Alexander Radiščev, Russian man of letters, writer, and philosopher of the Enlightenment, became famous with his book Journey from Petersburg to Moscow (1790), in which he criticized autocracy and serfdom. He was keenly interested in the economic issues of his time and also wrote during his exile in Siberia in 1792 a work especially devoted to the Russian-Chinese trade in Kiakhta. Here, he highlights the opportunities and the drawbacks for Russia in developing trade with China, and the impact of such trade on the national economy and the way of life of the Siberian people. In this article Radiščev’s Letter on trade with China is thus analyzed as a valuable source for our understanding both of the specific context of the relations between two neighboring empires in the late eighteenth century and also of Radiščev’s own role as a precursor of economics in Russia. В 1790 г.

The essay deals with the educational, cultural, and religious activities of the Russian conservatives related to the remote “exotic” regions of the world. In my work I seek to demonstrate that the growing interest of Russian statesmen, ecclesiastics, and public figures to these areas was stimulated to a large extent by the new notion of the African and Asian peoples as the "little brothers" of Russian Empire who were in need of its tutelage and protection. This notion was based on the idea of the alleged spiritual affinity of these ethno-confessional groups to Russia which made them potentially ripe for conversion to Orthodoxy. The activities of prominent Russian conservatives are analyzed in connection with such events as the Russian expeditions to Abyssinia, the establishment of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society and the mission to the Nestorians of North Persia.

Created respectively at the end of 1906 (Revue du Monde musulman), in 1911 (The Moslem World) and in 1912 (Mir Islama), these three Islamologist journals were the organs of mighty Imperial powers. Observing the treatment reserved for Russia’s Muslims in these three reviews helps identify points of convergence and divergence. The three reviews differ in their tone, the political sympathies of some of their contributors and the personalities of their directors. Три исламоведческих журнала основанных соответственно в конце 1906 года (Revue du Monde musulman), в 1911 году (The Moslem World) и в 1912 году (Мир Ислама), являлись органами учреждений имперских держав управлявших мусульманскими народами (научные общества в случае французского и русского журналов; евангелическое миссионерское общество в случае The Moslem World).

A Circassian writer and Muslim journalist, Maghomet-Bek Hadjetlaché (aka Kazi-Bek Akhmetukov, aka G.Etinger, etc., ca. 1868/1870-1929) was born Jewish and baptized to Orthodoxy, but reinvented his identity as a Circassian and a Muslim. In that capacity he chose to become a State agent working against the Muslim opposition, and vice versa; hence his nickname of Muslim Azef. Presenting new evidence of his lifelong strategy of ‘playing the Other’ and taking the hero as a trickster crossing social, political and cultural borders by tricking the other(s), the author considers his choice of identities, strategies of deceit, and the reasons why actors from opposite sides of those borders (Muslims, State officials, etc.) either trusted or distrusted him. Against the background of recent discussions of Russian Orientalism’s specificities, the article examines Orientalism’s role in inventing those borders, the ‘mirrored’ meaning of the Oriental / Muslim belonging and otherness (conjoining the ideas of the romantic nation and race) in different cultural and political settings, as well as the intersection of a number of “Orientalisms” – ‘cultural distances’ of the Orientalist type, – which represented for Hadjetlaché both the space of identity choice and the place where he could make use of that invented identity as a kind of symbolic capital easily bought by each side involved.

The Crimea, the Transcaucasian region and Siberia all inspired Pushkin. These regions, perceived as «oriental» were also part of the imaginary landscape of Russian identity as it was constructed at the time. The poet’s discovery of the Orient is part both of the Eastern renaissance ongoing in Western Europe at the time, and of ancient Russia’s literary tradition, which included a number of descriptions of Eastern frontier regions. However, Pushkin never obtained permission to cross the Empire’s borders: his journeys shaped his attitude towards the Orient at the same time that they reflected the Empire’s Eastern frontier. He bequeathed to his readers a series of representations of different regions which still serve today as cultural references when one evokes Russia’s relationship to the East.

