Despite the persistence of the myth of the “Russian peril” propagated by both Bonapartist and royalist writers, a more nuanced view tends to emerge as well (the Cossack as a good savage, Russians being gradually civilized through the contact with the French, etc.), while France tries to find its place in a post-Napoleonic world where Russia is increasingly viewed as one of the main pillars of the new European order. The overview of the French cultural scene and popular entertainment indicates that there is indeed a widespread fashion for all things Russian. Religion, both orthodox and unorthodox, is another important factor that shapes the image of Russia in France in 1817. While the conservative and Catholic press tends to portray Russia in a positive key as a pious country promised to a great future, the numerous prophecies, both popular and highbrow, tend to consider Russia’s providential role within an eschatological scenario of salvation, and regeneration of France, the expected restoration of the true faith, and as a future leader of an anti-Ottoman crusade destined to finally reunite East and West.

The bi-weekly The Messenger of Europe (Vestnik Evropy) founded in 1802 by Karamzin, who published works in verse or prose, articles in literary history or literary theory, scientific articles, history articles, partly translated from foreign sources, has the reputation of becoming «pedantic» and conservative under the direction of Mikhail Kachenovski (1805-1830). Although in 1817 the journal is still in the tradition of Russian neo-classicism of the eighteenth century (with edifying tales, translations of the classics of Greek and Roman antiquity, articles of poetic taken from Marmontel and Batteux, anecdotes), he venerates however Zhukovski, criticizes the tragedies of Ozerov and Sumarokov, opens to Hebrew literature, point out the new novels of Mme de Genlis, publish Mme de Staël, an extract of the Universal catechism of the marquis de Saint-Lambert, denounces the rigmarole of German philosophy (Kant, Schelling). In the historical field he publishes the Campaign Notes (1812) of Ivan Lazhechnikov, he is interested in relations between the State and the Catholic Church in the different European countries, wants the abolition of the black slave trade, celebrates the death of Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, appreciates the situation of France under Louis XVIII. Journal of Muscovite teachers and amateurs, Vestnik Evropy occupies a middle place between the «Ancients» and the «Moderns», between the cosmopolitism and the pre-Slavophile identity claim.

The Hungarian Cottage is a ballet Didelot staged in London in 1813, and then recreated in St. Petersburg in 1817. The article examines the subject, which traces a famous episode of the Rákóczi’s Revolt against the Habsburg, the context of the ballet premiere, the ideas it conveys, its reception by the public. The author tends to demonstrate that this work, which reveals a national awareness and shows the link between the fate of individuals and the fate of the nation, on the border between two eras, reveals a paradigm shift of ballet.

This paper presents an analysis of the conception of language and poetry in the Essays in poetry and in prose of Batyushkov, in the context of the history of Russian lyric poetry. Batyushkov refers to Italian poetic language of Torquato Tasso or Petrarca to propose a new definition of Russian poetic language, between classicism and sensuality. The paper concludes with an analysis of the poem “Awakening” in order to demonstrate how the poet implements this language of the heart, which embraces times and cultures.

An underestimated poet Fedor Glinka is presented in the ambience of the year 1817, as he achieves the publishing Letters to a Friend, a sequel to his main work, Letters of a Russian Officer. A revolutionary wave swells in Europe, in the South America, and arrives in Russia, where at the same time begins the conquest of Caucasus and the masonic and theosophical mysticism is gaining ground. Glinka plays a pivotal role in several fields, translating, editing, writing and organizing the cultural and military life of this epoch. While discussing Glinka's «folk tale» Lucas and Maria (1818), the paper approaches briefly the issue of Jews in Russian society and literature around 1817.

This short account of the life and work of the great marine painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky aims to highlight his role in the development of the genre of landscape painting in nineteenth century Russian art. He who endowed Russian art with seascapes and naval battle painting also became one of the best ambassadors of Russian culture of his time. Aivazovsky’s artistic longevity of more than sixty years makes it possible to observe the evolution and progression of Russian academic landscape painting in through his works. Originally derived entirely from European models at the beginning of the 19th century, it evolved towards a specifically Russian painting style by the end of the century. Focused on the successive waves of artistic movements that affected the nineteenth century in search of a Russian national art and particularly touched by romanticism and realism, he was able to play a key role in revisiting the place of landscape painting in the Russian Academy. Nevertheless, I also wanted to highlight a lesser-known Aivazovsky, not just the great marine painter but Aivazovsky the landscape painter, because even today we know only part of his heritage of six thousand paintings, scattered in museums and private collections throughout the world. This suggests that his work will still reveal unexplored aspects that will enrich our knowledge of art and culture of the nineteenth century.

