This article focuses on the role of the visual aspects in the poetics of Daniil Kharms (1905-1942), an avant-garde poet who, in the 1930s, became the so-called absurdist writer. The reminiscences of Kazimir Malevich’s art that we can find in Kharms’ notebooks are analyzed in the context of his search for the “purity of the order.” This essential category of the Kharmsian ars poetica is strongly related to the problems of the visual and verbal representation of the objects of the external world. These problems are explicitly raised in the later text Maltonius Olbren (1937), and also in a series of youthful drawings (1919) that function as a matrix of meanings, in which the pictorial and the verbal duplicate and complete each other.

Dmitry Prigov left us a lot of different “texts” (poems, novels, graphic art, performances and so on), in which quotation is playing a central role. I his artistic worlds, Prigov developed an original poetics and a well-defined strategy from the point a view of behaviour as of creative activity. In Prigov works the author is no more a subject in charge of the quotation or a conscience who refers to well-known texts and culture; he becomes himself a quotation. Furthermore, Prigov suggested a behavioural understanding of intertextuality that can be thought as part of the relationships between human and animal, between Benehmen and Verhaltung in Heidegger’s words.

This paper considers the use of the written text and the literary vocalized text in the films by Kira Muratova, a Soviet and post-Soviet film director. The vocalization is produced in affiliation with Russian theater from the 1910s and explores the artistic process that transforms the written text into film. The written text and the vocalized literary text in Muratova’s films simultaneously remind us of stage directions, literary descriptions, as well as theatrical asides. The film director chooses sentences that do not fulfill any of the classic cinematographic speech functions while signaling their heterogeneity. These vocalized and written texts make the director’s “voice” audible and reassert the value of reading and listening to the text as a distinct activity in the process of film viewing.

The paper explores the complex interrelationship between experience, discourse and visuality in the works of Dmitry Prigov, Irina Nakhova, Arkady Dragomoshenko and Boris Mikhailov. All of them display a distinctly conceptual approach to the interaction between visual and verbal forms of expression. In this paper experience will be presented in terms of emotional patterns shared by a historically transient collective. If Dmitry Prigov gives expression to the range of voices surrounding him on all sides by translating them into poetic and visual images alike, Irina Nakhova is interested in spatial rendering of her experiences. Nakhova's usage of spatial language in her installations (inseparable both from the space of private living and from the social context)and her exploration of conflicting pictorial spaces in her paintings make her works highly original. While Russian poet Arkady Dragomoshchenko is interested in the capacity of language to “see” or portray things, Ukranian photographer Boris Mikhailov subtly balances between the signs of a recognizable past and those mnemonic images that are never reduced to the visible. Poetry teaches us to see visibility in the making, and photography combines the visual image with that which makes it come into being, i.e. social experience as it is lived and felt.

In the work of Yuri Albert, who is an artist dealing with texts in several works, what stands in the first place is an artistic contemplation of the very possibility to consider and to shape the perception of text, the ways of its reading or reflection. What Albert highlights is the physical connection between the text, its reference field and the recipient, the mediality of the writing/painting and also a study of the very visibility of text and prerequisites of its – tactile – perception. The unique materiality of text is historically and typologically connected with the specific conceptualization and functioning of samizdat, a phenomenon, which influenced not only soviet cultural history, but also its artistic means. This fact finds in Alberts works a thin, although indirect expression. A special role from the point of view of the visibility of the text plays the theme of the connection of artistic act with blindness and the method of drawing by ashes from the burned books. In the concept of drawing as the transfer of authors body into the picture, Albert emphasizes the process of the physical perception of invisibility and of what is not possible to depict. Creating self-portraits by ashes from his favorite books, the author connects radically, brutally and sentimentally at the same time, his intimate nexus to works of literature with the raw material of pictures/books, based on the burning/painting process.

The present paper will examine the notion of “cinematographic skaz” (kinoskaz) related to the study of different strategies that enable the transposition of the oral indirect speech into Soviet silent movies. According to the works of Russian Formalists on the differentiation between literary and cinematographic languages, the purpose of this paper is to show how gesture replaces orality in another system of perception (for example in The Undercoat (1926), Grigori Konzintsev's and Leonid Trauberg's film that utilises Nikolai Gogol’s skaz). The reflection on the aesthetical and formal conflict between literary and cinematographic skaz can be also extended to the study of performance, including balagan or Yiddish and Ukrainian popular theatre (from which Russian cinema partly derives from), mimodrama (The Undercoat by Marcel Marceau) and contemporary monodrama (How I ate a dog by Evgeny Grishkovets).

