The representations of Japan elaborated in pre-modern Russia, before the opening of direct diplomatic and commercial relations between the two countries, betray three characteristics: 1. for obvious historical reasons, they appear later than the images of Persia, India and China; 2. until the middle of the 18th century, they consist of patchworks whose material is largely borrowed from older western cosmographies; 3. Toward the end of the 18th century, a huge gap appears between a current of «objective» description of Japanese culture and a new brand of mystic and utopist mythology which associates Japan with the legendary Belovod'e. After a general overview of the different cosmographies, we focus our attention on the Topozerskij manuscript (Putešestvennik) of which we offer a translation and a commentary.

As in the West, the study of Japan, and in particular of the Japanese language, started in Russia later than the studies of other Eastern countries. For, during the closing of Japan, little information was known about this country. Its study started only during the second half of the 19th century after the opening of Japan. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Japanese studies in Russia highly relied on western models and were of a modest theoretical level. One of the reasons of the Russian defeat in 1905 is the lack of knowledge about Japan. Around 1910, a group of young and talented scholars was formed under the influence of this defeat. Among them, E. D. Polivanov, N. I. Konrad, N. A. Nevski, O. O. Rosenberg, etc. Some of them emigrated after the October revolution and played a fundamental role in the Japanese studies in other countries, like M. N. Ramming in Germany or Serge Eliseev in France and in the United States.

For the Russian school of orientalism, 1905 defeat against Japan had been a triple failure: a failure in Japanese linguistic studies, a failure to spread knowledge out of the sanctuary of the University and a failure for humanists. Although there had been lectures in Saint Petersburg since 1870 and in Vladivostok since 1899, Japanese studies remained marginal for sure. Misunderstanding of Japan was neither the unique nor the main cause of Russian defeat, but it was one of them. To avoid a new war, to support Eastern Russian interests, enthusiastic scholars committed themselves in Japanese studies. They did it with talent and pragmatism. Orientalists such as Dmitri Pozdneev were polyvalent: they had to be linguists, historians, specialists in political studies, economists. Why such a renewal? These men also wanted to overcome hatred, and to determine common interests between the two countries. In a context of contestation of the autocratic power in Russia, they also dreamt of a new development model, which could have been a Japanese model.

Futabatei Shimei (1964-1909) played a fundamental role in the development of Japanese literature through his translations of Russian works, in particular those of Ivan Turgenev. This article sheds light on several little-known biographical elements which are related to the writer’s stay in Saint Petersburg in 1908 and 1909.

The present paper deals with the image of Japan in Russian Symbolist literature. This image existed simultaneously with the myth of “the geisha country” as well as the myth of “the yellow peril”. It was born after the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895 and finally took shape after the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. The image of “the geisha country” gave rise to a Russian version of European ‘Japonism’ in literature and visual and plastic arts. The image of “the yellow peril” became an important part of the Weltanschauung and creative work of the main actors of the Russian ‘Silver Age’ like Vladimir Solovyev, Valery Bryusov and Andrey Bely. European and Russian politicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries took little interest in Japan and underestimated this country as a potential world power with imperialistic ambitions. Japan was seen as a little and remote exotic country. Thinkers, poets and artists were more attentive and more sagacious than diplomats and politicians. They were the first to respect and to understand Japan, to estimate her potential in the field of world politics and not only in culture and the arts. Neither in Europe nor in the USA the image of Japan as “the yellow peril” was a part of “highbrow” culture, remaining in the domain of the gutter press. In Russia this image directly influenced principal artists of the time.

“Japonisme” as an artistic movement became widespread in Russia since the end of the year 1880, that is, the beginning of modernism. The peculiarity of the Russian Japonisme lies primarily in the fact that it came to Russia not directly from the Far East, but with Western European modernism. The latter stimulated the Russian artists’ interest in not only foreign, but also indigenous Eastern art forms, that is, Russian primitive arts, which helped the Russian artists to develop their individual style of primitivism. This article examines the problems faced during the transition from symbolism to primitivism in Russian art and focuses on the relationship between Japonisme and post-impressionism, which significantly influenced Russian artists at that time. In 1912, Pavel Kuznetsov painted “Still Life with Japanese prints,” which shows the direct influence of Gauguin’s work with the same name and also exemplifies the influence of Japonisme. Certain works of Russian neoprimitivists show a form of Japonisme similar to that in the works of the French group “Les Nabis.” On the basis of synthetism evolved by Gauguin and the “Nabis”, who were strongly influenced by Japanese art, Kuznetsov and the Russian neoprimitivists introduced into their art the principles of fauvism, cubism, and Russian primitive arts and managed to create a peculiarly Russian version of synthetism.

This essay explores the image of Japan in Khlebnikov’s work and, in doing so, seeks to locate the island nation within the futurist poet’s bigger vision of Eurasia. Interest in Japan marks both the beginning of Khlebnikov’s turn to Asia and his last words on the issue of east and west, from poems on the Russo-Japanese War dating from 1910 to one of his last works, the poem “Perevorot v Vladivostoke” (1922). I argue that although initially Khlebnikov’s image of Japan fits into his general positive view of the east, its significance in the futurist’s Eurasianism becomes increasingly problematic. At issue is the shifting place of Japan in Khlebnikov’s universalist vision: the futurist’s desire to create an utopia free from the fetters of the west comes to stand in increasing tension with Japan’s growing status as a westernized imperial power and its occupation of the Russian Far East during the Civil War. This tension is particularly underscored when we juxtapose “Perevorot v Vladivostoke” with fellow futurist Nikolai Aseev’s eye-witness accounts of the Japanese in Siberia, accounts which are striking for the attention paid to the Koreans in Vladivostok who were resisting Japanese colonial rule of Korea.

