Dmitri Chizhevsky (1894-1977), a prominent twentieth-century Slavicist and philosopher, left a body of reflective work expressing his attitude towards the ideas of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school, particularly towards the writings of Yuri Lotman (1922- 1993). This article explores this attitude on three levels: (1) by juxtaposing the structuralism of the Moscow-Tartu school with the ideas of reception aesthetics, embraced by Chizhevsky; (2) by conducting a typological comparison between Lotman’s and Chizhevsky’s literary criticism; and (3) by analysing Chizhevsky’s reviews of Lotman’s books. The article considers separately the status of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school as a phenomenon of Soviet culture.

Structuralism in France and the USSR was rarely concerned with the history of social concepts, for it was lacking a reference system which might only be constituted by non-semiotic, social and institutional facts. Two essays by Yuri Lotman on the medieval Russian opposition honor/glory are an exception, allowing to make some conclusions about the method of structural history of concepts. In particular, Lotman discovered the unequal semiotic (conventional) character of historical concepts, determining the possibilities of evolution and transformation of their oppositions.

The article illustrates the explicit and implicit correlations between general notions of Russian formalism and its latest subversions in Lectures on Structuralist Poetics by Yuri Lotman. Declared as a manifesto of new approaches to literary structure (above all, verse), Lotman’s work contains a lot of conceptual revisions of formalism, at the same time presenting itself as its successful overcoming. The strong demand to negate all predecessors was canonized by the formalists themselves and, as it is seen in Lotman’s arguments, remained actual for further philological generations.

Balachova, V.M. Jirmounski, V.V. Kojinov, D.S. Likhatchov, А.А. Nouïkine, L.I. This publication analyses the peer reviews of Yuri Lotman’s article, “Structuralism in literary studies”, which was commissioned to him by the Concise Literary Encyclopaedia. Two versions of Lotman’s article were composed in 1967 and 1972. The reviews were written by T.V. Balashova, V.V. Kozhinov, D.S. Likhachev, A.A. Nuikin, L.I. Timofeev, D.M. Urnov, and V.M. Zhirmunsky. Although Lotman revised the article on the basis of their comments, the article was censored and rejected.
