This article examines the readings of races produced in Russia in the last third of the 19th century. It studies the reception of Darwinism and the debates that it has raised as much among liberals, who did not accept the idea of the struggle for survival, as among conservatives, whose anti-Darwinism was often in keeping with anti-Westernism. By insisting on ideas of selection and chance, Darwin managed to disrupt the dominant organicist schemas in which the discourses on the nation were rooted. Ideological articulations between evolutionism, race and national identity thus came to be reconfigured. The argument concerning race as physiologic materialization of differences between human beings has had little impact in Russia. However, as evoked by the interpretations of Darwin studied here, the idea that the nation is a heritage, more psychical than physical, of which each individual is a legatee, remains very widespread.

The discourse on Russian identity has not analyzed in the same way the different spaces inside the country, especially its imperial borders. Since the 19th century, the Slavophile movements, in the general sense of the word (the Slavophiles of the 40's and the different movements which have followed until the turn of the century) had a European vision of India and Buddhism: the reference to buddhism was mainly seen as an opportunity to elaborate a discourse on oneself and to justify the Russian imperial expansion in the Far East.
