The article is a brief description of the phenomenon of Russian cosmism and the projection of its main ideas in present time. It presents the main ideas of the two branches of cosmism, scientific and religious-philosophical each of them possessing specifics features despite their essential unity. Analyses are given of the main cosmist ideas: that development is orientated; that life, consciousness, human labour can be seen as a factor of negentropy. The idea of regulating nature and the noosphere, which are represented in Christian cosmism, ideas of the justification of history, a demand for ethical responsibility of science, the concept of art as creating life, all these aspects of Russian cosmism are discussed. This article shows that the philosophy of cosmism strives to build a bridge between scientific and religious representations of the world, laying the foundation of a creative planetary action. A comparison is made of cosmism ideas and transhumanism.

Since the mid-1980s «Russian cosmism» achieved unimpeded dissemination in Russia and attained enormous popularity. Defined as «a scientific and philosophical current within the Russian culture» and an essential part of the «Russian idea», the cosmism is based upon a holistic view of the universe which presupposes a teleologically determined evolution. Humanity appears destined to become a decisive factor in cosmic evolution – a cosmic self-consciousness, active agent and potential perfector. This highly speculative concept – couched in vague terminology and rather anachronistic in its anthropocentric belief in progress – is, however, far from being a unified «philosophical school» in the sense of an academic history. The main «representatives» of the «Russian cosmism», Nikolai Fiodorov, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and Vladimir Vernadsky did not consider themselves part of a common intellectual tradition and differ fundamentally in their worldviews. Both the term «cosmisme russe» as well as the concept – an hybrid ideological construction which combines para-science, occultism, New Age-ideology, and neo-bogostroitel'stvo – originated in the late Soviet period and have fed into a nationalist discourse about Russian identity in post-Soviet Russia. «Cosmisme russe» turns out to be a typical case «of invention of a tradition» (Eric Hobsbawm), whose purpose is also to support a tradition of invention.

« Cosmisme russe » et modernisme cosmiste. Quelques propositions

Our theses outline a program of research on the relationship between modernism and the Russian cosmism. We propose to see the first as a historiographic construction which is used to ensure a continuity of Russian culture beyond the ruptures in its history. The cosmism appears as a crystallization of the modernist context characterized by the collision of the new scientific representations with resurgent esoteric theories. «Global» and «trans-planetary» interpretations that appear at that time are seen and retrospectively grouped as characteristic features of the cosmism. Organicist and holist, feeding primarily from energetic and evolutionist paradigms, these interpretations sometimes appeal to the utopian tradition and mythology of the new man and the new humanity. The doctrine of Nikolaï Fedorov is at the center of this constellation of ideas. The ethico-anthropic principle which is characteristic of it declares man being an active factor in the universe and its anti-entropy. To conclude, we propose to look at the Russian cosmism in a close context (the German Naturphilosophie) and in an expanded one (francophone theories of evolution in the eighteenth-nineteenth, English futurology in the 19th-20th centuries).

This article examines the foundations the philosophical and religious vision of the world of the poet and visionary Russian Daniil Andreev (1906-1959) and his view of human destiny as it is exposed in his mystical treatise The Rose of the World. His fundamental insights are close to those of Russian cosmism, and more generally to those Russian religious thinkers who advocate an active Christianity (Solovyov, Fiodorov). Like them, he considers that God's creation remains unfinished. Andreev considers authentic religion to be a «project» where man actively participates in the building of a more perfect world. The man must be a «co-creator» to God, a view that is coherent with the idea that man was created in the image and likeness to God. This belief underlies the project of The Rose of the World, an era of Earth's future history characterized by the triumph of the fraternity and human creativity. It will emerge at the end of a gradual process that will witness an increasing subordination of matter to spirit, and an improvement of human nature.

The article discusses the presence and meaning of some major themes of Cosmist thought in the works of the Russian philosopher and philologist Jacob Golosovker (1890-1967). As the Cosmists, his philosophy is firmly rooted in the culture of Russian modernism. This proximity is explicit in such themes as «the death of heavens», the idea of the essential participation of man to the life of the cosmos, as well as the heroic ideal of the philosopher-artist destined to overcome the absurdity of existence through a tireless activity aimed that aims the creation of a common culture and the production of symbols and images that provide meaning to the presence of man in the universe. Despite this proximity, Golosovker nevertheless rejects all forms of technocratic optimism, as he does not believe (or even considers desirable) that the contradictions of man’s existence could be ultimately overcome in some distant future. His «Cosmist» themes are to be considered as a part of his global aim of restoring the value of mythopoetic though, of the «right to dream», which he considers to be endangered by modernity’s rationalism and instrumental approach to nature.

