This paper considers concrete performances by an agitprop troupe during the Spanish Civil War, called Altavoz del Frente. It emphasises the multidisciplinary approach of this group, which used all sorts of propaganda tools (theatre, movies, political speeches, poetry recitals, exhibitions…), and scrutinises the variety of its drama poetics. The paper explores two more theoretical questions related to agitprop art. First, agitprop as a place to experiment at the junction of different arts; secondly, the paradoxical nature of agitprop theatrical fiction, which calls for the destruction of boundaries between art and life, while using a wide range of theatrical forms.

This article explores the status of poetry in two poems by Maria Stepanova. On the one hand, the poem “The War of Beasts and Animals” (2015) shows that war shatters the language system, absorbing humans into the unrepresentable; on the other hand, the poem “The Body Returns” (2018) demonstrates the life-giving power of poetic speech, capable of recreating an ethical and poetic system that restores the bond between people and between cultures.

Press articles and numerous interviews reveal the daily life of Dmitry Merezhkovsky, his political opinions and his activities under the German occupation, as well as his network of acquaintances in Biarritz in 1940-1941. They shed light on the genesis of the writer’s latest works, The Mystery of the Russian Revolution and Europe Facing the USSR, the link between his lectures in the summer of 1941, his posthumous article “Bolshevism and Humanity”, and a speech allegedly given on the radio. The war confirmed his predictions of the 1920s and 1930s, prompting journalists to present him as a prophet. The reception of his works and speeches proves that at the end of his life Dmitry Merezhkovsky enjoyed a reputation as a great mystical and political author. The press, under German control, used his anti-Bolshevik writings to justify the war against the USSR.