The Japanese theatre gave rise to a craze in Russia as well as in other European countries at the end of 19th century. Nevertheless, it was only in 1928, during the noteworthy kabuki tour in Moscow and Leningrad, that, for the first time, it was possible to see a genuine performance of Japanese theatre on an European stage. The present article, which relies mainly on archives and publications in Japanese and Russian Soviet Embasy in Tokyo and the Shōchiku, the leading production company for theater in Japan. The tour of Ichikawa Sadanji II’s company had indeed an important cultural impact in USSR but one should not forget that this event was possible only thanks to diplomatic reasons. This article considers also the various obstacles to the tour, from the violent reactions of Japanese extreme right-wing movements to its astronimical cost. The expenses were moreover entirely borne by the Soviet part which was convinced that the kabuki would flop (which it was not). This article also looks at the way the Soviet audience was prepared to receive kabuki and at Soviet orientalists’ contribution to it. Then, the authors examine the notion of exoticism in Soviet Union and try to understand how the kabuki, a theatre known to be conservative and to subscribe to feudal values, was ideologically «forgiven» in Soviet Union at the eve of the First five-year plan.

Boris Pilnyak’s article about Japanese theatre, which remained unpublished for a long time and is here translated into French, presents a close look at his experience as a Soviet man attending nō, kabuki and shingeki (new theatre) during his two stays in Japan in 1926 and 1932. Pilnyak was a privileged member of the audience in Japan because of the playwriters, stage directors and actors he could meet there. Pilnyak’s article is moreover of special interest as an account written by a Soviet writer who was also known to be a theatre lover and a close friend of several major actors and stage directors in Moscow.

K. M. Simonov (1915-1979) visited Japan for the first time in 1946 as a member of a group of Soviet correspondents. They traveled through the country demolished by the war from the northern island Hokkaido to southern Kyushu. The Japanese culture and its esthetics had a profound impact on Simonov’s heart and memory. Twenty years passed and in 1967 the writer actually repeated the same itinerary together with his wife L. A. Zhadova (1927-1981). In his Japanese diaries of 1946 and travelling notes of 1967, an important place is devoted to Japanese theatre, both traditional and modern. In 1967 he had seen only one performance, Misteria-buff by V. Mayakovsky staged by Tokyo’s theatrical troupe Engeki Ansanburu. Simonov met the producer of the performance the well-known Japanese director and actor Senda Korenari (1904-1994) who appeared to be familiar to him from the distant 1946. The majority of the fragments from diaries of 1946 and notes of 1967 included here are published for the first time. К.М.

This article is the abstract of a Ph.D. dissertation which was defended in March 2010 and devoted to the Japanese playwright and stage-director Osanai Kaoru. Because he wanted to give the supremacy to the text over the acting, Osanai broke away the Japanese theatrical world which was dominated by tradition, in particular by kabuki. His eight-month stay in Europe in 1912 and 1913 marked a turning point in his career and allowed him to discover Konstantin Stanislavski’s directions which for a while he scrupulously imitated. Two other Japanese stage directors, Suzuki Tadashi and Miyagi Satoshi, are also referred to.

The present article investigates the history of the Japanese presence in Siberia since the establishment of Russian-Japanese relations in the 18th century up to the near complete collapse of bilateral relations on the eve of World War II. In this article the author focuses on the current geographical borders of Siberia and excludes the Russian Far East. He bases his study on previous scientific material on the history of the Japanese in Siberia, and also uses new historical documents found by him in the regional archives of Russia. The article deals with political issues, economic and trade cooperation, cooperation in science, culture, and education. It considers the history of Japanese presence in Siberia in the framework of regional problems in international relations.

The problem of Japanese World War II POWs has generated political and humanitarian contradictions in Russian-Japanese relations. After the end of the war, more than 500 000 Japanese soldiers and officers from Manchuria, Northern Korea, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands were sent to the Soviet Union. All of these men naturally looked forward to returning home quickly, and their kin anxiously awaited them. For many, however, repa¬triation would take years rather than months, and tens of thousands were des¬tined to die without seeing their homeland again. The prolonged nature of the repatriation process, together with Soviet unwillingness to provide accurate information about the number and identity of their prisoners, greatly exacerbated this animosity. At the same time, internment in the USSR has generated numerous memoirs by Japanese POWs. The information on Japanese POWs' perception of the Siberian camps, and, through that prism, of Siberia, Russia and Russian people, is contained in a variety of sources (memoirs, letters, oral memoirs, art, etc). It allows the reconstruction of details of the life of Soviet society in the 1940s. Moreover, the perception of Soviet reality, the Soviet régime, the Soviet people, by the POWs became an important factor in forming public opinion concerning Russia in post-war Japan.