At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the question of a new man arises at individual and collective levels; it has social but also mystical-philosophical aspects. The proletarian poets, among others, try to answer to that question. Their social demands are inseparable from the development of a new man, and that's also what offers the cosmism. The rejection of private property and family, the cult of the machines, the idea that human capabilities can be indefinitely improved up to achieving immortality, the rejection of sexual life, contempt for nature, such are the similarities, at least for a moment, between these two streams. But the cosmist moment of the proletarian poets is short. In the early 1920s, some of them are already protesting against the side excessively abstract of this new way of romanticism, far from the realities.

The presence of Fedorov’s ideas in the Soviet Union has three reasons: some organised flows of ideas, such as bio-cosmism, defend similar conceptions to those exposed by Fedorov; some devoted followers of Fedorov actively promote his ideas; the economic difficulties of the USSR, and especially the persistence of starvation, remind Fedorov’s discussion of the matter. This presence calls into question the alleged religious nature of Fedorov's philosophy and also the alleged marxist character of the Soviet state.

The comparison between Soviet Marxists and religious doctrines is well known. Indeed, Marxism, in its dogmatic form, became «metaphysical», so to speak, and provided the template not just of the ultimate change of society but how to make humanity immortal and spread it all over the universe. This streak of Marxism, in its Soviet interpretation, fit well into Russia’s native philosophical tradition, Russian « cosmism ». A good example here could be the teaching of Nikolai Fedorov. The collapse of the USSR was a great catastrophe for many Russian intellectuals. It was not just the end of the century-old Slavophile dream integrated into Soviet discourse, and which ensured Russia’s goal in saving and leading humanity; the catastrophe had much deeper metaphysical implications: it was the end of the dream that humanity was different from other species and would not disappear in the future, as was the case with other species. The dream of personal immortality and resurrection of the dead, as was preached by Fedorov, was also to be forsaken. Still, for others, the dream of « Russian cosmism » is still alive, and they believe that these dreams would find an appropriate socio-political setting in the future.

In his version of the idea that Russia should properly be understood as a Eurasian, rather than European or Asian power, Nikolai Fedorov draws on and extends ideas from the nineteenth century Slavophile tradition of Russian thought, and foreshadows some of the positions later advanced by the émigré Eurasianist movement of the 1920s and 30s as well as by more recent post-soviet Neo-Eurasian thinkers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Discussion will focus on the idea of the Pamir mountains and the role of Constantinople in Fedorov’s thought, and the positive and negative reception of his ideas by the expatriot Eurasianists. Through his arguments for the centrality of Eurasia in human history, Fedorov defines Russia’s task to lead the project of the future unification of all humanity in the transformation of the cosmos.

This article is devoted to the notion of territory, landscape and ethnicity problems that are at the center of the writings of Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev (1914-1994). Son of two of the greatest poets of the twentieth century Russia (Nikolai Gumilev and Anna Akhmatova), Gumilev, who spent 13 years of his life in the Goulag, was a prominent intellectual figure of the last period of the Union Soviet. We will see in this study how Gumilev developed a theory of «scientific» etnos as part of landscape, based on natural and environmental principles. It will also look at how he applied them to specific political conclusions on the interethnic relations in the Soviet Union of his time - and anti-Semitic positions driven by his conception of the etnos as «green» niche. Towards the end of his life, Gumilev declared that everyone should recognize traditional boundaries – both spatial and temporal – which constitute its ethnic identity and have a clear idea of what separates his group of others. Salvation could only come from the «mozaicite» [mozaičnost’], or diversity, which naturally characterized ethnicity in any place and was «the optimal form of human existence» which enabled humanity to survive.

Philosopher and engineer, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky has long been presented by the Soviet power as one of the «fathers» of the conquest of space. Even today, his figure and quotations from his works are highlighted by a Russian power having at heart to put in the foreground the «renewal» of a certain idea of the technical-scientific power inherited from the Soviet Union. This article presents the different steps of this process of mobilization around the figure and the thought of K. Tsiolkovsky for the benefit of various political and geopolitical enterprises, from the end of the twentieth century up to our days.
