Andrei Rublev (14th-15th centuries), the most famous of Russian iconographers, appears shrouded in mystery in the film Tarkovsky devoted to him in 1966. But does Andrei Rublev truly follow a hagiographic approach? By drawing a parallel between Tarkovsky’s work and the medieval genre of hagiography, this article seeks to analyse the mechanisms that contribute to this impression. However, this hagiographic element consists in loose resonances and primarily serves an aesthetic purpose, superficially recreating a medieval atmosphere. A key feature of the Lives of the Saints is the distinction between centre and periphery, which helps confer an exceptional status on the protagonist. This pattern, partially reproduced in the film, is not so much a way of portraying Andrei as a saint than as a genius – rather unsurprisingly given the film’s historical context. Yet, while Soviet historiography strictly contrasted these two notions of saint and genius (as evidenced by the biographies of Rublev written during Tarkovsky’s time), the filmmaker tended to reconcile them. He borrowed the language of hagiography to speak of an artist and, conversely, used the figure of the artist to evoke the transcendent.

This article offers a new reading of two poems by Nikolai Gumilev which puts them into the framework of an extensive cultural transfer: the transfer of both the European Pre-Raphaelite movement and the Ruskinian discourse into the Russian cultural horizon. The poem “Fra Angelico” then seems to be a Russian recreation of an esthete’s discourse upon Italian primitives, and the poem “Andrei Rublev,” which constitutes the other part of an imaginary diptych, defines the aesthetics of Russian Primitivism. Beyond this, the present article demonstrates that such a form of Primitivism is not unrelated to the poet’s affinity for Adamism.
