This article aims to outline the uses of the motif of earth in several texts that differ in genre and form, yet were all published after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, and were written by women and non-binary authors from Russia and Belarus: the short story collection black forest by tony lashden, the autofictional novel I Wish Ashes Upon My Home by Daria Serenko, the play We Are No Longer by Tatiana Frolova, and the philosophical essay Homeland by Oksana Timofeeva. From an anti-war and (eco)feminist perspective common to all these works, the motif of the earth—widely employed in patriotic discourse—is instead transformed into a tool of resistance against the imperialism of Putin’s Russia. This reinterpretation is achieved through a questioning of gender stereotypes linked with the ambivalence of the image of the earth (associated with birth and death, nourishment and decay), as well as with the polysemy of the term itself (earth as substance, territory, or planet).

The article examines the School of Contemporary Literary Practices, a creative writing training program initiated in Moscow in the early 2020s by, among others, two contemporary Russian authors, Evgenia Nekrasova and Oksana Vasyakina. It analyses the prospects for literary renewal targeted by the project: modernization of the prose language, work on “black spots” in Russian literature (marginalized voices and experiences), and adoption of feminist and decolonial approaches. The article places this initiative in the broader context of alternative projects that emerged in the Russian literary field from the late 2010s to the early 2020s, and discusses the limitations of such a project, particularly in terms of real access for people from minorities to such training (financial selectivity).

This paper deals with the ambivalence of agitprop in contemporary feminist circus. Agitprop is defined here aesthetically and politically as a form inherited from the historical practice and theatre theory of Piscator. By comparing Contra by Laura Murphy and Les Petits Bonnets by Pascaline Herveet we demonstrate that the political meaning of agitprop and its effects on the audience are quite different in each one of these recent feminist productions. As a form directly recycled for being performative and efficient, it can produce a typical thetic postmodernist art (Contra). As a form which is distanced and dialogically related to other forms and devices such as fiction, it can nourish a contemporary political feminist and queer circus (Les Petits Bonnets).
