The year 1917 is a crucial moment in the biography of Mikhail Apelbaum (1894-1957), a famous interpreter of Yiddish songs. The artist had his hour of glory with the Jewish audience of the USSR. An actor of Jewish theater in pre-Revolutionary Russia, he began a career as a Yiddish soloist in the aftermath of the events of February 1917, when restrictions on the development of Jewish culture were abolished. During the Civil War he toured the cities of Ukraine and Belarus. He was the first to choose this form of itinerant career in the new historical circumstances of post-revolutionary Russia. It was during his concert activity in the first half of the 1920s that he developed his conception of Jewish folk song as a particular genre of Soviet music which reached maturity in the mid-1930s.

In 1917, Veniamin Semenov-Tian-Shanski (1870-1942) had long been a well-known and appreciated geographer. This notoriety allowed him to find work and a good social standing again after the Bolshevik Revolution, even though he could have been persecuted for his noble descent. In 1919, he founded the Central Museum of Geography, which he led until he was forced to resign in 1936. In his memoirs, mainly written in the 1930s’, and ending up with his death during the siege of Leningrad, he devotes a whole chapter to the “first years of the Revolution (1917-1922)”. The 1917 revolutions are considered in this work as the beginning of a long process. Underneath the usual soviet wooden language expressions or humorous stories which protect him, the author gives a critical view of the communist cataclysm, of events, which were disastrous for his family and for the country. He shows at what price the Soviet science was formed. A 1921 letter sent to his brother Valeri, who had emigrated to Finland, reveals the distance between the prudent narrative of his memoirs and what he really thinks.

The monumental scientific work of Salomon Reinach (1858-1932) who, according to his predilections and fads, wrote a very large number of articles and works on archaeology, prehistory, the history of arts and religions, as well as on educational literature and philosophy, has been the subject of numerous studies. As early as the 1890s, Russian ethnologists and historians turned to him as a specialist in the objects of antiquity in general and the Scythian world in particular. He also made two trips to Russia, in 1893 and 1901, during which he met Russian scholars and established contacts with various Jewish charitable organizations. Salomon Reinach’s correspondence with Russian scientists and representatives of Jewish communities in the Empire helps to understand the evolution of his positions on the issue of anti-Semitism. As a French Israelite who embodied attachment to the values of the Republic, he had to compromise before the Revolution on the question of the responsibility of the Russian State’s responsibility for the spread of anti-Semitism, before having to work after 1917 to relativize the importance of Jewish participation in the Russian Revolution under the pressure of French anti-Semitism, which was quick to denounce the collusion of interests between French and Russian Jews. The result was the impossibility or inability of the French Jewish community, of which Salomon Reinach was one of the most emblematic representatives, to determine the causes and consequences of anti-Semitism in Russia.

One of the major problems faced by the provisional government and before it by the Tsarist regime was the financing of external orders, without which it was impossible to wage a war over the long term and to support the crumbling infrastructure, especially transport. The situation had been further complicated when the United States had prohibited the access of its financial market to the Russian Empire because of the Jewish question. In April 1917, the United States was the first to recognize the new power in Russia. The Russian government was then able to obtain its supplies from the United States from the British credit account. The question of financing seemed to be resolved, at least in theory. The article analyses the consequences of this situation and the role of the money that was sometimes lacking at a crucial moment in Russian history, between the two revolutions of February and October 1917.
