Fëdorov has often been referred to as “The Moscow Socrates.” As O.V. Marchenko and others have demonstrated, this is certainly an accurate term to describe Fëdorov’s manner of life. But I would submit that the ideas that Fëdorov and Socrates lived for are diametrically opposed. This is particularly evident in their contrasting interpretations of the Delphic injunction to “Know Thyself”, and in their contrasting attitudes to the idea of death. For Socrates, to fear or oppose death is to act as if we know what we do not know. Perhaps, he argues, death is even a good thing. For Fëdorov, on the other hand, death is the one great evil in the universe, and all human thought and effort should be directed toward eliminating death for all past, present, and future humanity. Fëdorov and Socrates, then, while living in a similar manner, offer diametrically opposed solutions to two of the fundamental problems in intellectual history. Questions debated even today about the “self” — what it is and how we can “know” it — and questions about death — not only whether it can be but whether it should be eliminated — suggest that the differences between the Fëdorovian and Socratic viewpoints are relevant and worth reviewing.

At the end of the 19th century, but especially at the end of the 20th, with the appearance of “new history”, the optimistic view of the idea of progress was questioned. One of the essential aspects of the dialogue between Nikolai Fëdorov and Vladimir Soloviov for many years was based, apparently, on how to design our relationship to the past, to the missing generations. They agreed to design the relationship to the dead in an ethical perspective (which joined a negative attitude toward progress and led to refusing to see the death of others as the inescapable condition of the prosperity of future generations), but they differed on an essential point: the Fëdorovian ideal of resuscitation of the dead cannot be achieved, according to Solovyov, in a dimension that is not that of earthly reality. Their common starting point was a bad relationship to nature that Solovyov had denounced in his lecture “On the decline of the medieval view of the world”. This “offence against nature” was the cause of the agricultural calamities that threaten humanity. An example was the great famine of 1891 that so impacted people’s way of thinking. But while for Solovyov, realization of the ideal principle in the material sphere means the end of the whole historical process, for Fëdorov, who refuses the idea of transcendence, perfection, the new immortal state, will not mean a shift out of time, for this can be done only on this earth. "Resuscitation" must be the natural extension of the historical process.

Nikolaï Fëdorov’s grand project of overcoming death and resurrecting all former generations with scientific and technical means is aimed at the creation of a “paradise” which eliminates the aporia inherent in all secular theories of progress as well as in the Christian belief in an otherworldly existence. Created by a united mankind without divine assistance, this “paradise” is an essentially immanent one, there being neither “doomed” nor “victims of history”. Theologians consequently reject Fëdorov’s “religion of humanity” as incompatible with a Christian understanding of sin, death, and redemption, whereas transhumanists erroneously refer to him in their aspirations for self-optimisation and personal immortality. If the ethical foundation of Fëdorov’s project is overlooked, it turns into nothing more than an engaging text of science fiction, a spectacular episode of imaginative thinking. To avoid this reductionist approach, we should focus on the principal impetus driving Fëdorov’s thinking: an unconditional obligation to redeem all former generations and to pay our debt to the “victims of history”.

The influence of Nikolaï Fëdorov on Andreï Platonov’s world view and prose was a matter of multiple developments. Today it can be said that this overall influence is an obstacle to a comprehensive analysis of Platonov. After a brief discussion of the methodological position which permits such a criticism, we proceed to examine a brief, enigmatic and nevertheless very typical novel of Platonov, The Sea of Youth (1931). We show how important the ideas of Fëdorov or those linked to Fëdorovian context are in the formation of the style, images, and composition of the novel.

The article is devoted to the basic concepts of Nikolaï Fëdorov’s philosophy. It defines his ontology and anthropology, ethics and aesthetics, philosophy of history and philosophy of love. It is shown that the philosopher, who was consistent and uncompromising in his attitude to death, especially emphasized Resurrection as the main member of the triad “Death – Immortality – Resurrection”, which marks the transition of existence to the state of perfection. The All-United, unquenchable being of the Kingdom of God, embracing nature and humanity in their fullness, is in Fëdorov’s philosophy an ontological norm, opposing the mortal world, which is subject to the law of entropy and discord. Putting forth the task of overcoming death and the regulation of nature, the philosopher justifies it on evolutionary terms, by appealing to the idea of man as mind, consciousness of nature, and in religious terms by appealing to the commandment of “possession of the earth”, given to man at Creation.

