Joan of Arc is present in varying degrees of intensity in Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry. How did she make this medieval figure of Catholicism and symbol of French cultural identity her own, and transport it to Orthodox Russia during the revolutionary era? This article answers the question from three angles. The first part examines the construction of a heroic image for lyrical subjects depicted in the guise of the fighting saint, exploring the poet’s connection with history. The second part shows that Joan of Arc is associated with poetic genius and creative power. She appears in a pagan context and merges with the King Virgin in works inspired by Russian folklore. The third part examines the poet’s tragic fate in the light of the Johannine mission and her conception of the poetic calling.

This article questions the link between two poets who seem to have nothing in common. After studying their possible junction in the context of European symbolism, it hypothesizes an artistic convergence in the revolutionary poetic experience. Arthur Rimbaud and Alexandre Blok witnessed the revolution: the Paris Commune in 1871 and the October Revolution of 1917. The first was an anonymous spectator, the second an important actor. For one, the revolution was a signal of revolt, for the other a mystical revelation. Both considered it a sacred festival. The poem The Twelve («Dvenadcat») by Alexander Blok can be read in the light of Rimbaldian poetics. The structure and dynamics of the images leading to the final vision echo those of Arthur Rimbaud in A Season in Hell and The Illuminations. These are two crossings of modernity to the breaking point. Blok concluded the Rimbaldian experience in the accomplishment of his «brilliant disaster».

The poetry collection A Part of Speech by Joseph Brodsky was published in the United States in 1977. It is the height of his first life as a young poet. After a trial for social parasitism and a sentence to hard labor in 1964, he was finally expelled from the Soviet Union in 1972. Then he started a new poetic life becoming an American citizen. Delivered from a heavy political environment, he can follow the path of Pouchkine lyrical tradition and find a new link with the ruined culture of the poets of the Silver Age. His poems illustrate the principle of “lyrical exteriority”, establishing a link between emotional intensity and metaphysical detachment. Traduction en russe : Olga Cadars
