In the wake of the ballet revolution ushered in by Marie Taglioni in the late 1820s and early 1830s, the Académie Royale de Musique continued to advance. The great choreographers of the period all produced major works – Saint-Léon, Mazilier, Perrot et Coralli – and ballets choreographed by Marius Petipa saw their first performances there, works like Giselle or Paquita which Petipa went on to revive in Saint Petersburg. In 1841, the last reprise of Les Noces de Gamache was performed, the template for Don Quichotte, with his brother Lucien in the lead role. At the same time, the school initiated by Pierre Gardel, a leading choreographer of the late eighteenth century, went into decline, due to a failure to adapt to the revolutionary introduction of pointe work. The period also saw the acme of the prima ballerina, pushed to its very limits under the aegis of Dr Véron. A wealth of archive information and period press reports shed clear light on the very differing practices separating Paris from Saint Petersburg.

Born in Marseilles in 1818, Marius Petipa arrived in Brussels with his family when he was barely one year old. He took his first dance steps at the Théâtre de la Monnaie at the age of just five, in the company of the best ballet dancers of the age. He went on to complete his classical ballet training at the Conservatoire de Danse founded some years earlier by Eugène Hus. This paper explores the various roles performed by Marius and members of his family during their time in Brussels and takes a fresh look at the time spent in Belgium by the Petipa clan. This provides us with a better understanding of the formative years of a child prodigy raised within a family of artists.

Lucien, l’autre Petipa

Lucien Petipa (1815-1898), Marius’s elder brother, was principal dancer first with the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, and then the Opéra de Paris. From 1839, he danced with illustrious ballerinas, notably the much-celebrated Carlotta Grisi, whom he partnered on a regular basis. His natural assets, physical presence and excellent elevation, together with his elegance and proficiency for mime soon won him the hearts of both the public and critics alike. He could not rival his brother’s talent for choreography, but still composed several ballets and sixteen interludes for operas. This paper retraces the artistic career of Lucien Petipa from the vantage point of primary sources conserved in the archives of the Library-Museum of the Paris Opera, with specific attention to Lucien Petipa’s ballet interludes, such as those he choreographed for Verdi’s Don Carlos.

Marius Petipa joined the ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in the spring of 1843, and remained with the troupe until the spring of 1844, under the stickling authority of Alexis Blache. This paper explores how Petipa, as a twenty-five year old, experienced his time in Bordeaux, as part of a troupe dominated by the personalities and talent of two couples of dancers, the Albert-Bellons and the Lucien Clairs. Close inspection of the Grand Théâtre archives and local press reports from the period shed light not only on Petipa’s time in Bordeaux, but also the context in which he lived and worked. The theatre was a leading centre for choreography at this time and consciously strove to resist the decadence of many provincial ballets, presenting a repertory of both amply performed pieces and more recent works. Material and financial constraints made a career in ballet difficult; the public’s expectations and demands were also a cause for constant concern and aesthetic opinions and cultural behavioural patterns transpire clearly through press reports and the diaries of those concerned.

This paper explores an autograph document, conserved in the Manuscript Department of Russian National Library in Saint Petersburg. The Document is composed of three versions of the same letter in French, dated 20 December 1886, perhaps addressed to the Director of Imperial Theatres Ivan Vsevolozhsky. The letter was written in a state of extreme irritation and appears to reflect a conflict between Petipa and the Direction, the source of which the Author investigates.

Marius Petipa danced in Saint Petersburg for over twenty years, from 1847 to 1869. His repertoire was colossal, but it was the ballets of Jules Perrot – Giselle, La Esmeralda, Faust, Le Corsaire, Le Diable à Quatre, etc. – which provided the mainstay of his performances. This paper examines press articles from the nineteenth century as a means of establishing an inventory of the different roles danced by Petipa, including both well-known (Phœbus, Faust, Conrad) and lesser known parts (Mitsislas in La Guerre des femmes or the principal male role in Les Tribulations d’un Maître de Ballet). Petipa’s greatest roles (Phœbus in La Esmeralda, Conrad in Le Corsaire), were also his favourite ones, and they shed light on the specific nature of his interpretative style, his stunning talent for classical dance and consummate handling of the Pas de deux. Conversely, this catalogue of roles also offers an insightful glance of the innate expressivity of male dance in Jules Perrot’s ballets. These were Petipa’s best loved and best executed roles, and they accompanied him throughout his career.

