The article examines the issue of generation and generational models in Bulgarian literature and presents various practices at stake in their construction – from the divide between “young” and “old” in the early twentieth century to the establishment of a Communist regime in Bulgaria in the 1940s. The text emphasizes the period 1956-1989 and analyses the rise and fall of the “April generation” – its construction and empowerment between the 1960s and 1980s; the efforts to declare a new generation in the 1970s–, thus showing how the totalitarian state prevented the emergence and development of subsequent poetic generations through the political empowerment of the “April generation”.

The article focuses on the situation in the Bulgarian literature during the early 1920s – a time of undeclared civil war that followed the two national catastrophes (after the Balkan wars and after WWI). In those years, two important literary generations/aesthetics came to an end, which accelerated the process of canon formation. It thus highlights the dynamics at stake in the literary field, along with the attempts of the state to interfere and manage this field, mainly with spectacular writer’s jubilees and funerals. The interpretation offered here is based on a phenomenon that I call the “undeclared war of anthologies”. Indeed, anthologies became the place and instrument of aesthetic and political clashes, embodying different versions of the emerging lyrical canon and the possible directions of its future “growth”. Geo Milev’s Anthology of Bulgarian Poetry (1925) especially stood out among the rival models. My suggestion here is that, as far as literature is concerned, the war was not between “the young and the old” (as was the case before the wars) but between the young and the young, or between young and even younger poets. It was a war for the symbolic capital of youth in the literary field (as theorized by Bourdieu) which was also an ideological clash between left and right, between different versions of modernism and avant-garde, and between the autonomy of literature and its state institutionalization.

Although the historiography on Ottoman Turkish history highlights the rise of rationalism, scientism and materialist philosophies in opposition to Islam at the time of the transition from Empire to Republic in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the growing interest in alternative forms of spirituality in the literary world cannot be ignored. Indeed, a generation of authors who witnessed the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, and genocidal policies in Anatolia, found neither consolation within Islam and other monotheistic religions, nor intellectual satisfaction within materialist and rationalist philosophies. Beyond the shared historical experience and the promotion of a certain literary modernity, they formed a generation of authors and intellectuals who went off the beaten track and explored new possibilities in the fields of religion and spirituality. Within this generational questioning, which accepted neither Abrahamic monotheism nor its absolute negation, there were some who, like Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, and even Ahmet Haşim, were inspired by the appropriation and reinterpretation of some aspects of Greco-Roman paganism.

Romanian intellectual and literary history is still marked by the concept of “generation”, and the “1927 Generation”, also known as the “Young Generation”, has become a reference, a model, and even a myth. The stature and works of its central figures – its leader Mircea Eliade, Emil Cioran, Eugene Ionesco, Constantin Noica, and Mihail Sebastian –, the political flirting with fascism of some members, and the context of Greater Romania explain the attention paid to the subject and the subsequent body of literature. The aim here is to provide an overview, insisting on the importance of the generational aspect – as it was knowingly and explicitly assumed (thus central) in its leader’s discourse, and more generally in that of the intellectuals of the time –, as well as on the role it still plays in Romanian culture today as a “lieu de mémoire”, in Pierre Nora’s words, notably via the generation of its unfaithful heirs (i.e. those of the Păltiniș group). The generational reading of Romanian culture thus reveals a vision of history that was more memorial and philosophical than historical among these intellectuals who suffered from a “small culture” complex.

Between the publication of Borislav Pekić’s The Time of Miracles in 1965 and Danilo Kiš’s A Tomb for Boris Davidovich in 1976, Serbian literature underwent a real poetic revolution: moving from socialist realism (or whatever filled in for it in that part of Central Europe) to an advanced form of postmodernism. The revolution originated in a new conception of literature as a network of intertextual relations close to Foucault's concept of “fantastique de bibliothèque”. However, unlike Western European literature, which, in those years, was strongly influenced by anti-referential theories (structuralism) on the poetic level, and by Marxist and Maoist thought on the political level, Serbian literature, under the leadership of Pekić and Kiš, was oriented towards the promotion of reference and truth on the poetic level and the opposition to communism on the political level. In other words, if the contestation of classical realism was shared by Pekić and Kiš and their Western colleagues, it did not have the same meaning: for Barthes, Sollers, Ricardou, Jameson or Eagleton, it was synonymous with a fight against the bourgeoisie – the realist novel being, according to their definition, the emanation of the bourgeois mind –, whereas for Pekić and Kiš, criticizing realism as it was still practiced in Serbia in their time was tantamount to criticizing socialist realism (or, rather, its Yugoslavian counterpart). In short, if Western realism was bourgeois, Serbian realism was communist. Pekić’s and Kiš’s writings were critiques of the national literature that immediately preceded them and from which they wanted to depart, but they also criticized Western Marxist criticism, whose flaws and inconsistencies they clearly perceived.

This article aims to discuss my research on Albanian youth through the prism of a major work on modernity: Discordance des temps. Une histoire brève de la modernité [Discordance of Times: A Brief History of Modernity] by French historian Christophe Charle. This discussion, as well as my own reading of the book, places my research within the broader European context of Western modernity and revisits the concept of generation in interwar Albania. I therefore argue that generations actually have long-lasting consequences and suggest considering local modernity as a combination of both imaginary and genuine life experiences. A group called the Young (Neo-)Albanians championed the cause of the new generation and replaced the word modernity itself with the French term occidentalisation – meaning Westernization. An analysis of the interactions between Western modernity and local modernity that draws on Michael Werner and Bénédicte Zimmerman’s reflexive approach called histoire croisée (intertwined history) avoids confining the Neo-Albanians to fixed categories pertaining to practical or analytical definitions. In this respect, the Neo-Albanians become a dynamic referential in the face of pragmatic inducements of various kinds that may be modernity, post-Ottoman space, or generational effect.

