The interaction processes between civilizations, which have become one of the major tendencies in the world’s cultural history, are an objective reality for the evolution of culture and philosophy in Russia. Relations of Russia with the people-neighbors on its east and southern boundaries, and relations of Russia with the Eastern countries, total more than a thousand years. Numerous peoples, with various religions, cultures, opinions, traditions, continued to develop within the limits of the Russian state. Some mechanisms of interaction between the three more important religions of Russia - Christianity, Islam and Buddhism - were developed during the last centuries. On the other hand, “answers” of Russia to West and East “calls” have defined a number of factors favorable to the cultural development of the country and to the evolution of intercultural relations. For the Russian philosophers it was important to resolve the contradictions between rationalism and the Russian “spiritual vision”. About “integral synthetic life”, wrote V. S. Solovyov; about the “great synthesis” of the cultures of Russia, the West and the East, spoke N. F. Fyodorov, G. V. Florovsky, G. P. Fedotov. Further reference points for studying the place of Russia in a world history appeared in the context of a new cultural comparativism. Today, comparative methodologies as they have been taken up and reworked by Russian philosophers and thinkers give the possibility to transform comparativism into a real tool of intercultural dialogue.

The subject of this chapter is an examination of the infrequently analyzed connection between the world view of the Swedish theologist and mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg and the founder of the Russian philosophy of All-Unity, Vladimir Solovyov. The similarities between their teachings find their origin in the gnostic and religious nature of Swedenborg’s and Solovyov’s soothsayings. Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) had a universal mind and a multifaceted education. Vladimir Solovyov lived in the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th centuries, at the time of the crisis of European culture. His studies reflected an apprehensive tension in anticipation of the disasters that were about to rift humanity apart, as well as a passionate urge to prevent that tendency. Vladimir Solovyov was not a follower of Swedenborg’s worldview, but he continued his line of reasoning in the convergence of Man and the Divine. His idea of Divine Humanity develops Swedenborg’s teachings on the possibility of the salvation of Humanity. And his theory of All-Unity brilliantly concludes Swedenborg’s insights on the transcendence of Man to Godhood.