Le Corsaire, a ballet choreographed by Joseph Mazilier, was first performed at the Paris Opera on 23rd January 1856, but was removed from its repertory in 1868, never to be performed again. A revival was presented in Saint Petersburg first by Jules Perrot in 1858, and then by Marius Petipa, who staged four successive versions of the ballet in 1863, 1868, 1880 and 1899. It was thanks to Marius Petipa that Le Corsaire made its mark, becoming a cornerstone of Russian choreographic repertory. This paper explores the ballet’s structure in the two versions choreographed by Joseph Mazilier (the first in 1856 for Carolina Rosati, the second in 1867 for Adèle Grantzow), shedding light on their key moments, from the specific viewpoint of choreography. This in turn eloquently illustrates the mechanisms so successfully employed by Petipa in his adaptations of the ballet.

The Vestal (Vestalka), created by Marius Petipa in 1888, was the first ballet to be marked by the musical reforms launched by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, director of the Imperial Theatres. This period started with the retirement in 1886 of Ludwig Minkus as ‘composer of ballet music’ and the abolition of his post. The choice of an external composer, unversed in working for dance (Mikhail Ivanov), gave rise to a debate in the press and eventually led to other similar collaborations, notably with Tchaikovsky. This desire to ‘improve’ ballet music, combined with a new approach to theatre design initiated by Vsevolozhsky’s successors Sergey Volkonsky and Vladimir Teliakovsky, would shape the basic principles of Sergey Diaghilev’s enterprise. From this perspective, The Vestal was the start of a new age in ballet history and the aim here is to examine the musical issues surrounding it, together with the other circumstances of its creation.

This article deals with the ballet Don Quixote based on Cervantes’ novel and with music by Leon Minkus. Marius Petipa’s first version (in 4 acts) has had its premiere in Moscow in 1869 and Petipa has used in it mostly Spanish dances and pantomime. The second Petipa version in Saint-Petersburg in 1871 was extended to 5 acts and had many additions of classical ensembles. The ballet remained in the repertoire of both Russian principal theaters through the 19th century. But best known today is the Alexander Gorsky version premiered in 1900 at the Bolshoi in Moscow. Gorsky has revised the ballet, has introduced many new dances and new décor by well-known painters. Modern productions all over the world are now based on his ballet, but one should nevertheless remember that its first choreographer was Marius Petipa.

The collaboration with Glazunov corresponds to the last years of Marius Petipa’s activity. It is interesting to observe how such an obviously poor subject as Raymonda could have become a genuine success thanks to the joined talents and efforts of the composer, the ballet master, and the director Vsevolozhsky. The exchange of letters between them, and several complementary testimonies pour the light upon the process of their work. The article gives also a musical commentary of Glazunov’s score, whose style is as conservative as his orchestral science is masterly, and points out the numerous influences which can be identified in it.

It is a commonly held belief that the nineteenth century’s obsession with prima ballerinas marked the demise of the male ballet dancer. Petipa, steeped in the tradition of French ballet, was no exception to this rule, and the ballerina does indeed lie at the centre of his world. Within this eminently female configuration, the male dancer is often reduced to a supporting role, escorting the ballerina who takes centre stage. However, contrary to much of the choreography of the period from which male roles are almost entirely absent, Petipa’s heroes are never weak figures of disdain. The Imperial ballet counted a number of great male dancers, such as Pavel Guerdt, brothers Serge and Nicolas Legat, Christian Johansson or Enrico Cecchetti… It was also from the ferment of the Imperial ballet that a certain Vaslav Nijinsky emerged, heralding the advent of the male dancer’s rehabilitation in the twentieth century. This paper examines the social status of male ballet dancers within the dramaturgy of the Imperial ballet, along with the role they played in both choreography and the collective imagination.

