This article reexamines the significance of the 1812 Russian campaign in the history of France and Russia, as well as that of Europe as a whole, not only in political, diplomatic, and geopolitical terms, but also in terms of national identity. It proceeds to delve into the historiography of the 1812 campaign. For a long time, the military and strategic aspects of the conflict were given first priority, whereas societal dimensions were typically overlooked. Similarly, one took little interest in myths, collective imagination and representations stemming from the war. However, over the past few years, both in France and in Russia, the scholarly community has witnessed the emergence of new studies based on cultural, socio-cultural, or anthropological approaches, as this article attests.

In 1812, ethnic Lithuania and most of Belarus had only belonged to the Russian Empire for 19 years, the rest of it (the Vitebsk and Mogilev provinces) for 40 years. The withdrawal of the Russians facing Napoleon can be explained mainly by this fact: they didn't really feel at home before Smolensk. Napoleon hardly knew anything about the land in which he was “sinking”: he didn't have the right maps, the reports from the Polish spies were not reliable. The emperors needed both experienced and local recruits. Barclay had had time to recruit a few of them, but Napoleon didn’t meet any goodwill among Polish landowners who dominated these areas. Even the serfs knew nothing about the abolition of serfdom which had been proclaimed in the Duchy of Warsaw. The Polish landowning nobility remained more loyal to Alexander I than what is claimed in a subsequent Polish legend. From June to October 1812, many Poles from the Duchy fought to impose upon Napoleon a restoration of the 1569 Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which irritated the French who had other worries. However, when he came back and for quite a long time, Alexander had to pretend he approved this project, especially to win the minds of the Duchy. We’re striving to show, by analyzing some of the directive of the seven Lithuanian provisional Government committees (ministries), that they were going against the French expectations and “departmental” authorities, without contact with the population. By crossing archives from Russian, Polish and French dignitaries it’s possible to reconstruct the ephemeral and fragile projects which led in six months to a catastrophe for the Poles and the French, but allowed the Russians to incorporate the “Polish provinces” (called “the Western Governments” after 1831) to the Empire for a century.

The French revolutionary and Napoleonic armies have from the beginning the reputation of hostility towards both religion and clergy. It seems though that the situation evolved during the period in question, undoubtedly because of the more diversified origin of the troops fighting under French command. In any case, during the 1812 campaign French soldiers and officers showed much respect towards their dead. Moreover, contact with religions of the Russian empire and orthodox clergy awakened much interest on the part of the invaders.

The article examines the impact of the Russian Orthodox Church on Russia’s struggle with Napoleonic France in 1812. The author studies the multifaceted activity of the Orthodox clergy: anti-Napoleon preaching that constructed a negative, « godless », and somehow even demonic image of the enemy (the « black legend » of Napoleon) ; the role of regimental priests in the regular army; participation of the parish clergymen in the formation of volunteer corps and in the « people's war ». Other topics are Napoleon’s church politics that led to his excommunication, and the fate of the Orthodox shrines under the French occupation. The author comes to the conclusion that the Patriotic war of 1812 was not only a military and political conflict but also a religious clash of two different civilizations.

Among the publications devoted to the analysis of the concept of narodnost’ in Russian thought and literature, a number of mainly Soviet studies underline the close link that exists between the Patriotic War of 1812 and the emergence of the Russian national identity, prototype of the concept of nationality (narodnost’). Now, if the existence of the term seems to be attested as early as 1806 under the pen of S. P. Zhikharev, narodnost’ is not commonly found before the 1820s. For writers and publicists of 1812, the construction of a Russian national identity is first manifested by the exaltation of a unifying patriotism against the Grande Armée. Yet, it is the constituent elements of this patriotism that outlines the contours of what will constitute the concept of narodnost’: on the lexical plan, the key terms «people» (narod), «Russian» (rossijane, rossy, russkie), «motherland» (otečestvo) or expressions such as « Russian God» (russkij Bog), «national spirit» (narodnyj dux) are the vectors of ideas which thematically confront the Russian historical and spiritual specificity and the identity of the Western invaders. It is therefore interesting to revisit these elements of patriotism of 1812 as it appears in the main newspapers of the time in order to understand the nature of the Russian national identity that emerges in the wake of the Russian campaign of 1812.

