Among the various attempts to represent prehistory at the turn of the 20th century, the work of Russian painter, archaeologist and writer Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) is perhaps the one which went furthest in the attempt to reach the deep past of humanity through art. This attempt is doubly inscribed in the late 19th century Russian Slavophil and Populist movement, and in a mystics of origins, which draws from the Neolithic and Bronze Age of Russia a mythology of the “Stone Age”, in which art, folklore and the identity of the Slavic peoples would be rooted.Under the influence of art critic and scholar Vladimir Stassov, Roerich’s early painted work joins Russian artistic trends which translate art’s aspirations to the renewal of its academic norms by exploring the depths of time and popular cultures. It also bears the influence of French artists, primitivists like Derain, Gauguin and Matisse, and symbolists such as Puvis de Chavannes and Odilon Redon. Finally it joins the movement of prehistoric painting, initiated in French by Paul Jamin and Fernand Cormon and in Russia by Viktor Vasnetsov. From these multiple sources, Roerich developed a personal style that participated in the aesthetical revolutions of the turn of the century, but manifested its singular character, both through its formal choices and themes, and by assigning to archeology, namely prehistoric archeology, an ideological and cultural role in its own right.Roerich’s work on the argument, stage settings and costumes for the ballet The Rite of Spring (first performed in Paris on May 29th, 1913) extends these aesthetic and ideological choices. The libretto's argument, the painted decors and the costumes, combined with Stravinsky's iconoclastic music also rooted in popular Russian themes, and Nijinsky's daring choreography, exalt in a total spectacle and ritual performance the celebration of the “Stone Age” mingled with the origin of the Slavic peoples.

While the “primitive” inspiration in Russian avant-garde art seems to be acknowledged and well studied, the archaic tendencies found in Mikhail Vrubel’s art remain outside the field of art history. The present article aims to show how Mikhail Vrubel adopted the pictorial language of Byzantine art and transcribed it into his own works. By considering the interest in “Primitivisms”—including Byzantine art—within the historical and cultural contexts of the early 20th century, and by analyzing the pictorial techniques of Byzantine religious art and those of Mikhail Vrubel’s works, this study sheds light on how the dialogue between ancient and modern art was created.

This article explores the “Russian” vein of Primitivism in France and Switzerland through texts by Blaise Cendrars, Jean Cocteau, Charles Ferdinand Ramuz and Jacques Rivière. While “Primitivism” is usually associated with visual arts, it is in musical models that these authors found exemplary artistic approaches in the 1910s. Far from Rimsky-Korsakov’s “exoticism,” they found inspiration in the compositions by The Five, and then in Igor Stravinsky’s works. This article thus shows the ways in which these writers promoted Russian compositions and how they “primitivized” them in their own words and imaginations in return. “Primitivism” thus appears to be a matter of discourse above all.

The publication of N. A. Klyuev’s poetry collection, Sosen This article focuses on the work of Velimir Khlebnikov—perhaps the most influential poet in Russian Modernism and Primitivism—, who attempted to broker a rapprochement between twin utopian urges: one toward an idealized primitive past, and the other toward an idealized technological future. What enabled Khlebnikov to do so is the pastoral mode—a mode that typically celebrates simple rural life and contrasts with the values of city life, and thus with development and modernization. The fact that Khlebnikov resorted to this mode in the wake of the Revolution and envisioned the restoration of the pastoral by technology itself shows that he is a representative of a post-Revolutionary thinking. This complicates the story of an overriding zeal toward modernization, and it shows how, throughout his career, Khlebnikov consistently tackled the issues of the primitive and the pastoral, seen as competing civilizational values.

The publication of N. A. Klyuev’s poetry collection, Sosen Perezvon (The Chime of Pines), in 1911 — Klyuev, whose first literary works appeared in the pages of almanacs for poets “from the people”—, epitomized the poetic carreer of a “Peasant poet” and the beginning of the artistic path of a “folk poet” (narodny poet) whose poetic identity reflected the aspirations of an intelligentsia striving to embrace the folk origins of Russian culture at the dawn of the 20th century. Seen as a “primitive object” in the early-1910s poetry scene of St. Petersburg and Moscow, Klyuev relied on his own originality while imitating the literary posture of Alexei Koltsov — the first “Peasant poet” in Russian literature —, in order to create his own creative credo. The poet defended his difference from both the tradition of 19th-century Peasant poetry and such dominant movements as Symbolism and Acmeism, despite the fact that he himself was heir to these traditions. By creating his own primitive identity, Klyuev became a “Barbarian” in the literary context of the 1910s, which lead to a questioning of established hierarchies and ultimately paved the way for the emergence of a national genius.

Russian Primitivism was not only drawn towards the East, but it was also inspired by a number of American primitivist writers. The “primitive” was a notion of prime interest for cultures that shared an anxiety of national identity and were eager to discover their own origins as well as to gain independence from the classical European standards of representation. Both Henry Longfellow’s Primitivism—representative of the 19th century, fetishizing the idea of an original and popular epos—and Walt Whitman’s modern, future-oriented, version of it, have provided fertile grounds for commentaries, debates and creation. Longfellow’s Primitivism was mostly integrated into the tradition of the Russian tale (skazka), while Whitman’s was seen as more disruptive: its reception fostered poetic creation and contributed to bringing together the notions of Primitivism, democracy and political revolution.

Boris Grigoriev—a Russian “World of Art” artist who gained a world-wide reputation as a painter through emigration—and Ivan Bunin—laureate of the Pushkin prize in Russia and a Nobel-prize winner in Europe—, though they were not in direct contact with each other, were engaged in a cultural dialogue in a language they both knew well: that of the revival of “Primitivism” in the culture of the Russian Silver Age. Grigoriev, inspired by the art of the Orthodox icon and Flemish Primitives, constructed his pictures on the principle of the “reverse perspective” elaborated by Pavel Florensky. Bunin transposed some of the techniques of primitive painters into his elliptic writing, which was inspired by the lubok, proverbs, and folk songs. The characters depicted by both artists encapsulate an “Essence of Being.” The artists thus analyze a relatively recent, tragic past and broaden their reflection, from the Faces of Russia to the Faces of the world, in accordance both with the titles of Grigoriev’s monumental panels and the logic of Bunin’s work.

This paper focuses on life stories of a few major Primitivist painters, during the most intense phase of Russian Primitivism in 1913: Natalia Goncharova, the brothers David and Wladimir Burliuk, Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky. The corpus studied here puts together texts written by poets who actively participated in devising Primitivism (Iliazd, Benedikt Livshits), as well as by authors who did not (Marina Tsvetaeva). It includes Kandinsky’s and Malevich’s autobiographies. This is yet another specificity of Russian Primitivism: these painters told their own stories themselves, unlike the artists living in France. These different texts tried to give substance to the fiction of the primitive in all its different guises and modes. The painters’ experiences could thus intermittently coincide with those of the peasant, the prehistoric man, the madman, the child, the savage, the barbarian, and the monk. Primitive artists did not only use primitive artifacts as starting points for their own work, they also aspired to lead a primitive life and to come to terms with what modernism had lost. The primitive thus became an existential category.
