The article examines the reception of Russian modernist poetry in Finland and its translations with a concentration on the immediate post-revolutionary publications. Both Finnish and Swedish translations and reception are discussed. General opinion as well as earlier research maintains that Russian modernist literature was practically unknown in Finland during the first decades of the twentieth century, owing to the anti-Russian and anti-Soviet political atmosphere. However, there were several minority figures, such as Antti Tiittanen, Rafael Lindqvist, Henry Parland and Elmer Diktonius, who were involved in translating and discussing Russian literature in the press.

Dmitry Merezhkovsky occupies an ambiguous place in the history of Russian and transnational modernism. While numerous contemporary foes of modernism drew attention to the writer’s role in importing into Russia the ideas and concepts associated with “new art” and “new sensibility”, many Russian advocates of these ideas ended up refusing Merezhkovsky his rightful place in modernism. The present article examines Merezhkovsky’s position in the Russian and European fields of cultural production as illustrative of the taxonomical difficulties dogging modernist studies. It analyses Merezhkovsky’s case in the larger context of modernist historiography with an eye on the following problems: the borderlines between Russia’s minority cultures, particularly those of the intelligentsia and modernism; the center and the periphery of Russian modernist culture in its different historical periods; modernist strategies for engaging with market economy culture and political authority.
