In the early twentieth century, the southern Aegean islands and their administrative center, Rhodes, were among the regions with the highest overseas emigration rate in the Ottoman Empire. Mostly Jews and Orthodox subjects left for the United States, South America, or Africa, where they settled down, raised their families, did business, and created associations. In 1912, Rhodes experienced a political shift through the Italian occupation of the islands, known as “Dodecanese campaign”. Whereas it brought about several changes in local institutions and sociability, emigration continued well into the 1930s. This article discusses the emergence and transformation of a narrative about emigration from Rhodes, where memories and generational markers are intertwined. Based on accounts collected in the 1970s as part of oral history projects, as well as on the memoirs of migrants and their descendants, it contextualizes this narrative through archival sources from the period of the departures. The paper focuses on the descendant’s discovery of their (grand)parents’ experience, as well as on the transmission of memories from the latter to the former. It also argues that generational demarcation was crucial in the construction of a collective narrative that led to diverging memories between Rhodes and America, in which ethno-confessional identification increasingly prevailed. Thus, two distinct narratives came to divide the mobility experiences of Greeks and Jews; experiences which, in fact, often started in a context of proximity and affinity.

Although the historiography on Ottoman Turkish history highlights the rise of rationalism, scientism and materialist philosophies in opposition to Islam at the time of the transition from Empire to Republic in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the growing interest in alternative forms of spirituality in the literary world cannot be ignored. Indeed, a generation of authors who witnessed the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, and genocidal policies in Anatolia, found neither consolation within Islam and other monotheistic religions, nor intellectual satisfaction within materialist and rationalist philosophies. Beyond the shared historical experience and the promotion of a certain literary modernity, they formed a generation of authors and intellectuals who went off the beaten track and explored new possibilities in the fields of religion and spirituality. Within this generational questioning, which accepted neither Abrahamic monotheism nor its absolute negation, there were some who, like Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, and even Ahmet Haşim, were inspired by the appropriation and reinterpretation of some aspects of Greco-Roman paganism.
