidology—the Soviet “new doctrine of language”) on sinology in the ussr and then in post-Soviet Russia, as well as on the fate of individual outstanding sinologists (Evgeniy Polivanov and others). Although Marr’s works contained references to the Chinese language, they were unlikely to be systematic. Marr believed that the Chinese language was “amorphous” and, from the defeat of Marrism by Joseph Stalin in 1950 until the end of the 1980s, leading Soviet sinologists argued that Chinese was a “normal language” (and that it should even contain the same categories as in Russian and other inflected languages). However, Marr also had a certain prescience that could possibly be associated with the latest achievements of linguistics, such as the value of the Chinese language as one of the “ideal types” for constructing a typology, four types of languages based on the selection of a topic or subject, predicative topic structures as “innate” and seen as the most universal “elements”.