As Nabokov asserted in the preface to one of his novels, “the entire Orient” left him “supremely indifferent.” Aloof as he may have stayed from the modernist fascination with the Orient, his work suggests that the “east side of his consciousness” reached far into Asian territories. The present paper will focus on The Gift, his last novel in Russian, comprising a vivid account of a Central Asian expedition. Through the context of the author’s life and art, I aim to develop an interpretation of the ways in which the Orient is represented in the novel.

This article analyses the aesthetic function of the Orient in Vladimir Nabokov’s final Russian novel The Gift (1938). The Orient that Nabokov very authentically describes has a particular role in shaping the concepts of imagination and fiction. The play on the narrator’s status lets the author explore with polyphony the Orient. This article shows how the author’s aesthetic researches condense in this original theme.

This article is a morphosemantic analysis of the assimilation of Turkish, Persian, and Bulgar words in the French and Russian languages, of their own lexical meaning after their integration, as well as of their semantic and structural interculturalism in languages with different structures: the Turkish and the Persian languages, the French and the Russian languages.

This paper analyzes how the image of Tashkent, the capital of Russian colonial Turkestan, was built at political, visual and literary levels during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From the viewpoint of “exoticizing” / “orientalizing” practices, the figure of Tashkent as an urban structure is far from unambiguous. Since the city was transformed as the administrative center of Russian colonial Turkestan, two opposing logics (of keeping at a distance and of assimilation) were intertwined during the process of (non-)exoticization of Tashkent, revealing the complexity of the “orientalization” and the “europeanization” of the city. The (omnipresent but not explicit) idea of segregation is reflected in an ambiguous and biased representation of Tashkent, whose descriptions of the traditional quarters (of the old native city) share the picturesque and exotic images inspired by Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, while the colonial part of the city (the new Russian town) can be compared to St. Petersburg. The choice of Tashkent is interesting because of its versatility, which shows how the argument on exoticization is ambiguous, as the subject assimilates the object and, at different levels and speeds, builds the figure of an “exotic Other”, first outside, then within the endorsed space.

Oriental topics were recurrent in Soviet cinema journals published in the 1920’s: Soviet films as well as many films produced abroad (as American or French films, for example) used oriental topics and were released in the Soviet Union. The prevalence of oriental cinema reflected both the wish of ethnographers to develop scientific films about the Orient, and the call on filmmakers from the head of the propaganda department of the Communist Party to take into consideration eastern peoples as an essential part of the Soviet audience. Most important of all, the Orient became a major aspect of Soviet cinema with the creation of the film company Vostokkino [literally “The Oriental Cinema”]. Founded in 1928 and liquidated in 1935, Vostokkino produced more than one hundred films (both fiction and non-fiction). The aim of this paper is to complete Soviet Cinema History, describing the success of oriental films for Soviet audiences and relating the creation of Vostokkino This analysis is part of an important study about the “Soviet East”, which examines interethnic relationships at the time.

This article will explore the portrayal of the Sino-Russian border in the mass culture of the Soviet Union, through the examination of a body of songs dating from 1935 to 1976. An analysis of the different historical periods will help us explore the process of cultural peripheralization, by which the center tends to impose on its periphery, through its control of cultural production, a certain interpretation of its foreign contacts. We will see how the specific representations of the eastern border tended to reflect the geopolitical interests of Moscow towards its periphery and the Asia-Pacific region. This will lead us to consider how the emergence of a post-Soviet cultural production in the Russian Far East has tended to reflect the profound paradigm shift in its relations with Asia since 1991.

As a consequence of their defeat in the Civil War (1947-1949) 100,000 Greek communists were forced to flee their native country and take up residence in the Soviet Union. Today they form a strong Russian speaking community in Greece, united by a common experience and certain nostalgia for Soviet life. These ties are maintained through numerous cultural and social associations, especially in Athens and Salonika, as well as by a number of periodical publications. Through their press, they convey a positive image of Russia today, relying on international friendship and Russian nationalism. While these publications tend to dismiss communist ideology, they reject at the same time all kinds of liberalism, promoting an ideology inspired by the writing of I.A. Il’in and I.L. Solonevitch. My article focuses on this emerging image of Russia as it is exemplified in the contemporary Greek press published in Russian. А. Л.
