After about ten years in exile, once settled in Paris, the great Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938) published an autobiographical essay titled in Russian Mask and Soul (Man and Mask in English). In it he talked about his art, his major roles (Boris Godunov, Ivan the Terrible, Mephistopheles, Salieri…) and developed at length the question of the artistic decline of his country after the Russian Revolution and the rise of Bolshevism. He explained why he had decided to leave his country in 1922. While Chaliapin has been called a revolutionary, a Bolshevik or even a monarchist, in this book he asserted his political independence. Over the course of the book, the reader easily perceives how much the great singer loved his country and how painful his exile was, despite his triumphs on international stages.

The Family Chronicle (1856) is one of Sergei Aksakov’s autobiographical works. The author narrates the settling of the narrator’s grandfather, Sergei Bagrov, in the province of Orenburg, and then his parents’ wedding. Reporting the times before his own birth, the narrator—and probably the author with him—tries to over-come the gap between the old and the new worlds in order to pave the way for a certain modernity. This article tries to account for this dynamics by focusing first on the representation of the colonization of the province of Orenburg, then on the mythical times of origins, and finally on the primitive dimension of Aksakov’s poetics.

This paper focuses on life stories of a few major Primitivist painters, during the most intense phase of Russian Primitivism in 1913: Natalia Goncharova, the brothers David and Wladimir Burliuk, Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky. The corpus studied here puts together texts written by poets who actively participated in devising Primitivism (Iliazd, Benedikt Livshits), as well as by authors who did not (Marina Tsvetaeva). It includes Kandinsky’s and Malevich’s autobiographies. This is yet another specificity of Russian Primitivism: these painters told their own stories themselves, unlike the artists living in France. These different texts tried to give substance to the fiction of the primitive in all its different guises and modes. The painters’ experiences could thus intermittently coincide with those of the peasant, the prehistoric man, the madman, the child, the savage, the barbarian, and the monk. Primitive artists did not only use primitive artifacts as starting points for their own work, they also aspired to lead a primitive life and to come to terms with what modernism had lost. The primitive thus became an existential category.