Russian patrons of the arts and state support of institutions that taught music and dance contributed enormously to the success of the ballet in Russia’s Gilded Age. State support of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theaters made possible Petipa’s creation of new–and modern ballets. Tchaikovsky’s guaranteed income from Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck, provided the composer with the means to compose The Sleeping Beauty. The strong tradition of state and private patronage of musicians, composers, and dancers whose lives intersected during Russia’s Golden Age whetted the public’s appetite for classical ballet, reinforced Petipa’s vision of the classical ballet tradition and provided the financial foundation for the staging of The Sleeping Beauty, one of the masterworks of Russian ballet.

A shadow was cast over the latter years of Marius Petipa’s ‘reign’ by the simmering dispute opposing him to the director of the Imperial Theatres, Vladimir Teliakovsky. For two years, director and choreograph were pitted in a conflict which resulted in defeat for Petipa who found himself forced to retire after the failure of his last ballet, The Magic Mirror. Yet current publication of Teljakovsky’s Diaries offers a far more insightful glimpse of the theatre director’s motivations and a more eloquent vision of his views on ballet and criticism of Petipa. A comparative analysis of the diaries of both men serves as an encouragement for us to reappraise their mutual relations and invites us backstage, into the wings of the Russian ballet in the days of the Imperial Theatres.

Charles Didelot’s Prisoner of the Caucasus (1823), based on a poem by Pushkin, provides an early example of the Russian ballet’s engagement with the burgeoning nationalism that characterized the Russian arts in the nineteenth century. In the Soviet period, choreographers turned once again to Pushkin, most notably in The Fountain of Bakchisarai (1934), based on another work in the poet’s ‘Eastern’ cycle. Although Marius Petipa is generally seen as an exception in the history of Russian ballet, The paper proposes to examine Petipa’s œuvre as a vital link between the ballets of the Didelot and Soviet eras. It will trace both the artistic and political implications of these developments, with Petipa as a central, or ‘hinge’ figure in this history, in an effort to re-configure Petipa’s place in the history of late nineteenth-century Russian art.

When Marius Petipa, choreographer and Russian ballet master of French descent, died in 1910, he became the centre of a bitter dispute between the Russian Imperial Ballet School and that of the Paris Opera, with each battling to appropriate both the man and his work. The Russians sought to underscore Petipa’s quintessential Russian character, as part of the dissemination programme of Russian culture abroad. In the days of the Ballets Russes and white emigration, the Russification of the man known as Marius Iva-novitch Petipa was a powerful national aspiration. The French, on the other hand, strove to reappropriate Petipa in his role as ballet master and pedagogue, at a time when the press and ballet lovers were lamenting the torpor of the classical ballet scene in Paris. They portrayed Petipa as the man who, during his Russian exile, had perpetuated French talent in this field, intimating that Russia had thereby become the place in which ‘the great tradition of the French Ballet School’ had been safeguarded. Analysis of what was said about Petipa on the centenary of his birth provides ample proof of how the State instrumentalised his reputation as part of its cultural politics, as both the embodiment of the great Russian School and guardian of academic tradition.

How, we might wonder, did Igor Stravinsky assimilate the world of ballet, its traditions and interpretative methods? This is a key question for any study of the music of a composer who produced some of the twentieth century’s major ballet scores. It is generally thought that it was Mikhail Fokine, choreographer of The Firebird and a pupil of Marius Petipa, who first introduced Stravinsky to the world of dance. This paper refocuses our attention on Petipa himself. Indeed, it was through Petipa’s work that Igor Stravinsky became acquainted with ballet during his formative years in Saint Petersburg and through them that he became familiar with the aesthetics and technique of classical ballet. A number of sources enable us to put together an overview of when and how Stravinsky came into contact with Petipa’s art. The choreographic poetics of Petipa’s work played an important role in Stravinsky’s move towards Neo-classicism, a cornerstone of the composer’s aesthetic tenets.