It is commonly recognized that Pavel Filonov played one of the central roles in the “synthetic modernism” which included futurist and post-futurist avant-gardes. This statement, as well as the equally accepted parallel with Andrei Platonov, give us an opportunity to return to the ancient idea about a trend inside this movement which could be defined by a poetics of semantic and formal shift [sdvig], by a complex neo-primitivist stance, and by a more or less obvious relation to the teachings of Nikolaï Fëdorov. Here, we try to show that an important meeting point of between Filonov’s and Fëdorov’s conceptions was their programmatic lack of distinction between the living and lifeless, inert matter, between organicism and mechanism. One result of this position was a kind of palingenetic utopia, a vision of a future humanity arriving at a higher, improved, and sublimated state of development, at its “universal dawn” in the Filonov’s words.

This article, devoted to the founder of the Russian cosmism, sees Fëdorov as the logical continuation of the most productive trends in Russian, but also foreign philosophy. Having developed his major project of common work to save humanity from self-destruction by proposing ways of overcoming reciprocal enmity, Fëdorov laid down the principles of a vision of the world, some parts of which come from Russian tradition, namely organicist thinking from the beginning of the19th century, but especially from a particularly original writer of the end of the 18th century, Alexandre Radichtchev, whose famous book, About Man, his Mortality and Immortality, puts forth the idea of a form of immortality that concerns the body, foreshadowing Nikolai Fëdorov’s teaching.

In this article, Svetlana Semionova presents three portraits of thinkers who try to think from their own singularity about the future of mankind in a world in evolution. A highly marked singularity, since the focus here is on a Russian essayist Fëdorov, a French Jesuit (Teilhard de Chardin) and an Indian mystic (Aurobindo). For each of them, the central issue is the future of man (and humanity) – anthropogenesis – on the threshold of a world whose structures are permanently changing and becoming more complex, as Teilhard observed in his research on geology and paleontology. Fëdorov and Teilhard de Chardin have a religious base in the Christian tradition, although submitted to a fairly radical reconsideration, with a special emphasis, for Teilhard de Chardin, on the notion of cosmogenesis. The largest costrast concerns the Indian thinker, for whom anthropogenesis moves man away from the world, urging him to break free from inherited humanity to something to appear in himself that could be called a quasi-deity. The relationships between these three figures is complex, in both their similarities and their contrasts.

This article offers a socio-psychological interpretation of the key ideas of Nikolaï Fëdorov, particularly on the “resuscitation” of the father and the need to populate other planets with these ancestors-zombies. Studies of the image of zombies in mass culture are often based on an interpretation, in the light of the Œdipus complex, of the relations between the brothers and their tyrannical father. The need to overcome anxiety inspired by this father drives the brothers to revolt against the primitive horde in order to kill the tyrant. The taboo regarding the murder of a totemic victim is related to anxiety that the father might come back as a zombie (or ghost). At this time appears the ambivalence of love-hate feelings and a symbolic restoration of the paternal function and paternal name (Lacan). In this sense, we cannot look at the Philosophy of the common work of Fëdorov as an alternative to the model of Enlightenment on a purely declarative level. In the context of a structure of widespread persecution, as shown by René Girard, we can see the image of resurrected fathers as an inclusion-resurrection scheme that takes the form of an exclusion of fathers-zombies by transferring them to other planets. In the specific case of Nikolai Fëdorov – natural son of Prince Gagarin (the coincidence with the name of the first Russian cosmonaut looks especially sinister), the desire to “resurrect the fathers” can be seen as an attempt to take symbolic control over the moment when the father goes away, leaves his wife and his child – an attempt that reaches its culminating point in the idea of “resuscitation”, which can be considered as a revenge against a father who, in his lifetime, never recognized him as his son.
