Joan of Arc is present in varying degrees of intensity in Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry. How did she make this medieval figure of Catholicism and symbol of French cultural identity her own, and transport it to Orthodox Russia during the revolutionary era? This article answers the question from three angles. The first part examines the construction of a heroic image for lyrical subjects depicted in the guise of the fighting saint, exploring the poet’s connection with history. The second part shows that Joan of Arc is associated with poetic genius and creative power. She appears in a pagan context and merges with the King Virgin in works inspired by Russian folklore. The third part examines the poet’s tragic fate in the light of the Johannine mission and her conception of the poetic calling.

Images from ancient mythology and literature were predominant mythopoetic components of Russian modernist poetry. Global historical cataclysms of the first decades of the twentieth century, however, prompted Russian poets to turn to biblical imagery. Influenced by revolutionary upheavals, poets began to interpret contemporary events through the prism of biblical archetypes. My essay discusses a number of biblical images that attained special actuality in the period of “wars and revolutions”, 1914-1922. WWI and the Civil War were depicted through the imagery of the fratricidal Cain and Abel story. The 1917 revolutions were widely perceived through the imagery of major biblical events – creation, the Deluge, or the Exodus. The aim of the revolutions was often associated with the imagery of the Garden of Eden, and, accordingly, the generation of the revolution was associated with Adam and Eve. An axiologically opposite vision of the Bolshevik revolution likewise employed biblical imagery: the pre-revolutionary world was portrayed as Paradise lost, while “the fall into sin”, fratricides, and attempts to build the tower of Babel came in its wake. My paper also discusses the transformations in the self-perception of many Russian modernist poets under the influence of revolutionary events. The typological vision of contemporary times as equivalent to biblical times actualized the figure of the biblical prophet as a prototype for a modern Russian poet.

Although they have often compared to the Russian poetic avant-garde, the conceptualists choose to quote the authors of the Silver Age in their writings instead. Whether it is direct quoting or rewriting an already existent text, this approach belongs to the act of parody. However, by choosing these authors and these texts in particular, the conceptualists contribute, in their own way, to the collective memory of the Silver Age. Based on Dmitri Prigov’s poem мне голос был, this article offers to characterize this formal memory through the analysis of the parodic methods used and questions raised by the author. Although parody is associated with the playful aspect of conceptual poetry, the main goal of these poetic games remains the questioning of literary myths.

The theme of light occupies a central place in the Russian culture of the early twentieth century: it takes into account the concerns of theologians, philosophers, poets, painters and men of science. But light is not only the object of intellectual or artistic research; it is above all the principle and the aim. First of all we shall study light as a philosophical principle, from the beginning of Yevgeny Trubeckoy's essay “Svet Favorskij i preobraženie uma” [Thaboric light and transfiguration of the mind]. Then we shall examine the intimate connection between the light and the poetic word, from the examples in Vladislav Khodasevych’s works suggesting that light can be considered as a poetic principle, understood as principle of creation. Finally we shall show that light is also an ethical principle. The ultimate goal of intellectual or poetic search is to be a testimony of the light. This is undoubtedly a justification of all reflections on the sophianity of the world.