». The work of Marius Petipa was a constant companion throughout the careers of the great Russian dancers Konstantin Sergeyev (1910-1992) and Natalia Dudinskaya (1910-2003). Sergeyev and Dudinskaya began their artistic careers in the 1930s, performing the lead roles in Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Raymonda, on the stage of the former Mariinsky Theatre. Some twenty years later, Konstantin Sergeyev directed revived versions of these ballets, with a sensitivity and respect for Petipa’s choreography of the highest order. Once again, the lead roles were danced by Natalia Dudinskaya, a pupil of the illustrious Agrippina Vaganova. Sergeyev and Dudinskaya took it upon themselves to perpetuate the great traditions of classical Russian ballet and bring them to full fruition. Their motto was ‘Forward ho to Petipa!’.

In France, the Ballets Russes are considered to be the focal point of avant-garde choreography, while the role they played in the renewal of an art from firmly anchored in the past and as link with the Russian works of Marius Petipa is all too often overlooked. Yet a good number of less illustrious Russian troupes, comprising dancers enrolled by Diaghilev from the former Imperial opera houses (Vera Nemchinova, for example), together with the large Russian diaspora present in France during the inter-war years, also played key role in programming and disseminating these ballets in Europe. Paris was far from being the epicenter of this phenomenon. This close inspection of the gala programmes of the Ballets Russes and troupes that bore the legacy of tradition, the Ballets Russes of Monte-Carlo and even the Ballet of Paris Opera (wich played a much later, secondary role), sheds light on the influence of Marius Petipa’s work in France, from a far less Jacobin perspective.

This paper investigates Petipa’s musical legacy in Balanchine’s works through a comparative analysis of the rhythmic interplay of steps and music in the Odile variation from Petipa’s Swan Lake (1895) and the female variation from Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux (1960). These works, both set to music used in Swan Lake, suggest that Balanchine extends Petipa’s rhythmic and formal clarity to develop a choreographic technique that Balanchine employs often in his works: establishing an analogy between choreographic and musical rhythms at the beginning of a piece and introducing increasingly complex but intelligible relationships towards the end. The paper explains these patterns using clips from filmed performances and images from the Stepanov and Laban notation scores as well as a shorthand notation that relates step rhythms to musical rhythms.

Many ballet masters of the 19th century all over Europe had not only been choreographers (in the sense of composing ballets) but also choreo-graphers (in the sense of notating (their own) ballets). The contribution focuses on the phenomena of producing and displaying spectacularity on stage as recorded in notation. The methodological frame of this analysis is ‘dance literacy’ as displayed in the widely documented corpus of notated dance texts: notated sketches by Petipa himself, the Sergeev Collection, full scores (of the ballets Paquita and Le Corsaire left by Henri Justamant; the content is the (exemplary) exploration of the media and aesthetics of spectacularity as skillfully communicated in the ‘writings’ of 19th century ballet masters. The perspective on (performatively) manufacturing ballets intends to contribute to the discourse on the then professional concepts and routines of ‘mise en scène’ (in Justamant’s words) mainly in France and Russia and on the aesthetical programs and diversities the 19th century ballet masters met – and created.

Marius Petipa is renowned both for his original choreographies and for his late-19th-century revivals in Russia of ballets created at the Paris Opéra earlier in the century, including Giselle (first created in 1841), Paquita (1846), Le Corsaire (1856), and Coppélia (1870). Doug Fullington and Marian Smith have collaborated on reconstructing two of these ballets: Giselle, staged for in 2011 for Pacific Northwest Ballet with Peter Boal, artistic director; and Paquita, staged in 2014 for the Bayerisches Staatsballett with Alexei Ratmansky as stager and choreographer. In this presentation, they make comparisons of the ballets themselves as well as the two different reconstruction processes.