Russian cinema came into existence through literature. From the beginning of the 1910s the practice of adapting for the screen of the great examples of national literature was extensive. While the affective and cultural argument of “literarocentrism” is often used, the present paper will argue that sociological approaches to creative developments in the 1910s, as well as to the ideological context of Tsarist Russia should be taken account of, too. Albeit the adaptation of classics developed primarily in relation to commercial profitability, it also maintained the intellectual guarantee for the new art scrutinised by the cultural elite. As symbols of the culture of excellence, classics contained the promotion of national values that appealed to the imperial censorship. The notion of literarocentrism and the strong cultural dimension of the use of literary classics was strongly felt when theatrical avant-garde figures worked for cinema and transformed the practice of adaptation of classics into an experimental form no longer with the prospect of illustrating, but rather of embodying literary realism on the screen. Film adaptation emerged as an intertextual and dialogic form derived from the Russian tradition of interdisciplinary approach to culture and modernist search for a new synthesis of all artistic forms of expression. Thus Russian filmmakers created their unique cinematographic language that paved the way for the gradual emancipation of cinema from narrative forms of expression.

This article examines the relationship between the story The Hedgehog in the Fog, written by Sergei Kozlov, and the animated film by the director Yuri Norstein, adapted from Kozlov’s story, based on a script by the author and illustrated by Francesca Yarboussova. This film distinguishes itself radically from the other adaptations of Kozlov stories by its atmosphere, its poeticism, and the message it carries. The film increases the dramatic tension of the story by purely cinematic means (sound, color, rhythm, framing), diversifying its different aspects by mixing them with other stories, and by expanding the symbolic meaning of the narrative and giving it a sacral and mystical dimension. By doing this, Norstein expands one interpretive potential of the text: although the series of stories of the hedgehog and his friends constitute a universe from which evil is nearly absent, anxiety, fear, and existential doubt are perceptible, in a filigree pattern, almost as an echo in the text. Norstein’s cinematic adaptation is thus the result of what might be called an “interpretative amplification”.

In 1974, the film director Andrei Konchalovsky proposed to make a movie about the conquest of Siberian oil. As this subject was then highly important from an economical and ideological point of view, a “State-order” (goszakaz) was immediately signed. But Konchalovsky also wanted his movie to be, for him, a “bridge to leave:” he wanted to work in Hollywood. Therefore he developed in Siberiade, as in others of his movies, a “double code” of reading and understanding, this “double code” being based on the use of quotations, coming from very different horizons and skillfully chosen and mixed. In this case, these explicit quotations were, on the one hand, from novels on Siberia, which Gueorgui Markov, one of the officials of the Soviet literature, had been writing and publishing since the end of the 30’es, and, on the other hand, from 1900, the movie, that had just been made by Bernardo Bertolucci, an Italian friend of Andrei Konchalovsky.

The article proposes an interpretation of an archetypal serpentine iconographic code, recurrent in visual and verbal arts of the avant-garde period, as an expression of a range of liminal esoteric experiences, including the rite of passage, initiation, split consciousness, ritual death and resurrection, violent conflict between the rational aspect of human nature and libido, and the opposition between oppressive social structures and individual freedom. An analysis of texts by Gaïto Gazdanov, Vladislav Khodasevich, Fedor Sologub, André Breton and Robert Desnos demonstrates that the discourse of initiation is generally articulated in an inter-disciplinary semiotic “space,” leading to creative exploration of various forms of ekphrasis. Literary narratives are juxtaposed against selected works of plastic arts that employ a similar iconographic code to represent initiation, in particular Max Ernst’s 1920 collage. The comparative treatment of these avant-garde works highlights the adaptability of ekphrasis and its propensity for evolution far beyond the conventional verbal rendering of artefacts.

About fifteen years ago, the notion and the term of ecphrasis were reactivated in the Russian literary studies. They have been put to good use but their real utility is not evident as they are still in competition with other terms referring to the relations between literature and visual arts. An attempt is made here to systematise such relations drawing upon some examples of the modernist period (Kandinsky, Zamyatin, Ehrenburg etc.). It is argued that the verbal representation of an ecphrastic kind cannot be fully explained as a transcoding/translating procedure as a visual model is not always required to support it. On the other hand, a discussion of different theories concerning the interrelation literature/visual arts (Krieger, Barthes, Mitchell, Bal, Faryno), whether explicitly reffering to the notion of ecphrasis or not, leads to conclude that the latter functions like a way to stress the artistic nature of the literary verb, or, to put it in formalist terms, like “stripping bare of the device.”
