Historical figures such as Ivan the Terrible, Rasputin, Stalin, and even Vladimir Putin, very far from being models of holiness, are now the subject of attempts for their canonisation on the part of political-religious fundamentalist groups, but also, for Stalin, from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, which has annexed orthodoxy to its ideology. Icons of all these pseudo-Saints are for sale in certain churches and on the Internet. The belief in a Russophobic conspiracy is used to reject the criticisms aimed at these figures. The condemnation by the Russian Orthodox Church of these wild canonisations remains without effect and speaks of a certain stupefaction of society.

In the years 1870-1890, nihilism and “nihilists” – the generic name under which all those aspiring to a radical change in the Russian state were included–were the subject of numerous articles in the French press, as well as of “nihilist novels”, of which we present here a significant corpus. The “sham marriage” (fake marriage), popularised by N. Chernyshevsky in favour of the emancipation of women and the revolutionary cause, is one of the inevitable motifs in these novels. We will illustrate this with an example from the populist S. Sinegub in 1872, as told by himself.

Dmitry Merezhkovsky, who escaped from Russia in December 1919, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who was expelled from the USSR in February 1974, both sent warning signs to the West, denounced its blindness and called for a moral awakening. For the two writer-publicists, communist ideology was absolute Evil, against which they called on Westerners to resist morally and spiritually (Merezhkovsky and Solzhenitsyn) or militarily (Merezhkovsky), placing ethics above economic or political considerations. A book by Wladimir Drabovich, a Russian psychologist living in France, Fragility of Liberty and Seduction of Dictatorships (1934) helps to understand, in terms of social psychology, the ideological blindness deplored by Merezhkovsky as well as by Solzhenitsyn.

The bi-weekly The Messenger of Europe (Vestnik Evropy) founded in 1802 by Karamzin, who published works in verse or prose, articles in literary history or literary theory, scientific articles, history articles, partly translated from foreign sources, has the reputation of becoming «pedantic» and conservative under the direction of Mikhail Kachenovski (1805-1830). Although in 1817 the journal is still in the tradition of Russian neo-classicism of the eighteenth century (with edifying tales, translations of the classics of Greek and Roman antiquity, articles of poetic taken from Marmontel and Batteux, anecdotes), he venerates however Zhukovski, criticizes the tragedies of Ozerov and Sumarokov, opens to Hebrew literature, point out the new novels of Mme de Genlis, publish Mme de Staël, an extract of the Universal catechism of the marquis de Saint-Lambert, denounces the rigmarole of German philosophy (Kant, Schelling). In the historical field he publishes the Campaign Notes (1812) of Ivan Lazhechnikov, he is interested in relations between the State and the Catholic Church in the different European countries, wants the abolition of the black slave trade, celebrates the death of Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, appreciates the situation of France under Louis XVIII. Journal of Muscovite teachers and amateurs, Vestnik Evropy occupies a middle place between the «Ancients» and the «Moderns», between the cosmopolitism and the pre-Slavophile identity claim.

In 1813, the accounts of «eye-witnesses» about «The occupation of Moscow by the French» were printed in a series of editions of the Conservateur impartial, a magazine published in French by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in St. Petersburg. That same year it was published in Russian in Vestnik Evropy. In 1835, large extracts from the same accounts were presented (with and without quotation marks) in Armand Domergue’s book Russia during the imperial wars (1805-1815). He was the former manager of the Imperial theatre in Moscow and attributed them to a «Russian lord». In 1871, Description by Moscow inhabitants of the stay of the French in Moscow and of the fire of this city, attributed, on the basis of S. S. Uvarov’s remark to French chevalier d’Ysard de Villefort, was published in Brussels. A Russian translation had already been published in 1869 in Russkij arxiv. We assert that these three publications, independent from one another, are the works of one author, most likely – a «Russian Frenchman». В 1813 г.

Having studied and taught at the University of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Pecherine (1807-1885) emigrated in 1836. After having “fled Russia as one flees a doomed city”, he lived from hand to mouth. Quickly disenchanted with France, he went through every possible philosophical system until, by chance, he heard at Liege a preacher relate the life of the founder of the Redemptorists, Alphonse-Marie de Ligouri (1696-1787), who had left everything in order to consecrate himself to the conversion of countryside people. Seeing in Catholicism the possibility of realizing his socialist utopia of earthly paradise, Pecherine “crossed the Rubicon”, converted in 1840, entered the Redemptorist order in 1841, and was ordained a priest the same year. He became a renowned preacher in England (1845-1854), where A. Herzen came to see him. Deprived of his nationality in 1847 because of his conversion to Catholicism, he went to Ireland. But in 1861, after a stay in Rome where he was troubled by intrigues and ambitions, he left his order which he found insufficiently removed from the world. He served until his death as chaplain in a Dublin hospital, apparently not believing in anything any longer.

After reminding the readers of the legislation about religions in the Russian Empire, as well as manifestoes and ukases of 1903-1905 which end with the granting of freedom of conscience, the article presents the missions of the Orthodox Church towards sects and old believers through five missionary congresses from 1887 to 1910 and a Vade mecum of the missionary (1902). The study of the inner mission is a good observation post of the position of the Orthodox Church regarding the State, and the antagonists trends which appear within after the manifesto of October 17th, 1905. Trad.