Anna Bunina grew up and lived in the mist of officers. This undoubtedly contributed to the formation of her patriotic discourse, especially since this milieu formed in great part her reading public. Field Marshal M. Kutuzov himself supported her. In this context, it is not surprising that several of her writings in prose and in verse were devoted to the 1812 war and especially one article – The rescue of an unhappy family - and several poems, the main one being On the extermination of the French who, with arrogance, invaded the heart of Russia. These works have numerous points in common with anti-French and anti-Napoleonic writings of the period and especially those of F. Glinka, Derzhavin, Zhukovsky, Karamzin. We find here the same image of a holy, courageous, just Russia contrasting with that of an adversary shown under the blackest traits: coward, barbarian, cruel and revolutionary. In addition, we find a glorification of Alexander I who appears all the more peaceful and human as Napoleon is described as bloody and diabolic. Thus Anna Bunina has participated in the construction of a Russian identity which is defined as being positive in relation to the foreigner covered with negative characteristics.

The description of French soldiers quartering their horses in Orthodox churches is one of the most popular themes in Russian folklore on the war of 1812. There are numerous accounts of similar events. However, the author of this article shows that this subject is not an absolute reflection of the truth but, rather, a coïncidence of real events and topoi of oral traditions. The authors of popular works constructed the image of the French according to the ancient archetype of the foreign ennemy, attributing to him all the appropriate traits and, in particular, hate of all that is sacred for the orthodox. The transformation of churches to stables appears to be one of the manifestations of this blasphemous conduct. Even though the French stabled their horses for practical reasons alone, the connection between their actions and the archetypical image of the enemy was perceived by the people as proof of the religious character of this war.

This article is about the bicentennial celebration of the Patriotic war of 1812 that took place in the Russian Federation. Just as the celebration of the 100 and 150 anniversary, it required a long preparation on national level and the support of the state at the highest level. It mobilized the whole of society from schoolchildren to sportsmen including, of course, historians.

Research into the origins of the 1812 war inevitably leads to an examination of the reasons why the Emperor of the French invaded the Russian Empire, and this leads on to a consideration of the deeper causes of the conflict, a conflict which sits within both the recent and perennial confines of European geopolitics, themselves linked to Napoleon’s desires for French predominance. Viewed in this light, the treaty of Tilsit contained within itself the seeds of the confrontation to come, even though it is thought to have rubber-stamped a Franco-Russian «sharing the world». The treaty was nothing other than an agreement imposed by a victor on his defeated enemy, in spite of the (very temporary) exchange of compliments between the two emperors. The peace had in the end only two fundamental aims: namely to bring Alexander I into the war against England, whilst at the same time restricting his ambitions to the east of the Continent. The Tsar thus accepted, on one hand, to put his economy in danger, and on the other hand, to abandon most of his geostrategic plans in Europe. As for Napoleon, he seemed to have achieved one of the political aims of the European West, which was to keep the «Barbarians from the North» far away from the center of the Continent. It then becomes easier to understand why the descent into war was unavoidable. Napoleon’s and Alexander’s systems, geopolitical ambitions and respective imperial histories were too incompatible to enable them to cohabit for long. Tilsit had only been a truce.

