Dmitry Merezhkovsky, who escaped from Russia in December 1919, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who was expelled from the USSR in February 1974, both sent warning signs to the West, denounced its blindness and called for a moral awakening. For the two writer-publicists, communist ideology was absolute Evil, against which they called on Westerners to resist morally and spiritually (Merezhkovsky and Solzhenitsyn) or militarily (Merezhkovsky), placing ethics above economic or political considerations. A book by Wladimir Drabovich, a Russian psychologist living in France, Fragility of Liberty and Seduction of Dictatorships (1934) helps to understand, in terms of social psychology, the ideological blindness deplored by Merezhkovsky as well as by Solzhenitsyn.

Press articles and numerous interviews reveal the daily life of Dmitry Merezhkovsky, his political opinions and his activities under the German occupation, as well as his network of acquaintances in Biarritz in 1940-1941. They shed light on the genesis of the writer’s latest works, The Mystery of the Russian Revolution and Europe Facing the USSR, the link between his lectures in the summer of 1941, his posthumous article “Bolshevism and Humanity”, and a speech allegedly given on the radio. The war confirmed his predictions of the 1920s and 1930s, prompting journalists to present him as a prophet. The reception of his works and speeches proves that at the end of his life Dmitry Merezhkovsky enjoyed a reputation as a great mystical and political author. The press, under German control, used his anti-Bolshevik writings to justify the war against the USSR.

The article is devoted to the Green Lamp, a circle created in 1927 in Paris on the initiative of the Merezhkovsky couple. The first part describes how the meetings were held, lists the attendees and analyses the topics that were discussed over the thirteen-year existence of the circle. The second part deals with the debates that took place on the state of the Russian emigration, on personal freedom and on how to go on writing while abroad. Studying the activities of the Green Lamp allows us to appreciate the role played by the Merezhkovskys in exile.

The present essay investigates the European reception of D. Merezhkovsky’s Tolstoy and Dostoevsky through the example of Thomas Mann’s Goethe and Tolstoy. In this book published in 1925, Mann elaborates a strong parallel between Goethe and Tolstoy, which seems at first sight to draw him far away from Merezhkovsky. Eventually though, not only does Mann’s text demonstrate that its author is putting into practice the lessons of the Russian critic, but in general the whole reception of Merezhkovsky’s book fosters a better comprehension of the new and original way in which Merezhkovsky builds his own comparison.

In 1907, the religious situation attracted the attention of the editors of the Mercure de France. They launched an international survey and collected responses to the following question: “Are we witnessing a dissolution or an evolution of the religious idea and feeling?” The philosophical and religious ideas of Merezhkovsky and Minsky also attracted the attention of the editors of the Mercure de France. In response, Merezhkovsky developed his ideas of a “New religious consciousness”, whereas Minsky advocated his unique religion, meonism. This article explains the reasons for the collaboration between the Mercure de France and the Merezhkovsky-Minsky duo in this context. In addition, it elucidates the difference between Minsky’s core ideas and those of Merezhkovsky.

Western criticism has often compared Merezhkovsky’s historical and biographical writing with the archaeology of Georg Ebers, the aesthetic stylization of Flaubert (as the author of Salammbô) and the universals of Hippolyte Taine. At the same time, the nature of the impressive similarity between the biographies of Napoleon created by Léon Bloy and Merezhkovsky remains an open question, since there is indirect evidence, yet to be verified, that would indicate there was an influence of the Russian writer’s early texts on the French author. It is important to correlate Merezhkovsky’s biographical works with the right-wing religious traditionalist line of this genre, which was deliberately stigmatized and discredited by the cultural axiology that prevailed after the Second World War. The article pays special attention to the books Dante and Napoleon. It emphasizes that in the former, Merezhkovsky acts as a compiler who brought together in a single volume a compendium of the commonplaces found in Russian Dantean studies of the “Silver Age”. In the latter, the total sacralization of the worldview finds typological correspondence, on the one hand, with “Catholic renewal” literature, and, on the other, with auto-hagiographical works of the Russian Old Believer tradition.

Remy de Gourmont’s personality and works attracted significant attention from Russian modernists. His Book of Masks (1896) had a certain impact on the emergence and development of a new form of literary criticism in Russia. Yet this does not apply to Dmitry Merezhkovsky, author of the famed Eternal Companions (1896). A typological link can be traced between The Book of Masks and Eternal Companions, based on processes found both in Russian and French late 19th century literature. New approaches for the evaluation of literary phenomena appeared above all in the subjective selection of names to be examined, dictated by the critic’s ego, favouring one’s personal interpretation rather than the scientific method, and establishing one’s personal literary hierarchy.

Dmitry Merezhkovsky occupies an ambiguous place in the history of Russian and transnational modernism. While numerous contemporary foes of modernism drew attention to the writer’s role in importing into Russia the ideas and concepts associated with “new art” and “new sensibility”, many Russian advocates of these ideas ended up refusing Merezhkovsky his rightful place in modernism. The present article examines Merezhkovsky’s position in the Russian and European fields of cultural production as illustrative of the taxonomical difficulties dogging modernist studies. It analyses Merezhkovsky’s case in the larger context of modernist historiography with an eye on the following problems: the borderlines between Russia’s minority cultures, particularly those of the intelligentsia and modernism; the center and the periphery of Russian modernist culture in its different historical periods; modernist strategies for engaging with market economy culture and political authority.

This paper analyses the image of Saint Therese of Lisieux in Merezhkovsky’s essay and in the poems of Zinaida Gippius. Merezhkovsky’s essay Little Therese is a meditation on holiness and an interpretation of the life of Saint Therese as a sign of the advent of the Kingdom of the Spirit, whereas in the poems of Zinaida Gippius, Therese is either an image of the Eternal Feminine, or the poet’s privileged interlocutor, or the symbol of the aesthetic and ethical simplicity that Gippius strived for.

« L’Europe-Sodome » ?

In the context of a general interest in Proust among the Russian emigration which became evident during the encounters of the French-Russian studio and from the first translations of In Search of Lost Time by Boris Schloezer and Galina Kuznetsova, the approach of Dmitry Merezhkovsky was very specific. In a few citations from his monumental Mystery of the West: Atlantis-Europe (English edition title: Atlantis/Europe: The Secret of the West), in the chapter “Europe-Sodom”, he cursed Europe as a place where abided all the sins of humanity, as well as Proust himself: “the writer also dwells in Sodom, and even if he has been ‘exempt from the fire from above’, it was only partly, he was severely burnt, half-dead”. Still, despite this severe diagnosis and the condemning tone of a prophet, it is thanks to Proust that both Merezhkovsky and Gippius found the means to reconcile these oppositions, to approach ‘the mystery of the third sex’ which they tried to resolve in terms of a “tripartite union” with Dmitry Filosofov; finally to indicate to the perishing world both in the West and in the East that its resurrection was still possible.