Famous in the Czech lands and in the Czech Republic until now, less generally known in Europe, the Czech Manuscripts of Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora were “discovered”, so to speak, at the end of the 1810s, containing ancient lyrical and epic poems allegedly written in old Czech, and dated, according to the first estimations, from the 9-10th and 12-13th centuries. The Manuscripts acquired a leading position in the set of myths and stereotypes supporting the national discourse all through the 19th century and quickly became an indisputable part of the literary, historical and symbolic patrimony of the Czech nation, experiencing at that time, like many others, its awakening in the centre of the Habsburg monarchy. They gave a decisive impulsion to Czech creativity in all the intellectual fields – with some very detrimental consequences, especially in sciences. Their authenticity was disputed from the very beginning, but every opponent had to face the same implacable resistance from the patriotic society. The public denunciation finally occurred in the middle of the 1880s. Defying a large part of the Czech cultural community and a fervent public sentiment, a team of new scientists of “realistic” orientation under the leadership of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk proved the Manuscripts to have been forged rather than discovered in 1817 and 1818 by some enthusiastic awakeners. This conflict opened the first serious national crisis of the end of the 19th century, leading to a real interrogation about the meaning and the future of the Czech national movement. This contribution focuses mainly on the first glorious and critical moments following the “discovery” of 1817-1818, wondering – at the other end of the chronological spectrum – what kind of bicentenary celebrations the Manuscripts still arouse in the very beginning of 21th century.

Ivan Krylov’s fable entitled The Author and the Brigand (published in 1817) was read by his contemporaries as an attack on Voltaire. Krylov himself rejected this interpretation. The article shows that the character of the fable is characterized in exactly the same way as the author of La Pucelle. Although Krylov tried to create a generalized image of a corrupter and libertine writer, all the particulars of this image faithfully reproduce the anti-Voltairean discourse of the time, and the reader of the fable could not but recognize Voltaire in its main character.

In the Histories of Russian Literature, the 19th century is generally regarded as the “Golden Century”, i.e. the moment of crystallisation of national myths and standardisation of texts and the national language, which most written cultures experience under various names: “Great Century”, “Classical Era”, “Century of National Revival”, etc. This terminology raises a whole series of questions to which this article attempts to provide some answers: what is the relevance of periodisation in centuries for literary history and to what regime of historicity does our representation of phenomena in Russian literature correspond? How can the symbolic weight of the Russian “Golden Century” (zolotoj vek) be re-evaluated today, according to what parameters and with what tools?

While physiology begins to appear informally in Russia in the early 1840s, Soviet philology assimilates the “Natural School” in Russian literature with the “Gogolian tendency” in Russian prose. Soviet philologists defined this tendency as Gogol’s “realism” infused with Belinsky’s revolutionary ideology. This extremely questionable notion is even today the theory most frequently found in the studies most commonly available in Russia.

In this article, we propose to study some aspects of a “silent” revolution that took place in Russian literature in the first half of the nineteenth century and which remains, despite its importance, almost unexplored. As Michel Foucault shows, at the end of the eighteenth century, we witness a radical cultural change: the individual begins to reveal what is behind his social masks: his private life, his individuality, the formation of his character, his emotions etc. To express himself, Jean-Jacques Rousseau exploits the form of the auricular confessions. This practice, on the one hand, allows him to use the pronoun "I", and on the other hand, helps to conceal the subjective affirmation behind a ritual self-humiliation. Subjective expression is further hindered in Russian society. Firstly, the different processes that marked individuation in Western Europe (Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment) did not take place in Russian history or they occurred in “weakened” forms. Secondly, the auricular confessions, fundamental, according to Michel Foucault, for modern self-analysis in Europe, did not have a major importance in the Russian Orthodox Church. Despite these facts, the subjective affirmation and self-expression existed in Russian literature and society in the first half of the nineteenth century. This study will seek to show that the “silent” revolution described by Foucault took place in Russia. To discover this global transformation, the article will analyse several autobiographical texts dating from the early nineteenth century.

Russian literature in the first third of the 19th century was still greatly affected by the previous epoch, when medicine in general and especially doctors were usually portrayed in a satirical manner. Accordingly, the medical characters created by Vasily Narejny and Nikolai Gogol in this period still exhibit traits inherited from the 18th century. However, a new literary dimension had started to appear thanks to the scientific advances of the time. Scientific thought was pervading domains ever more widespread, finally to take its place as part the national culture. Collective consciousness was moving on rapidly from that of the previous century when interest in science was often limited to worldly and aristocratic social practices. As a result, scientific discourse found its place in literary production, with the works of Alexander Pushkin and Vladimir Odoyevsky largely contributing to this innovation. This article analyses the literary dimensions of this period: To what extent were they influenced by previous attitudes? Is there a link between the rise of science and the evolution of literary production? How does literature embrace innovative ideas and transpose them into its domain? This study focuses on the medical theme, on the doctor character and on elements of scientific discourse, as cultural components that reflect society in a significant way.