The 1812 Russian Campaign impacted the political situation in all of Northern Europe. Even Finland, which was not yet a country, had to overcome the consequences of the French-Russian war: the Finnish political leaders, supporting the Russian domination of Finland, created a huge campaign of propaganda against Napoleon. This article will analyse the political reasons of the pro-russian choice of Finnish leaders, and will explain the connection between this pro-russian position and the birth of Finnish national feeling, which would lead to the independence of the country one century later.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the image of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 in the Spanish press, as well as to consider different aspects of the bilateral foreign relations between Russia and Spain during the period. First, we will offer a brief exposition of the situation of Spain in 1812, a country partially occupied by the French forces, which was struggling since 1808 in a double conflict: a war of independence against the Napoleonic invasion, and an internal confrontation between collaborators and patriots, along with a national revolution that would oppose, on the patriot side, absolutists against liberals. This political situation would influence decisively the Spanish press of the time, a press that can be classified into three different groups of newspapers: the afrancesados (Spaniards collaborating with the French invaders), the absolutists and the liberals, the latest being the most important and influential group. The vision by the Spanish newspapers of the French invasion of Russia in 1812 will be analyzed afterwards. Finally, we will try to examine the bilateral relations between Spain and Russia during this period. Thus, three different aspects will be considered: the diplomatic relations (Russia became the first country to recognize the Spanish liberal revolution, its new Parliament and its Constitution, by the Treaty of Friendship, Union and Alliance signed by the Tzar Alexander in 1812), the reciprocal military influence and support, and economic and trade relations.

The author examines the evolution of the 1812 Russian Campaign memory in Italy, analyzing how this « site of remembrance », initially removed from the 19th century historiographical tradition, has been progressively integrated into the national history, to the point of looking like a heroic event that finds a place in the Pantheon of the battles of the Risorgimento. After recalling the main points that characterized the Italian participation in the 1812 Franco-Russian War, the author reviews the transformations of the image of this event after the fall of the Napoleonic empire. The essay concludes by examining current historical research and comments on the results of the recent studies that helped to revive and renew themes, approaches and interpretations of the 1812 War, which are also marked by the persistence of clichés and preconceived ideas which still tend to eclipse the first Russian campaign memory in Italy.

Based on various testimonies and diaries of the begining of the 19th century, this article illustrates, on the one hand, the feelings of the Italian people about the campaign of Russia that expresses the rejection of the occupation of Italy by the French and, on the other, presents the position of cardinal Pacca who in his Memoirs gives a providentialist interpretation of Napoleon’s fall.

In 1813, the accounts of «eye-witnesses» about «The occupation of Moscow by the French» were printed in a series of editions of the Conservateur impartial, a magazine published in French by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in St. Petersburg. That same year it was published in Russian in Vestnik Evropy. In 1835, large extracts from the same accounts were presented (with and without quotation marks) in Armand Domergue’s book Russia during the imperial wars (1805-1815). He was the former manager of the Imperial theatre in Moscow and attributed them to a «Russian lord». In 1871, Description by Moscow inhabitants of the stay of the French in Moscow and of the fire of this city, attributed, on the basis of S. S. Uvarov’s remark to French chevalier d’Ysard de Villefort, was published in Brussels. A Russian translation had already been published in 1869 in Russkij arxiv. We assert that these three publications, independent from one another, are the works of one author, most likely – a «Russian Frenchman». В 1813 г.

Astolphe de Custine visited Russia in 1839, the year when the 25th anniversary of the victory of 1814 was celebrated. That is why the theme of 1812 appears in the text of La Russie en 1839 and it helps Custine to emphasize once again the defects of the Russians such as hypocrisy and cruelty. It becomes quite explicit in the Appendix of the book which is an important part and supposed to remain in the reader's memory, like all the extracts placed at the end of any text. In the Appendix, we can read two stories of French prisoners in Russia in 1812. Both are presented as truthful and registered by the author straight from their heroes. However, it turns out that, first, the two narrators are unreliable and secondly, in his descriptions of the horrors of captivity, Custine didn't rely on eyewitness accounts but on books or more exactly one book, written by Philippe de Ségur, whom he also quotes explicitly in La Russie in 1839 but in other cicumstances. This book relates the sufferings of free French soldiers retreating towards the Russian border but not those of French prisoners. If Custine used quotations from Ségur, a clever compiler called Jean-Juste-Etienne Roy later used quotes from Custine himself to embroider a story of captivity, which up to now researchers in Russia have believed to be a true story. The two depictions at the end of the article show the parallels between Segur and Custine as well as Custine and Roy.
