Starting from a recent even—the refusal to include Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia as a symbol of Bulgaria in the Mini-Europe park in Brussels—this article examines the meaning and representations associated with this Russian saint in modern and contemporary Bulgaria. We begin by establishing the context in which this saint emerged in this Balkan country during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, after which Bulgaria gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. The adoption of the saint is closely linked to his symbolic connection with Emperor Alexander II, the “Tsar Liberator” for the young Bulgarian state. As its patron saint, Alexander Nevsky was integrated into certain aspects of political and ceremonial life, as well as into a commemorative policy that went hand in hand with the construction of memorial churches. In the second part, we review the memorial churches and chapels built in post-Ottoman Bulgaria and dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky. By examining these cases through the lens of the key actors involved, we observe a variety of motivations underlying the establishment of these churches which serve both as places of worship and sites of remembrance. The third and final part focuses on Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The process of its construction and its integration into the public space of the Bulgarian capital city reflects a range of issues and shifting political dynamics over half a century. We demonstrate how, in addition to its commemorative function (related to Russia), the cathedral progressively became a symbol of political and religious emancipation, acquired heritage value, and remained open to multiple uses.

The article examines the debates on the “third generation” in the larger framework of the debates on Bulgaria’s twentieth-century political history. The term “third generation” appeared as a self-designation in the 1930s among part of the radical nationalist youth who was influenced by contemporary authoritarian, fascist movements and regimes in Europe. These young people considered themselves the third active generation after the creation of the new Bulgarian state in 1878. They claimed that their generation was meant to restore the unity of the whole nation and achieve national regeneration and advancement. From a present-day perspective, the same generation could also be regarded as the last active generation before the instauration of the communist regime in 1944, which means it is now often regarded with compassion, and is even somewhat idealized. Such an approach results in a distorted understanding of the political views and activities of the young people of the self-proclaimed “third generation”. The article thus provides a new perspective on the mechanisms at stake in the rethinking and rewriting of the history of the pre-communist period.

The April Uprising (1876) in Bulgaria was instigated by a generation of activists born around 1850. After 1878, a competition arose between memorialists (Zahari Stoyanov, Stoyan Zaimov) and writers (Ivan Vazov). All of them however converged on a sacrificial vision of the uprising, supposed to have led to the liberation of Bulgaria.Twenty years later, a generation of activists born around 1870 launched the revolutionary movement in Macedonia. Although the historical conditions were quite different, they retained the conception of national sacrifice as being necessary from Bulgarian models. The Ilinden Uprising (1903) was heroic but had catastrophic consequences. To this day, the memorial competition between Bulgarians and Macedonians shows how strongly literary approaches still bias historical analyses..

The article focuses on the situation in the Bulgarian literature during the early 1920s – a time of undeclared civil war that followed the two national catastrophes (after the Balkan wars and after WWI). In those years, two important literary generations/aesthetics came to an end, which accelerated the process of canon formation. It thus highlights the dynamics at stake in the literary field, along with the attempts of the state to interfere and manage this field, mainly with spectacular writer’s jubilees and funerals. The interpretation offered here is based on a phenomenon that I call the “undeclared war of anthologies”. Indeed, anthologies became the place and instrument of aesthetic and political clashes, embodying different versions of the emerging lyrical canon and the possible directions of its future “growth”. Geo Milev’s Anthology of Bulgarian Poetry (1925) especially stood out among the rival models. My suggestion here is that, as far as literature is concerned, the war was not between “the young and the old” (as was the case before the wars) but between the young and the young, or between young and even younger poets. It was a war for the symbolic capital of youth in the literary field (as theorized by Bourdieu) which was also an ideological clash between left and right, between different versions of modernism and avant-garde, and between the autonomy of literature and its state institutionalization.

The article examines the issue of generation and generational models in Bulgarian literature and presents various practices at stake in their construction – from the divide between “young” and “old” in the early twentieth century to the establishment of a Communist regime in Bulgaria in the 1940s. The text emphasizes the period 1956-1989 and analyses the rise and fall of the “April generation” – its construction and empowerment between the 1960s and 1980s; the efforts to declare a new generation in the 1970s–, thus showing how the totalitarian state prevented the emergence and development of subsequent poetic generations through the political empowerment of the “April generation”.
