In his mid-length film The Revolutionary (1917), which situates the political events of the time in a family setting, Yevgeni Bauer broaches the question of filiation, as does Turgenev in Fathers and Sons or Dostoyevsky in Demons. The famous Russian filmmaker, who signed his final film here after a career essentially devoted to «salon» melodrama, revisits the connection made by the writers of the second half of the 19th century between family and politics, the father/son relationship being one of the paradigms of the struggle taking place within the Russian intelligentsia between liberal and radical social forces (in the film, the father is socialist-revolutionary and the son a Bolshevik sympathizer). Shot and made in the spring of 1917, before the Bolshevik uprising, The Revolutionary constitutes a precious document in that it exposes the conflicts that accompanied Russia's entry into modernity and the Revolution: generational conflicts, socio-political conflicts, but also aesthetic conflicts, of which cinema – to become the art of Soviet modernity par excellence – was a prime indicator.

In the Histories of Russian Literature, the 19th century is generally regarded as the “Golden Century”, i.e. the moment of crystallisation of national myths and standardisation of texts and the national language, which most written cultures experience under various names: “Great Century”, “Classical Era”, “Century of National Revival”, etc. This terminology raises a whole series of questions to which this article attempts to provide some answers: what is the relevance of periodisation in centuries for literary history and to what regime of historicity does our representation of phenomena in Russian literature correspond? How can the symbolic weight of the Russian “Golden Century” (zolotoj vek) be re-evaluated today, according to what parameters and with what tools?

Since the end of the 19th century, histories of Russian literature have usually been written from an ethnocentric, anthological and hagiographic point of view, which have excluded de facto so-called “minor” authors – first and foremost women, natives of the Russian Empire who didn’t write in Russian and non-Russian speaking writers. Russian literary canon, which developed on the basis of “Russian Classics” (russkaja klassika), has never seriously been questionned, despite the deconstructive efforts of the sociologists of Russian literature (Reiblat, Dubin, Gudkov) during 1990s and 2000s.This article deals with the question of the constructive and deconstructive dynamics of Russian Classics, the ways of they have been transmited, the national, social and patrimonial values they convey. What position do the Russian Classics occupy in the literary and cultural landscape today? Is it not time for the textbooks and the histories of Russian literature to reject vertical, exclusive, overlooking and institutionalized approaches, in order to answer other questions, which also constitute Russian literature: discontinuity, profusion, complexity and multiplicity of situations, transfer of cultures and languages, hybridization.

The present paper will examine the notion of “cinematographic skaz” (kinoskaz) related to the study of different strategies that enable the transposition of the oral indirect speech into Soviet silent movies. According to the works of Russian Formalists on the differentiation between literary and cinematographic languages, the purpose of this paper is to show how gesture replaces orality in another system of perception (for example in The Undercoat (1926), Grigori Konzintsev's and Leonid Trauberg's film that utilises Nikolai Gogol’s skaz). The reflection on the aesthetical and formal conflict between literary and cinematographic skaz can be also extended to the study of performance, including balagan or Yiddish and Ukrainian popular theatre (from which Russian cinema partly derives from), mimodrama (The Undercoat by Marcel Marceau) and contemporary monodrama (How I ate a dog by Evgeny Grishkovets).

Only in exile did Sergei Dovlatov acquire the status of a recognised writer. There he took on an autobiographical position characteristic of the Russian émigré since Alexander Herzen. Thus he tends to underline the cognitive and cathartic functions of literature in a broad attempt to explain as much for himself as for the rest of the world. In the cycle of stories called « The Suitcase » Dovlatov assumes the universal aim of the story-teller: a memorial and trangenerational transmission. The suitcase, an item which fully takes part in the mythology of exile, serves to convey the past to the present, the familiar to the alien, the Soviet Union to the United States of America. The aim of the stylistic and narrative artifacts used in «The Suitcase» is to eliminate the break between «before» (object of narration) and «after» (the moment of narration) and to ensure consequently the chain of transmission or, in the words of Walter Benjamin, «the epic chain of memory». Trad. en russe : Irina Kantarbaeva-Bill