The Intellectuals’ Hearth played a central role in the political, social, cultural, and economic transformation of contemporary Turkey. Founded in 1970, this influential right-wing club provided the Turkish state with a new official ideology, the “Turkish-Islamic synthesis”, which came to the fore after the 1980 coup d’état, a pivotal moment in Turkish history. The intellectuals of this club considered themselves a generation at odds with the Turkey of the 1960s, marked by strong social and political protest. Like the Kemalist intellectuals who had accompanied the founding of the young Turkish Republic in the 1920s, the members of the Hearth sought to get involved in the State apparatus in order to work towards its transformation from within. Therefore, a generational approach illuminates the way the Intellectuals’ Hearth reappropriated a certain Kemalist legacy to achieve its aim. Such a discussion also implies a genealogical reinterpretation of Turkish conservatism and an analysis of the construction of a collective memory on such political and cultural issues as secularism, religion, education, and the place of intellectuals in society.

The 1990s were marked by the break-up of Yugoslavia and the beginning of the digital revolution and saw the emergence of a first generation of private publishers, born on the ruins of the Socialist publishing system. In a reaction to the major political break characterized by the end of the Communist system, the war, the break-up of the Federal State, and the retreat into reinvented “national” cultures, these publishing professionals had the feeling they formed a generation.Examining the interactions between these circumscribed initiatives and the wider publishing scene, as well as the transmission of practices in spite of the obvious temporal ruptures, sheds light on the cultural recompositions that occurred within the states succeeding to the former Yugoslavia (where tensions emerged, for example, between national cultures and the persistence of a Yugoslav cultural space). Therefore, this article draws on my current research – which will eventually encompass all the successor states – into selected trajectories in publishing since 1990, but also into the processes of transmission and legacy on a larger timescale. I thus analyse the latter through the continuities in editorial practices, particularly the practices of translation as a source of knowledge and modernisation, as a space of freedom against the politicisation of the cultural sphere.

The April Uprising (1876) in Bulgaria was instigated by a generation of activists born around 1850. After 1878, a competition arose between memorialists (Zahari Stoyanov, Stoyan Zaimov) and writers (Ivan Vazov). All of them however converged on a sacrificial vision of the uprising, supposed to have led to the liberation of Bulgaria.Twenty years later, a generation of activists born around 1870 launched the revolutionary movement in Macedonia. Although the historical conditions were quite different, they retained the conception of national sacrifice as being necessary from Bulgarian models. The Ilinden Uprising (1903) was heroic but had catastrophic consequences. To this day, the memorial competition between Bulgarians and Macedonians shows how strongly literary approaches still bias historical analyses..

In the early twentieth century, the southern Aegean islands and their administrative center, Rhodes, were among the regions with the highest overseas emigration rate in the Ottoman Empire. Mostly Jews and Orthodox subjects left for the United States, South America, or Africa, where they settled down, raised their families, did business, and created associations. In 1912, Rhodes experienced a political shift through the Italian occupation of the islands, known as “Dodecanese campaign”. Whereas it brought about several changes in local institutions and sociability, emigration continued well into the 1930s. This article discusses the emergence and transformation of a narrative about emigration from Rhodes, where memories and generational markers are intertwined. Based on accounts collected in the 1970s as part of oral history projects, as well as on the memoirs of migrants and their descendants, it contextualizes this narrative through archival sources from the period of the departures. The paper focuses on the descendant’s discovery of their (grand)parents’ experience, as well as on the transmission of memories from the latter to the former. It also argues that generational demarcation was crucial in the construction of a collective narrative that led to diverging memories between Rhodes and America, in which ethno-confessional identification increasingly prevailed. Thus, two distinct narratives came to divide the mobility experiences of Greeks and Jews; experiences which, in fact, often started in a context of proximity and affinity.

The article examines the debates on the “third generation” in the larger framework of the debates on Bulgaria’s twentieth-century political history. The term “third generation” appeared as a self-designation in the 1930s among part of the radical nationalist youth who was influenced by contemporary authoritarian, fascist movements and regimes in Europe. These young people considered themselves the third active generation after the creation of the new Bulgarian state in 1878. They claimed that their generation was meant to restore the unity of the whole nation and achieve national regeneration and advancement. From a present-day perspective, the same generation could also be regarded as the last active generation before the instauration of the communist regime in 1944, which means it is now often regarded with compassion, and is even somewhat idealized. Such an approach results in a distorted understanding of the political views and activities of the young people of the self-proclaimed “third generation”. The article thus provides a new perspective on the mechanisms at stake in the rethinking and rewriting of the history of the pre-communist period.

In Turkey, the chronology of political generations is deceptively self-evident. The 1978 generation – i.e. the political successors to the sixty-eithers – is a label strongly linked to the revolutionary left. However, in the 1970s, it was not unanimously acclaimed among politically active leftists. This article looks into the “post-repression” political trajectories of Turkish and Kurdish women with a radical-left background prior to the 1980 military coup and reveals three typical pathways. It then offers a new conceptual category, the generation of the 1980 coup, which takes the military coup as a rupture (and as an opening towards the future). In that perspective, such a category avoids a terminology that would be too closely associated with the left and includes a wider range of people in terms of class-age and political orientation.
