In the early 1920s, Nicolas Roerich (1874–1947) painted a whole series of works inspired by the life of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. In the early 1930s, the artist increasingly associated his name with the founder of the Trinity Monastery, using for this purpose a portrait of the saint that he painted in 1932 and which, in fact, turned out to be a hidden self-portrait. Studying how the artist presented himself within Russian émigré circles as a reincarnation of Saint Sergius provides an opportunity to examine the guru-like status he claimed during his lifetime and to grasp certain distinctive features of Agni Yoga, the New Religious Movement he founded together with his wife, Helena Roerich. In present-day Russia, despite the government’s hostility toward minority religious groups, Nicolas Roerich—whose name remains linked to Saint Sergius—continues to enjoy a surprising aura. Attempting to understand this phenomenon raises the question of the persistence of new religiosities in Russia (and in other countries) and how they challenge the notion of sainthood.

Among the various attempts to represent prehistory at the turn of the 20th century, the work of Russian painter, archaeologist and writer Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) is perhaps the one which went furthest in the attempt to reach the deep past of humanity through art. This attempt is doubly inscribed in the late 19th century Russian Slavophil and Populist movement, and in a mystics of origins, which draws from the Neolithic and Bronze Age of Russia a mythology of the “Stone Age”, in which art, folklore and the identity of the Slavic peoples would be rooted.Under the influence of art critic and scholar Vladimir Stassov, Roerich’s early painted work joins Russian artistic trends which translate art’s aspirations to the renewal of its academic norms by exploring the depths of time and popular cultures. It also bears the influence of French artists, primitivists like Derain, Gauguin and Matisse, and symbolists such as Puvis de Chavannes and Odilon Redon. Finally it joins the movement of prehistoric painting, initiated in French by Paul Jamin and Fernand Cormon and in Russia by Viktor Vasnetsov. From these multiple sources, Roerich developed a personal style that participated in the aesthetical revolutions of the turn of the century, but manifested its singular character, both through its formal choices and themes, and by assigning to archeology, namely prehistoric archeology, an ideological and cultural role in its own right.Roerich’s work on the argument, stage settings and costumes for the ballet The Rite of Spring (first performed in Paris on May 29th, 1913) extends these aesthetic and ideological choices. The libretto's argument, the painted decors and the costumes, combined with Stravinsky's iconoclastic music also rooted in popular Russian themes, and Nijinsky's daring choreography, exalt in a total spectacle and ritual performance the celebration of the “Stone Age” mingled with the origin of the Slavic peoples.

Pourquoi s’intéresser à Nicolas Roerich ? (Ouverture)

To introduce Nicholas Roerich to whoever knows hardly anything about him is a real challenge. Any researcher interested in this painter, decorator, teacher, poet, writer, archaeologist, traveler, mystic, theosophist who founded with his wife Elena a New Religious Movement, the Agni Yoga, needs a huge amount of skills to deal with such different fields as arts, archeology, history, esotericism, religious studies, and even psychopathology… The fact that Roerich’s personality and work have been the subject of divergent assessments adds to the difficulty. Hence our choice to open this collection of papers with a long introductory text which dwells anew on the different aspects of his bigger-than-life personality, his unique life and his spiritual heritage. In doing so, we hope to have demonstrated how the so-called «Roerich’s case» is an excellent red thread to map out the relationship between art, politics and esotericism as well as the image Russia has of the East.

This article explores the way Nicholas Roerich’s painting follows an iconographical method, using images of early monuments inspired by the Buddhist rocky temple complexes. Through the use of the ancient temples of India, China, and Sri Lanka, Roerich guides us towards a philosophical and spiritual interpretation of his work. At the same time, he draws our attention to the art of Ajanta, to the temples of East and West China, and to a sculpture of Sri Lanka threatened with disappearance. Creating difficult symbolical implication of images, Roerich introduces us, in his pictures, to the idea of a Living Ethics doctrine.

In 1979, the Paris-Moscou exhibition opened in the newly inaugurated Centre Pompidou. It proposed, for the first time in Europe, a large-scale panorama of Russian and French art of the first three decades of the 20th century. The show was prepared in partnership with the USSR and included both realist – from the Ambulants to the forerunners of Socialist Realism – and Avant-garde artwork, the latter being for a long time hidden in the storage of the Soviet museums. In France, these artistic and political choices evoked a range of opposing reactions in the press, among visitors, intellectuals, and Soviet dissident artists. Our attempt consists in analysing this reception as a “touchstone” that reveals sensitive points of this era.
